Marine Headquarters, Marineford.
Bang!
The door to Kuzan's office flew open, startling him enough to almost drop his newspaper.
"Sakazuki, what's the meaning of this?" Kuzan asked coldly, frowning as he saw the furious Sakazuki storm into the room.
"Is this how a Marine behaves?"
"Sengoku's recommendation letter—did you all plan this together?" Sakazuki demanded, his voice thick with anger and suspicion.
"...Even if I denied it, you wouldn't believe me," Kuzan sighed inwardly, frowning at the situation. The truth was, the recommendation letter had stirred up quite a bit of controversy, and most of the Marine officers were aware of it.
Sengoku's recommendation was strategic, likely influenced by the higher-ups to ensure the choice of the next Fleet Admiral. It was clear Sengoku was trying to build momentum for Kuzan, a move that placed him in an awkward position. Kuzan could only shake his head with a bitter smile.
"Of course I don't believe you," Sakazuki sneered, his eyes glinting with a hint of menace. "You're not as strong as I am. If this wasn't planned, why would Sengoku recommend you?"
Kuzan 's anger flared at the insinuation. The recommendation letter had already caused him enough trouble, and now Sakazuki was accusing him of scheming?
"If you want the position of Fleet Admiral, claim it yourself. Don't waste your breath here," Kuzan retorted, standing up and meeting Sakazuki's gaze with a cold, steady stare. The room filled with tension.
"Maybe my strength was slightly inferior before, but now..." Kuzan glanced at Sakazuki's missing arm, his anger cooling as he shook his head slightly. During the recent war, Sakazuki had lost an arm to the mysterious captain of the 17th division. Although it didn't hinder his daily activities, it had significantly reduced his combat power, a fact that pained Kuzan as a fellow Marine.
However, to Sakazuki, Kuzan's look seemed like mockery.
"You… are… good!" Sakazuki spat, his face twisting with rage before he stormed out, leaving Kuzan stunned and grimacing at the worsening situation. Kuzan hadn't meant to mock him; he merely felt sorry for his comrade's loss. Now, it seemed the rift between them had deepened.
Kuzan knew Sakazuki well; his unwavering commitment to justice had always been extreme. During the Ohara incident, Sakazuki had ordered the attack on refugee ships, demonstrating a ruthlessness that Kuzan found troubling. Such behavior was not fitting for a Fleet Admiral, and with Sakazuki's recent actions, it had become clear that his sense of justice was increasingly warped.
Kuzan looked at the broken door, his expression grim. He knew he had to fight for what he believed in, for the sake of the Navy and the world.
The struggle for the Fleet Admiral position had become the talk of the town, spreading quickly and sparking heated debates worldwide.
"Sakazuki and Kuzan are about to clash! One of them will be the next Fleet Admiral," voices buzzed in taverns, the news igniting fierce discussions.
"I'm backing Kuzan!"
"Why?"
"Just look at Sakazuki's actions. If he becomes Fleet Admiral, we're in trouble!"
"I think Sakazuki is exactly what the Navy needs right now."
"That's ridiculous!"
"No, you're the one being ridiculous!"
Meanwhile, aboard the Moby Dick, Lin Yan skimmed the news with a satisfied smile.
"So, it's finally started."
Lin Yan chuckled, tossing the newspaper aside. He admired strong individuals like Kuzan, whose Logia fruit powers were impressive, even countering some of the drawbacks of devil fruits. More importantly, Kuzan's sense of justice resonated with Lin Yan.
As for Sakazuki, Lin Yan had nothing but disdain.
He doesn't deserve it.
Though events were unfolding as expected, Lin Yan knew he had to prepare. He made his way to Zephyr's quarters.
"Lin? It's rare to see you at this hour. What's on your mind?" Zephyr asked, looking up from a pile of paperwork. With the Whitebeard Pirates short-handed and Lin Yan's aversion to administrative work, it wasn't often Lin Yan sought him out, except during parties or emergencies.
"Can't I visit without a reason?" Lin Yan joked.
Zephyr just gave him a skeptical look, making Lin Yan scratch his head in mild embarrassment.
"Do you have time soon? We might need to head out."
