“And I have to tell you, when she took off her shoes, I nearly melted into a puddle at her feet. She has the most gorgeous toes…” He coughed lightly. “Sorry.”

“May I ask why she felt it was necessary to remove her shoes?”

“We were sitting on the couch, and she wanted to curl her legs under her. She thought it would be more thoughtful.”

“I see.”

“Anyway, her height is ideal for making out.”

I laughed in spite of myself. I’d found kissing Jeremy, who’d been two inches taller, different from kissing Barbara, who at five foot two was lovely to cuddle; I’d been switched on by both of them.

For a moment I thought of Tanner, of the way his upper lip curved, and I wondered how it would taste—

No, was I out of my mind? He worked under me, he reminded me too much of my deceased lover, and he was ten years my junior. It would never be.

“Papa?”

“I’m sorry. I must have drifted off there for a bit. Tell me more.”
