84% Welcome to the Danvers Family / Chapter 84: 84. The Awakening

Capítulo 84: 84. The Awakening

October 18, 2017 (pregnancy week 32)

Kara woke up in her bed and stretched her limbs out languidly.  The sun shone high in the sky, waking her pleasantly.  She must have been really tired because she never took a nap in the middle of the day.  She didn’t even remember laying down.  She took a second to take stock of herself.  She felt OK.  Good, even.  She wrapped her sweater around her and climbed out of bed.  She was just about to go downstairs when she heard a knock on the bedroom door.  “Come in,” she called, figuring it was one of the kids.

The door opened, and instead of one of the twins, Brainy let himself in, closing the door behind him.

“Brainy?  What’s up, buddy?” she asked.  “Is everything OK?”

“Well, that’s what I’m here to find out,” Brainy replied, walking around the room and looking at things.

“Did Alex send you?” Kara wondered.

“Yes, yes.  To make sure that your neural pathways are clear and intact,” he said, picking up a vase of flowers and examining them.  “Your brain is in truly remarkable health for someone languishing in a coma.”

Kara frowned.  “Uh, I'm sorry, did you say ‘coma?’”

“Mmm, did I bury the lede?” Brainy asked.  “You've been in a coma for two days.”

“I'm in my bedroom,” Kara pointed out.

“Wow.  Oh!  You mean the physical manifestation of the place in which your subconscious feels most comfortable?  That bedroom?” Brainy asked.

“If I'm in a coma, how are you here?” Kara inquired, following him around the room as he looked at everything.

“Rokk asked me to communicate with you on behalf of him and your family and your DEO compatriots.  31st century technology,” he replied.  “It's also what's keeping you alive.”

Kara paused.  “Alive?”

“Reign defeated you,” Brainy said, turning to look at her.  “Don't you remember?”

Kara’s brain lit up with memories of the fight with Reign.  “No, this is crazy.  This...  Reign is still out there.  Pe-  People are dying, I have to wake up.”  Kara ran to the bedroom door and tried to open it, but it was stuck.

“I don't think you're listening to me,” Brainy said.

“What?” Kara grunted as she strained to pull the door open.

“Can we just, maybe, relax a little bit?” Brainy suggested.

Kara pulled on the door some more.  “Damn it!  It won't open!” She felt herself starting to panic for a moment and leaned against the door panting.

XXX

“Well, the good news is her mind is active and alert,” Brainy informed the rather large group around him.

“Oh, thank God,” Alex sighed with relief.

“Yes,” Brainy nodded.  “The bad news is, she is very angry.”

“Well, I'm sure she loves being trapped inside a mind prison,” Maggie quipped.

“You're speaking with her right now, even as you're speaking with us?” J’onn checked.

Brainy pointed to the little device attached to Kara’s head in the pod.  “The crown connects to my internal Al core.  It translates her brainwaves to English and sends electronic signals back to her.”

“These tanks have incredible healing power, so she just needs to rest and let it do its work,” Imra offered.

“You're from the future,” Alex said.  “Did you know this was gonna happen?”

“No, but she's through the worst of it, she'll live,” Rokk assured.

“But when will she wake up?” Jamie whimpered.

“We don't know, kiddo, I’m sorry,” Rokk said grimly, placing his hand on her shoulder.

“Well, Reign is still out there,” J’onn mused.  “I don't like our odds without Supergirl by our side.”

“I mean, Reign's been quiet, maybe she got injured, too?” Lena said hopefully.

Alex nodded.  “Let's hope so.  It's only a matter of time before she strikes again.”

Ruby ran through the house, trying to hide from her mother who was after her.  She had her weapon ready, and she stayed quiet as she heard footsteps coming down the stairs.  As soon as her mother was in sight, Ruby grinned and fired her toy gun at her.

Sam screeched and fired her weapon back, backing into a table and sending everything crashing to the floor.  “Oh, crap!” she hollered, laughing uncontrollably.  “Ah!  Okay, stop.  Hold on!  Pause game!” she cried out, as Ruby continued to pelt her with little toy projectiles.  She knelt down on the floor and started clearing away the broken glass.

“And you thought I was gonna break something!” Ruby giggled.

“Ah, jeez,” Sam lamented as she picked up a broken picture of her and Ruby together.

Outside a car honked urgently.  “That's Clara,” Ruby announced.

“Ah, already? Sam pouted.

“The movie's in half an hour,” Ruby pointed out.

“Okay,” Sam sighed.  “Well, you're making me dinner tonight, right?  It's your turn.”

“Any dietary restrictions I should know about?” Ruby asked playfully.

Sam pretended to think for a moment.  “I'm allergic to bad food.”

“Okay.  Well, save up for dinner.  Don't eat too much.”

Sam’s attention was overtaken by the front page of the newspaper.

“Mom?” Ruby said, trying to get her attention.  “She’ll be OK, Mom.  Jessie says she’s getting better every day.  Love you.”  The preteen took off for her movie, leaving Sam staring at the newspaper.

“You have done well, my child,” the Kryptonian priestess said to Reign.  “You easily vanquished the daughter of the House of El.  You left your mark on this city.  But there is much yet to be accomplished.”

“What would you have me do?” Reign asked.

“This world needs to be cleansed,” the priestess said.  “Not just of sinners but those who harbor them. It is time to deliver the awakening.”

“How?”

“Those who would do evil operate in broad daylight without shame.  For the righteous have cast their eyes to the ground.  Force their gaze back to the light.  Show them what justice really is.”

“Lena!” James called out as she entered his office at Catco.  He stood up and met her at the couches, opening his arms and letting her fall into them.  “How is she?” he asked softly.

“Good, I think,” Lena replied.  “Brainy says she’ll be ready to wake up in a few hours, so I wanted to come in and get a few things done before I go back.  I just hate standing around not doing anything.  It really gets to me.”

“I understand,” he said, patting her arm.

“And it’s so hard to see her so beaten up,” Lena added, looking broken.

“I know,” he said, hugging her again.

She gently pushed him away after a second.  “Sorry, I just don’t want to cry here.”

“It’s OK, Lena.  Lucy and I have done our fair share of crying ourselves,” James admitted.

“Lucy can cry?” Lena deadpanned.

James chuckled.  “Yes, she can.  Don’t let her fool you.”

Lena gave him a half-smile.  It was all she could muster at the moment.

The sound of a window being broken and people screaming filtered through to James’ office, and James and Lena hurried out to see what was happening.  In the middle of the floor, there was a man laying haphazardly at Reign’s feet.

“Why have you come here?” Lena demanded.

“To deliver a message,” Reign replied.

“We are not your messengers,” Lena challenged.

Reign laughed.  “Yes, you are.”  She pointed at a man near her.  “You!  Turn your camera on me.”

The man fearfully obeyed, picking up his camera and turning it on.

Reign looked down at the man at her feet as if he were something detestable on her shoe.  “This man was a thief, condemned by his own actions.  You've allowed sin to take root and fester like a weed.  And worst of all, you have looked away.  Apathy is the greatest sin of all.  From now on it will be punished in kind.  There will be no more mercy.  There will only be justice.  I'm here to help.”  With that, the rogue Kryptonian took off as fast as she’d arrived.

Lena shared a look with James before calling an ambulance for the so-called thief that Reign had just dropped at their feet.  Unfortunately, the emergency responders claimed that the man was already dead, and there was nothing they could do except take the body away.  Lena’s stomach roiled at the implications that Reign was about to go on an all-out killing spree while Supergirl still languished in a coma.  She got the video of Reign to the DEO as fast as she could.

“I'm here to help.”

“She's declaring war on criminality in National City,” J’onn observed from Reign’s video.

“Not just against the criminals, it's against the entire justice system,” Alex pointed out.

“We have to stop her,” Maggie worried.

“Without Supergirl?” J’onn questioned.

“I mean, we have a literal legion of superheroes here,” Maggie reminded him.

“And I hope you know that we would do anything we could for you,” Rokk agreed.  “But we have to be really careful.  If we die now we will endanger the future.”

“Well, we have Winn’s shields,” Alex said.  “So that should help, right?”

“Right.  And I can tell you what we do know,” Rokk offered.  “We know that Supergirl lives.  And we know that eventually Reign will leave.”

Alex scoffed.  “So that's... That's all you can give?  That's all you got?”

“We really don't know much at all because of the destruction so much of Earth's history,” Liin explained.

“And, unfortunately, even if we know the end result, we don't necessarily know how it happens,” Garth added.

“So we know that Supergirl lives,” Alex summed up, “And we know that Reign leaves… eventually.  But before she does, she could slaughter thousands.”

“Yeah, so what do we do now?” Maggie wanted to know.

“The Sundown Protocol,” J’onn replied.  “A highly-classified contingency plan to take down Superman if ever he turns against us.  Red sun grenades, sound bombs, Kryptonite darts, everything we'd need to take down a rogue Kryptonian on the loose.”

“Sorry, we don't have any more Kryptonite,” Alex reminded him.  “Clark got rid of it all, and got rid of it for a reason, and a reason that Kara agreed to.”

“That was before Reign,” J’onn countered.  “We still have the Kryptonite from Coville's probe, right?”

Maggie exhaled sharply.

“Prep whatever you have to,” Alex said.  “But before you use it, there's someone I have to talk to.”

XXXXXXXXXX

Alex drove to Albatross Bay Correctional Facility to see Coville.  When she arrived in the visitation room, she was surprised to see Coville injured.  “Ooh!  Your eye!” she feigned concern.  “What happened to you?”

“Oh,” Coville smiled.  “I was spreading the truth to my fellow inmates.  They would have preferred I lied.”

“Do you want to spread a little truth to me?” Alex offered.  “I'll pass it along to Supergirl.  You're her biggest fan, right?  She said that you knew about the reign of the beast.  What else do you know that can help us beat her?”

“Beat her?” Coville scoffed.  “She's already won.”

“No,” Alex said firmly.  “Supergirl's still alive.”

“She was supposed to rise, find her faith, and deliver it,” Coville explained.  “But Supergirl refused her faith and she failed the test.”

“Supergirl will defeat her,” Alex insisted.  “You just have to help us stop her.”

Coville shook his head.  “Supergirl lost so that Reign can prepare us for what comes next.”

Alex leaned closer to him.  “Never.  Underestimate.  Supergirl.”

“Hey,” James greeted Lena.  “Just put out a press release telling the city that CatCo is no longer under siege and urging the public to stay calm.”

“Calm?” Lena scoffed.  “The streets are desolate.  People are barricading themselves in their homes.  The city is terrified.”

“Yeah, but there are people out there working to rectify the situation.  OK?  Don't worry,” James tried soothing her.  “Come on and sit down with me.”  They sat on the couch, and James put his arms around her.  “Everything’s going to be OK.  You said it yourself, Kara is going to wake up in a few hours.  Just try to breathe.  I know it’s hard, but things are going to work out.  I know it.  Kara’s too strong to let this get her down.”

Lena’s lip trembled, and she tried to hold in her tears, but they fell down her cheeks anyways.  “I just want to hold her and tell her how much I love her,” she whimpered.

“And you will,” James encouraged.  “You will.  Tonight, in fact.  Just hang in there.”

“Lena?” Lucy spoke from behind her.

Lena braced herself for being yelled at for being in James’ arms.

“What’s wrong, honey?”  Lucy hurried to sit on the other side of the CEO and wrapped her arms around her too.  “Is this about Kara?”

Lena sighed in relief.  “Yeah,” she acknowledged.  “Sorry, I’m not trying to steal your husband or anything.”

Lucy chuckled.  “You’d better not.  I don’t want to have to fight a pregnant woman.”

That got a soft laugh out of Lena.  “You wouldn’t stand a chance against me, pregnant or not.”

“There’s our girl,” Lucy grinned.  “When you get back in shape, I’ll take that challenge.”

Lena smirked.  “You’re on.”

“Why don’t you come to lunch with us?” Lucy offered.

“I don’t want to infringe on your time together,” Lena demurred.

“Hey, you’re important to us too,” James pointed out.  “We love you, Lena.”

“Yeah,” Lucy agreed.  “Come on, we can go get sushi.  I know that’s your favorite.”

Lena nodded.  “OK.  Thanks, you guys.”

“Anytime,” James and Lucy said in unison.  They both gave her another squeeze of encouragement before they got up to leave.

“This is torture!” Kara groaned loudly, plopping onto her bed and putting a pillow over her face.

Brainy frowned.  “Out of all the 4,237,642 versions of our interactions that I envisioned, you calling it ‘torture’ wasn't one of them.”

Kara sighed heavily and watched Brainy as he further examined the room.  “What are you doing?” she asked.

“Checking for brain damage,” he explained.  “In simulacra, like the one we're in now, brain damage could present itself in any number of ways.  Mildew, mold.  Rats indicate neurological issues.  It's just to prepare you for reality re-entry.”

“Reality re-entry?” Kara repeated.

“If you're not properly prepared when we wake you up, you could go into shock.  Some people die immediately,” he warned her.

“Yeah…” Kara huffed nervously.  “Wait, though.  Does... Does that mean I'm ready to wake up?”

“Did I bury the lede again?”

Kara laughed triumphantly.  “Yes!  Okay, do I need to do anything?”

“Well, your room is the manifestation of your subconscious.  And that door seems to be the only way in or out.  My assumption?  Walk through it.”

Kara took hold of the doorknob.

XXX

“It's starting to drain,” Brainy told the gang.  “She's ready.”

XXX

Kara tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge.  She tried a little harder to no avail.

XXX

“Kara?” Alex called out to her.  “It's me.”

“She… should be… fine,” Brainy said hesitantly.

They all watched as the pod drained and Kara stayed asleep.

XXX

Kara groaned in frustration.  “It's not opening.”

Brainy tried the door himself to no avail.  “You... should be... fine.”

XXX

“Why isn't she waking up?” Jessie whimpered.

Brainy shook his head, at a loss for words.

XXX

Kara kept trying the door.  “Why won't this open?” she growled.

“Your body is fine,” Brainy told her as she continued to struggle with the door.  “We drained the tank, you suffered no ill-effects from the hibernation.”

“Then why am I still stuck in my brain?” Kara huffed.

“There's nothing wrong with your brain.  We've ruled that out,” Brainy said.

“Well, you're the 12th-level intellect.  Why don't you figure it out?” she grumbled.

Brainy took a drink of water from a glass on the table.  “Well, that rules out the physical…  So, barring another explanation, I would have to say the only thing keeping you here is you.”

Kara scoffed.  “Well, that doesn't make any sense cause I'm the one that wants to get out of here.”  She tried the door again with no luck.  “Then why won't this thing open?  It opened earlier.”

“To let me in.” Brainy pointed out, as she tried unsuccessfully punching the door.  “Going out... Different story.  Is there some reason your subconscious might be... Preventing your escape?  Self-preservation, perhaps?”

“I'm not afraid,” Kara insisted.  She punched the door again, but it just bounced her fist right back.

“You were badly beaten,” Brainy said matter-of-factly.

Kara tried using her heat vision on the door.

“Fear is a logical response to that stimulus,” Brainy continued.

“I am not afraid!”  She gathered her strength and tried with all her might to blast through the door with her heat vision.  She screamed in anger as she continued to fire at the door.  The whole room exploded in her rage, but the damned door still stayed closed.

XXX

The gang pulled Kara out of the pod and took her to the med bay.

“Come on, Kara, snap out of it,” Lena begged.

“Brainy will figure it out,” Reep assured.

“Don't over promise,” Brainy shook his head.  “I've never seen anything like this before.”  He looked at the Danvers’ distraught faces.  “I'm sorry.  Insensitive.”

“What happens if she stays like this?” Maggie worried.

Brainy sighed.  “The longer she remains unconscious, the more likely it is that it will become permanent.”

An alarm blared on the ship.

“Reign's attacking again,” Rokk announced.

“I'm getting us a feed,” Brainy said, tuning on the computer monitors.  “She attacked a meth lab…  The cops arrived…  She attacked them, too…  I'll run another scan on Kara.”

Alex got on her comms, “J'onn, where are you on Sundown?”

“Sound guns are almost done,” J’onn replied.  “But the grenades will take an hour, at least.  And we still don't know where Reign is gonna strike next.”

“I think I know how to get ahead of her,” Alex informed him.

XXX

When Alex was finished talking to J’onn, she returned to Kara’s side with the rest of her family.  The kids wormed their way under her arms, and she squeezed them tightly.  “It’s gonna be OK, girls,” she soothed them.  “Mama’s gonna wake up soon, I know it.”

“What if she doesn’t?” Jamie worried, tears in her eyes.

“She will,” Alex said firmly.  “She won’t leave us.  She wouldn’t.”

“She’s strong,” Maggie added.  “She’ll wake up.”

“Please, wake up, Kara,” Lena whispered, kissing the blonde on the forehead.  “We love you so much.”

Eliza tucked Lena and Maggie under her arms and rubbed their shoulders soothingly.  “Just hang in there, girls.  The Legionnaires said that Supergirl lives, OK?  She’ll wake up.”

“Girls,” Alex caught her daughters’ attention.  “I want you to promise me that you won’t go out there to fight Reign, no matter what happens.”

“But if we have our shields, she can’t touch us!” Jessie countered.

“Please, I am begging you.  Don’t do it.”

The girls shared a worried look between them.  Something in Alex’s face scared them.  “OK, Mom,” they agreed.  “We’ll let The Legion take care of it.  That’s why they came here in the first place.”

Alex blinked.  “Really?”

The twins nodded.  “Yeah.”

Alex sighed in relief and hugged them tightly.  “Thank you.”

“Are you going with J’onn to get Reign?” Jamie asked nervously.

“No, baby, he won’t let me,” Alex informed them.

Jamie nodded.  “Good.  I want you to stay here too.”

Alex nodded back.  She didn’t plan on letting go of her daughters anytime soon.  They all wanted to be with Kara, especially now.  They didn’t want to miss Kara waking up.  J’onn had had a couple of agents bring them up some chairs, so the moms-to-be didn’t have to stand the whole time.  The seven of them sat on either side of the medical bed where Kara laid while The Legion helped J’onn with the Sundown Protocol.

XXXXXXXXXXXX

“No Supergirl, and Reign is strong, but she doesn't know what we're capable of.  Let's show her,” J’onn encouraged the gang.

“You ready?” Lucy asked, throwing him a gun.

“Of course,” he replied.

“Let’s do this!” Reep replied excitedly.

Liin clapped him on the shoulder.  “Let’s go.”

The Legionnaires and a handful of DEO agents, including J’onn and Lucy, piled into a couple of SWAT-type vans.  They drove to the biggest bank in downtown, pulled masks over their faces, and hurried inside.

“Get on the ground!” J’onn shouted, waving a machine gun around.  “Get on the ground!” He shouted as he shot his gun into the air.  “Don't look at me!  Get on the ground!”  He climbed up on the counter and shot out the cameras.  “This is a robbery!  Don't look at me!  Don't touch that button!  Nobody move!  Hurry up!”

The rest of the team followed suit, shooting their guns into the air and causing a huge commotion.

Reign flew in through the window.  “You were warned,” she threatened.

J’onn and Lucy took their masks off and smirked, then Lucy threw a red sun grenade at the rogue Kryptonian, saying, “Catch.”  The grenade exploded before it even got to Reign, sending the woman flying back and hitting the ground with a groan.

“Light her up!” J’onn commanded, while the Kryptonian was down.  The DEO agents pulled out several sonic guns and pointed them all at her.  The weapons pulsed as they fired, and Reign struggled to get her footing.  “Now!” J’onn ordered, and Rokk and Liin jumped down with a rope to bind Reign to the ground.  The Kryptonian panted, and Lucy walked casually up to her and put a heavy chain around her neck that contained the Kryptonite sample from Coville’s probe.

Reign just looked angry.  She threw the guys off of her, and used the rope they’d had to lash out at Lucy.  The sheer force of the thick rope combined with the Kryptonian’s strength snapped Lucy’s leg, and the agent let out a scream of pain, falling to the ground and clutching her calf.

Reign shrugged off the Kryptonite and started to grab a hold of Lucy, but J’onn stopped her by grabbing her arm and punching her in the face.  The blow didn’t seem to hurt the woman, but she looked around at all the faces surrounding her and decided this trap wasn’t worth it, flying back out through the window and disappearing before anyone could go after her.  The Legion might be able to fly, but none of them had super speed, not even Jack.

XXXXXXXXXXXX

After the fight was over, Jack carried Lucy up to the ship where Brainy wanted to splint her leg.

“Are you okay?” Alex exclaimed, running to her best friend.

“Considering my tibia's been snapped in half?” Lucy grimaced.

Alex put her hand supportively on Lucy’s shoulder as Brainy worked on her leg. “What about Reign?” she asked.

Lucy shook her head.  “She shrugged off that Kryptonite like it was nothing.”  When Brainy clicked the splint into place, she cried out, “Argh!  Yes, thanks.  That's good.”

“The same amount incapacitated Kara,” Alex complained.  “So why was Reign resistant?”

“Maybe she's more than just Kryptonian,” J’onn suggested.

“No, the soil did hurt her,” Lucy replied.  “Just not enough.”

Seeing the gears in Alex’s head working, he asked her, “You have a plan?”

“Concentrate it,” Alex said.  “We'll put it straight in her bloodstream.  Jugular should work.”

“Ah. One... One small hiccup,” Winn interjected.  “Uh, who would be strong enough to hit her with the syringe?”

Alex thought for another minute.  “I’m calling Mon-El.”

XXXXXXXXXXXX

“Why are you cleaning?” Brainy asked Kara.  “None of this is real.”

“I don't know,” she shrugged.  “I guess I just like putting things back in order.  And my brain originally is like an empty little attic, and you must stock it with such furniture as you choose.  Sherlock Holmes.”  Kara pursed her lips thoughtfully.  “This is the furniture I chose...”

“Hmm.  Oversimplification,” Brainy replied, then at Kara’s stern look, he conceded.  “But, yes, go on.”

“So there must be something in here my subconscious wants me to see,” she pointed out.

“Hmm.  That's... That's actually not a bad idea.  Why didn't I think of that?”

Kara walked over to a few photos that had broken on the floor and picked one up.  It was a photo of her at twelve-years-old with a big black cat.  “Huh.”

“You had a pet?” Brainy asked.

“Yeah,” Kara sighed.  “But if this is my subconscious trying to tell myself something, I don't get it.”

“Could be a random neuron firing,” Brainy surmised.  “What's its name?”

“Streaky,” Kara smiled.  “I, uh... I found him on our street right after I came to Earth, actually.  He was a stray, too.”

“You felt an emotional kinship,” said Brainy.

“Yes,” Kara giggled.  “Yeah.  We were friends.”  As Kara spoke, the cat magically appeared on the bed.  “I used to go out every night and feed him,” she said, walking over and petting the cat.  “I didn't wanna touch him.  I was so strong, I could have hurt him.  So, I practiced being gentle.  And then, one day, I pet him.”  She scooped the cat up and held him in her arms.  “And he purred.  And everything was okay.  I felt like an alien on Earth for so long, and he helped me feel like a human.”

“Reign is finding bigger targets,” J’onn said to the group.  “She wants to teach us an abject lesson.”

“She's going to cleanse the sinners of society locked away,” Alex said thoughtfully.  “The ones that she feels were granted mercy…  She's going to hit Albatross Bay.”

The alarms on the ship started beeping with an alarm.

“No, she's already there,” Mon-El replied.

“She's gonna kill everyone,” Alex worried.  “Prisoners, guards, it won't matter.”

“They'll be fish in a barrel,” J’onn finished her thought.  “We need to go.”

XXXXXXXXXXXX

Reign broke into the Albatross Bay Correctional Facility easily.  She cut down everyone who crossed her path.  Some of the guards and prisoners tried to fight her, but she easily dispensed them and continued on her rampage.  Man after man came charging at her, but none of them were any match for her strength.

Suddenly, she heard something that intrigued her, and she navigated a path towards the sound.

“Heir of Juru, architect of the renewal, I submit to you,” the voice proclaimed.  “For Rao is the light, but he was born of fire.”

“How do you know those words?” Reign demanded.

Coville stayed on his knees in submission.  “I... I was awoken to them.”

“People are quick to claim salvation when faced with death,” she sneered.  “Do you think that is enough for me to spare you?”

“You don't have to spare me,” he replied.  “You just have to let me serve you.”

XXXXXXXXXXXX

Mon-El and the Legionnaires were already suited up and ready.  They strapped the Danvers in because they didn’t have time to unload Kara, and they weren’t leaving the hero’s side.  They had to leave now, or risk more people dying, and Kara wouldn’t like that.  Alex held her daughters’ hands and took a deep breath as they lifted off and headed towards the prison.  The kids squeezed her hands tightly, but they had their red sun bands on, so they thankfully weren’t hurting her.  Maggie and Lena held hands too, and before they knew it, they were hovering over Albatross Bay.  Imra turned on a Bon Jovi song and blasted the tunes over the loudspeakers.  Alex actually chuckled at that, but it seemed to work as Reign came bursting through the prison walls to find out what was happening.

“I think we got her attention,” Brainy stated from the captain’s chair.

“You don’t say?”  Mon-El dropped down from the ship onto the roof of the correctional facility.  “Hi!” he waved cheerfully.

“You will not interfere with my mission,” Reign growled.

“Interfering is our specialty,” Mon-El grinned.

“I've only come to cleanse the sin of this world,” she replied.

“Didn't feel like starting with yourself then?” Imra asked, jumping down from the ship.

“I'm not of this world,” Reign smirked, lifting off into the air.

“Neither are we,” Garth said, jumping out of the ship and shooting Reign with a vicious strike of lightning.

Reign screamed and was thrown back into the fence of the courtyard, but she righted herself quickly and fired her heat vision at Lightning Lad.  Of course, the blast was blocked by Winn’s shield, and Garth just laughed.

“Engaging cannons,” Brainy announced to the team.  He shot Reign with a few beams of the ship’s own firepower, but the Kryptonian ducked out of the way.

“Aloian attack formation,” Brainy said inside Kara’s head.

“Are you fighting?” Kara asked, standing to her feet.

“Oh!  Sprock!” Brainy exclaimed.  “Did I say that out loud?”

“What's going on out there?” Kara demanded.

“Little… little, tiny baby battle,” he stammered.  “Actually, let's keep talking.  It'll help get my mind off this life-or-death scenario.”

Kara scoffed.  “Your mind should be on the life-or-death scenario!”

“I'm perfectly capable of multitasking,” Brainy informed her, picking up some oranges and juggling them to prove his point.  “I'm actually working on your Sunday crossword right now. Six-down is Anguilliform.  Mon-El, evade!” he shouted, dropping the oranges.

“Don't be here, go help them!” Kara insisted.

Brainy nodded.  “For what it's worth, it looks like Supergirl has a pretty great life.”

“These aren't Supergirl's things, they're... They're Kara's,” she said in realization.

Brainy frowned in thought.  “Alex said something similar a few days ago.”

“What?”

“She said Kara Danvers is her favorite person.” And with that, Brainy disappeared right in front of her eyes

Kara looked around the room and noticed her glasses sitting on the bedside table.  She picked them up, dusted them off, and put them on, wrapping herself snugly in her sweater.  No sooner had she done that, she now saw a key sitting on the table where her glasses had been.  She picked it up and walked towards the door.

Brainy fired a missile at Reign, but the Woldkiller just punched it back at the ship, and it exploded, rocking the ship and its occupants.

“Careful, Brainy, you got precious cargo on board,” Rokk called out.

“She knocked out the tri-cannons,” Brainy replied.  “I'll need a minute to get it back online.”  He turned the ship and flew far enough away that Reign couldn’t hit them again yet.

Imra stepped forward and used her powers of telekinesis to throw a few free weights at the Kryptonian, but the Worldkiller just blasted each weight with her heat vision like it was a skeet shooting match.  While Reign was distracted, Mon-El ran towards her with the syringe of Kryptonite, but Imra ran out of weights to throw, and Reign noticed and blew her freeze breath at him.

Winn’s shield did nothing to protect the Daxamite from the cold, so Imra used her powers to create a force field around him.  Unfortunately, the force field seemed to solidify the ice breath and create a giant dome of ice around him.

As Reign stepped forward towards Mon-El, J’onn popped up in front of her by phasing through the floors.  “Time to put you back in the hole you came from,” he growled, phasing her through floor after floor of the prison, but she was hard to hold onto, and eventually, she dislodged herself, sending them both flying through the air and landing hard on the rooftop.

Reep transformed into a lion and tried to attack Reign, but she kicked him off of her, sending him flying through the air like a football.  Garth let loose a wicked bolt of lightning, but Reign used her super speed to duck under it and punch Imra across the rooftop. Rokk stepped up and tried flying around her in circles to create a magnetic field to draw the weight lifting barbells at her, until she flew up and caught him around the ankle, throwing him into the rooftop concrete.  The shields were working to protect them, but it did nothing to keep the Worldkiller from throwing them around like rag dolls.  Mon-El was still trapped in the force field ice bubble, trying to punch his way out while Liin was slowly melting the ice around him.  The Legionnaires and J’onn circled the Worldkiller to try and corner her.

Kara pressed the door key into the lock and turned it, hearing that satisfying snick as the lock clicked open.  She sighed in relief and pulled the door open revealing a blinding light.  She stepped forward into it, and she knew she was waking up for real when the pain hit her.  It wasn’t as bad as before, but it was still present.  She blinked her eyes open and groaned.

“Oh, my God.  Kara!” Alex exclaimed, unbuckling herself and running to Kara’s side, followed by the rest of the Danvers.  “Hey.”

Kara sat up with much difficulty.  “I have to help them,” she panted.

“No,” Alex argued.  “They're using Kryptonite.”

“I don't care if it makes me vulnerable, I'll use it against her,” Kara replied.  “Reign won't see it coming.”  She groaned as she stood up.

“Mama, no!” The kids whimpered.

“It’ll be OK,” Kara promised.  She kissed them on the heads and had Brainy take them back to the prison.

Reign was turning in a circle as the Legionnaires closed in on her.  “If you defend a sinner, you must be a sinner.  And I will wipe away the sin of this world.”

As the ship pulled up, Supergirl revealed herself to the group.

“I thought you were dead,” Reign seethed.

“I got better,” Kara retorted.  “Now!”

Brainy fired at the ice that Mon-El was trapped in, and Kara dove down, grabbed the Kryptonite, and tumbled into Reign.  It hurt, and Kara laid there panting for a moment.

Reign got up and grabbed Kara by her cape.  “Now I cleanse you of your sin.”

Kara didn’t speak.  She was too weak.  She used the last of her strength to jab the syringe into Reign’s neck and backed away.

Reign screamed at the top of her lungs and flew away at top speed.

Kara wanted to go after her, but she was just too drained.  She nodded to the group.  “Good job, guys,” she panted.

Jack put his arms around Kara, and she leaned into his touch.  “I’m so glad you’re OK,” he sighed.

Kara gave him a reassuring squeeze before Brainy lowered the ship, and the gang climbed on board.  The rest of the Danvers surrounded Kara and hugged her within an inch of her life, pouring out love on her with tears in their eyes.

“Hey,” Kara said.  “We beat her.  For now.”  She turned to Mon-El, “Thanks for fighting alongside us.”

“It was an honor,” Mon-El waved her off with a hug.

“I’ve really missed you lately,” she admitted, snuggling into his arms.

“I know,” he replied softly.  “I was really worried about you.  When you didn't wake up…  I know I haven’t been around a lot lately, but I still care about you.”

“I know,” she nodded.

“It was great fighting with you again,” he grinned.

“Yeah,” she agreed.

“I missed that,” he finished.

The rest of the group took turns hugging her.  When Brainy came up to her, she said, “Hey, it's you.  Are you… shorter?”

Brainy paused for a moment and frowned.  “Are you suggesting that I augmented my height while I existed in your consciousness so that you might see me as a more stable and trustworthy figure and therefore work with me to help you?”

Kara giggled.  “Uh, yeah?”

“Yes,” he admitted.  “I did do exactly that.”

Kara laughed again before pulling him into a hug.  “Okay.”

They headed back to the DEO and took Kara down to the medbay to get her checked out.  When she got the all-clear, she took off her ruined suit and sheepishly passed it over to Winn.  She expected the tech to get upset, but he just accepted the suit without complaint.

“Give me a couple of days, and I’ll have a replacement for you,” he promised.

“Thanks, Winn.”

Winn smiled and hugged her for the tenth time since she got back.  “No problem.”

“Actually…” Lena hummed.  “I might have a new suit already made.”

Winn looked at her with betrayal in his eyes.  “You made a new suit without me?”

“I…  I wanted to surprise everyone,” Lena told them.  “I just finished it the other day, but I haven’t had a chance to fully test it yet.”

“I see,” Winn sulked.

“I’m sorry, Winn,” Lena said contritely.  “It’s just that you’ve been so busy, and I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with different things…” she trailed off.  “Don’t be mad at me, please.”

Winn looked at Lena’s pleading eyes and his anger melted away.  “Ah, I can’t stay mad at you.”

Lena hugged him, and the babies kicked him in the belly.

“Oof!” he said, putting his hand on his stomach.  “How do you deal with that all the time?  That kinda hurt.”

Lena chuckled and rubbed her own belly.  “I’m used to it.”

The twins came up and felt the babies kicking.  “We love you, little brothers.”  The babies kicked wildly at the sound of their voices, and the girls grinned.

“I wanna say hi!” Lucy called out from her seat on the other bed.  Lena waddled over to her, since Lucy’s leg was broken and currently propped up, and Lucy cooed at the babies, “Hi, baby boys!  It’s your aunt Lucy!  I love you!”  The babies kicked her hands.  “Yeah, you’re nice and strong, aren't you?”

“Hey,” James called from the doorway.

“Hi, baby!” Lucy called back.

The crowd parted to allow James into the room.  He crossed over to his wife and kissed her.  “How are you holding up?”

“Right now, I’m great,” she replied.  “Dr. Hamilton gave me some pain killers, and they’re wonderful.”

James laughed.  “I’m glad.  I was so worried.”

“I’ll be OK,” she assured him.

“Excuse me for a second,” he said.  He turned around and grabbed Kara and hugged her close.  “I’m really glad you’re OK too.”

“Thanks, James,” Kara replied, squeezing him around the middle.

James returned to Lucy’s side and held her hand.  “Are you guys up for briefing me on the big fight?” he asked.  “Supergirl just woke up from a coma just in time to save a bunch of convicts who were about to be wrongfully executed by a murderous alien.  The city has been very worried, and I’d like to reassure them.”

Kara nodded.  “Yeah, but can we go back to the house?  I really just want to go home and change into my pajamas.”

James looked at Lucy, “Are you up for that?”

Lucy nodded.  “Yeah, can we order food?  I’m starving.”

“Oh my God, yes,” Maggie agreed.  “I want Chinese food.”

Kara grinned.  “Yeah!”

“I’ll make the call on the way home,” Alex offered.  “Let’s go.”

“I’m staying here,” J’onn told them.  “I want to be here if anything else comes up.”

“OK,” Kara nodded, giving him a hug.  “See you later then.”

“I hope you all have a good night,” J’onn waved them out.

The Danvers, Olsens, Legionnaires, Winn and even Mon-El went back to the mansion and squeezed into the living room together.  They called Eve and Lyra and invited them over now that it was safe, then they told James about the fights with Reign today while they waited for their food.  James typed as fast as his fingers would fly over his keyboard while they talked, taking down every word.

When they were done, they all took turns signing Lucy’s leg cast.  When it was Kara’s turn, she signed in a big, loopy script.  “And it's my masterpiece,” she giggled.

“Wow.  That's something,” Lucy laughed.

“Wait, let me... Do that,” Kara said, putting little hearts all around her name.  “What's this one? One-zero-zero-one-zero-one…”

“Brainiac-5,” Lucy answered.

“Oh. Yeah, Kara chuckled.

“That's code,” Lucy laughed.

The rest of the gang filled the cast with signatures, and then returned to their seats.

Alex snuggled close to Kara.  “I'm so glad you're okay.”

“You know I'd come back,” Kara assured her, kissing her on the forehead.

“I was really worried about this one.  Genuinely.  But at least knowing that Brainy could communicate with you, I mean, that helped.  What was that like?”

“So weird,” Kara chuckled.  “It was, you know, it was illuminating.  I had to remember who I was in order to wake up.”

“What do you mean?”

“I had to remind myself that I’m Kara Danvers above all else.  Like you’ve been telling me all along.”

Alex pulled her wife in for a kiss.  “While I'm totally happy for your newfound wisdom…  Um, maybe you could avoid comas in the future?  That would be... I would really appreciate that.”

“You know what, I'll try,” Kara giggled.

“Thank you very much,” Alex grinned, relieved that Kara was feeling so much better.

Finally, the gate buzzer rang, and the TV popped on to show the delivery man on the camera.  Lena pressed the button on her phone to open the gate, and several of the group members went to meet him at the door.  They all moved into the dining room, and attacked the mountain of food like ravenous beasts.

Reign laid on the floor of her fortress and screamed as the Kryptonite worked its way through her system.  The vial laid empty on the ground beside her, and finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she was finally able to stand again.

“What happened?” the Kryptonian priestess asked her.

Reign bowed low to the ground.  “Supergirl stopped me.  She had friends I didn't expect.”

“You have friends, too,” the priestess told her.

“What do you mean?”

“There are others like you,” the priestess replied.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Reign growled.

“You hadn't proven yourself.  But now you have.  You just need to know how to find them.”

“I can help you with the path,” Coville said behind her.

“El mayara,” the priestess said triumphantly.

Coville nodded.  “Stronger together.”

After everyone had left, and it was just the six Danvers girls, everyone changed into their pajamas and piled into the master bed to snuggle.

“I love you so much, Kara,” Lena sighed.  “Thank you for coming back to us.”

“Of course,” Kara replied.  “I can’t leave you guys.  I’m too attached.”

“After this whole thing, I’ve been thinking,” Lena admitted.  “I think we’ve really been taking you for granted lately.”

Kara bit her lip.  She might, kind of agree with that statement, but she didn’t want her wives to feel guilty.

“I want to make it up to you,” Lena continued.  “How can we do that?”

Kara stroked Lena’s cheek.  “You don’t have to make anything up to me, Lena.  You’re my wife, and I love you.”  Kara kissed her to prove it.

“I agree with Lena,” Maggie said.  “You take such good care of us.  I want to do something nice for you.”

“It’s enough just having you here with me,” Kara replied.  “I love you all so much.”

“We love you too, Kara,” Alex told her.

“We love you too, Mama,” the kids chimed in.
