I was working late once again when my phone rang. The voice on the other end spoke before I could.

“Mr Trevalyan.”

“Gino.” I breathed out a sigh of relief. The Wolf’s words had worked on my nerves. “I’m glad to hear from you. Am I safe in assuming you’re alone?”

“Yes, sir. Malossini sent me out to do an old chum of his, Juan Zolo.”

“Ah.” Obviously being a friend of Malossini’s was no more a safeguard than being an enemy. I didn’t relish the thought of one of mine getting his hands soiled doing murder for that scum, but that was the nature of the job. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine, sir. Someone got to him before I did. Not a pretty sight.” Tanner’s voice was grim. “He was gutted.”

“Good lord!”

“Yeah. Someone was handy with his knives.”

“Knives, multiple? Odd, when one would think a single knife would be more than sufficient.”

“Like I said, not a pretty sight.” Underlying the shrug in his voice was a tinge of unease, and that alone caused me concern.
