Capítulo 14: Chapter 14 - Lesson Two: Taming and Contract

It's a long road to the rangers tower and I give Micha apple pieces as we go. I need to think about different things today.

First of all, I don't think the Tamer class is enough to survive in the tower. I have no combat training and no way to defend myself. I absolutely have to find a class that allows me to defend myself and my animals. If the death of one of my animals is to be avoided at all costs then I must get involved in the fight. I think it's easier to go through the pain yourself than to go through it through the link. After all, as soon as she moves I feel bad, I can't even imagine how I'll feel if she's hurt. Conversely, I could leave everything to my animals and endure the pain, but I don't want to be someone who just watches on the sidelines while they risk their lives.

Besides, I only have one mouse with me at the moment. There are more offensive choices as animals. I don't dream of training dragons or things like that. Not really at least, although it makes me smile inside that it could happen.

As Fae said, I can make my own family with this class and so far it gives me a good goal besides climbing the tower.

It's strange to think that I'm free to do whatever I want now. I think it's enough for me to visit the infinity of worlds of the tower to create a family and to find my own way freely. I have the impression that this is the first time in my life that I can really say I'm free. My life on earth wasn't like this

And now I'm a Tamer.

Of course, if I consider that being a tamer is not made for me, I will leave this class directly for another, but I'm starting to get used to Micha's presence. Well, if I forget the bitter sweet sensation I get when I look at her, it would be better, but having a reminder is a good thing.

In any case, there is a good news. The flow of the link is gradually becoming easier to understand and easier to use and it's quite strange knowing that an animal can know at any moment what I am thinking and vice versa. There is however something reassuring about it, the impression of having this presence which will not let me down and on which I can rest. It's already something incredible when I think about it. I could never have imagined experiencing such a thing on earth.

*

The path goes by and I finally arrive at the tower; I cross the hall and go inside the Tamers wing where Fae is waiting for me reading a book.

"You took a long time to come back. Well, let's start right away with the lessons and then we'll move on to practical exercises. It's going to take us a while to finish, so don't hope to get out of here just yet. "

She leads me into the same room and I sit down again at a desk. I don't have anything to take notes on, but so far I didn't need to as there is something natural and logical about the things I am learning. Other than the connection, I pretty much remembered what to do with Micha.

"We will first start with the basics of taming. You managed to bond with a mouse yesterday, which means you tamed her to a certain point. The methods for taming are divided in two. The gentle method and the violent method. Let's start with the second.

The violent method forces an animal to sign a contract and forcibly bond with its Tamer. Some animals tend to only listen to the law of the strongest and therefore to create a bond with them they have to submit to the Tamer. There is submission through combat, through pain, we can also blackmail in special cases. If the animal feels ready to "negotiate" by submitting sufficiently, this forces the creation of a bond and the Tamer then presents a contract.

Then there is the soft method which is slower, which can fail, but has more advantages, it is the one you used yesterday. You can raise an animal from birth to make sure the bond is formed. You can feed him hoping that is enough or do something that will convince him to bond like saving his life or doing him a favor in some cases. The bond is only formed when the Tamer becomes important to the animal or has a specific positive meaning.

This way of taming has more advantages simply because the animal does not have to do it, but does it by choice. An animal can choose for example in an extreme case to save your life by dying. Whereas with the violent method, he may very well refuse to obey orders or let you down at a time when you risk dying in order to escape. Each animal is different anyway and the violent method may be best depending on the situation. The key is to use your instincts for this and do not make mistakes since the life of a Tamer depends on his animals.

Of course, the nature of the link can change for good or bad. An animal conquered by force can become friendly, just as an animal trained with the gentle method can revolt and break the bond. This is also one of the problems with the Tamer class. That's why it's best to test the links before you get into trouble to know how far you can go with them and what they accept. The more you know them, the better you can act. Which brings us to the contract which is there to strengthen the link. The more the contract meets everyone's expectations, the more solid it is. "

Fae jumps up from the wooden desk where she is installed and goes to write the word "Contract" in large size on the chalkboard. I say nothing and just stroke the back of Micha who is asleep on the desk.

So far there is nothing impressive and it all seems logical, but at the same time it is very general and seems difficult to apply without experience, but I imagine it will come.

"So what is a contract? As the name suggests, it is an agreement that concerns a Tamer and his animal. It is an upper level of the bond which is the standard level for considering an animal as truly trained. It allows you to bring an animal inside the tower and make it evolve. The contract helps to make the link stronger and less easy to break, as well as to make the orders you send through the link clearer.

The higher the bond level, the less likely you are that the animal will flee. If the level decreases on the other hand, it is because it risks becoming wild again or turning against you.

So you can force an animal to make a contract and sometimes it's the only way to tame them. It is best not to skip the steps, but depending on the situation you may need a contract right away so forcing an animal should still be an open possibility for you, keep that in mind. There are moreover several levels above the bond and contract levels and each has advantages. "

As she speaks, I get stuck on something. I have the impression that she just said something very important to me without me being able to put my finger on it. Or it's just that I imagine the different possibilities that this class offers me. If the link is level zero and the first level "contract" strengthens the link in addition to allowing me to take animals in the tower and evolve what are the effects of the next level?

And there are still other levels of link then? How far can it go? I know it's probably still a long way off, but what can I expect? No, I need to calm down. I'm not there yet and I will probably get carried away for nothing.

"What does evolution consist of? And what happens at the post-contract level? "

- Oh, you are listening ! To answer, your animal can evolve and gain skills of its own in addition to being stronger in a particular area. It happens very rarely, but it is possible thanks to the contract. As for the higher levels, you will first have to progress for that.

-… I would like to know if possible. It would be stupid to keep information from me, I'm the only Tamer here.

- You started yesterday and even if you are the last to date, you are not yet a real Tamer. Everything in its time. We are going to do an exercise with your mouse before you make a contract to see if you got guts. If you succeed I will tell you about the next level.

Fae then asks me to follow her and pick up my mouse, looking a little irritated. Apparently, I made a mistake by insisting. I don't know why I got carried away so easily it's just that… the potential of the class starts to be clearer, but also much bigger and I would like to know what awaits me, what will become possible. However, Fae doesn't consider me a real Tamer and I feel like that's what made her angry, that or insisting that I'm the "only one here"…

I pass with her through several empty corridors which all look abandoned. The Tamers wing looks larger than I expected and appears to be several stories high. Fae ends up opening a door and I didn't expect what I'm seeing. It leads into the countryside. The surroundings appear empty, but the area is huge and seems endless. As I walk through the door, I realize that I am not getting out of a building and that there is no tower nearby. I feel like I'm in a totally different place. There is only the door behind me which still opens onto the corridor of the Tamers' wing.

Fae keeps my mouse and tells me to stay still and just shout when I no longer feel the connection with the mouse.

So is that what she wants to do? Just get away with the mouse? If it's an exercise, I would at least like her to explain it to me.

I just feel like she wants to punish me in a way I can't understand yet...
