Capítulo 28: Chapter 27 Battle
The month had passed quickly, with everyone involved knowing of the severity of the situation the preparations were completed in record time. the final plan included Superman intercepting and using his history with Mongol to aggravate him and draw him onto the trap.
When the sensors finally detected him entering the system, Superman "attempted to stop him." His acting was very convincing when he turned and pretended to flee from Warworld's firepower. Mike was worried about him but could not contact him to check due to radio silence imposed on the fleet until the trap was sprung. Mike sat in the Freedom in launch position with the Strike Rouge on the other catapult. Miss Martian and Batgirl were assisting the crew with battle preparations and had trained on the CIC and CIWS controls as backups in case they were needed.
Stark and Reed were concentrating on helping with damage to weapons and life support systems so that Peter and Forge could concentrate on the engines . That way, any damage had a dedicated team to address it decisively. Susan Storm was helping the new crew members on the communication stations. Ben and Wolfsbane were piloting the Archangel, and Brand was in the Captians chair.
At the Watchtower, Mr Terrific and Director Fury, along with Martian Manhunter, were monitoring all scanners. Civilians had been evacuated to safe shelters, or at least as safe as can be expected.
Mike heard His radio crackle to life. "Target has passed checkpoint alpha operation beginning now" This message was passed through the onboard comm systems to maintain the radio silence, similar messages would be passed through all other ships in the fleet using a mixture of telepathy and good old fashioned mirrors with Morse code. This was the signal for ships to get ready to power up as soon as the asteroids made contact with Warworld.
Mike shuffled around in the cockpit. He had altered the pilot suit, adding armor and fortifying the visor, so it resembled the N7 armor from Mass Effect 2. so that he had more protection just in case the Freedom was damaged in the coming battle. He had Made similar improvements to Kitty's pilot suit although the color scheme was sky blue and white for her as opposed to red and black for him.
Mike heard the radio come to life across all bands "All units light him up!" Mike lauched immediately and could see for the first time the warworld. It was gigantic, bigger than most moons, and was bristling with weapon emplacement. All ships in the fleet were concentrating their fire on the north South and West points of the space station. The east received token bombardment to maintain cover but was avoided so that the ground team could board the station.
Mike was forced to concentrate on missle defense as the worworld opened up with a barrage that covered the space around it with missiles all heading towards the fleet.
The Archangel Freedom and Strike Rouge opened up with everything they had. The green lanterns helped to intercept. Between them and Superman, the defenders were able to intercept most of the missiles, although a few found their way through. Smaller ships were torn apart by the missiles, and The Archangel took a hit near the port launchbay, disabling it.
Mike saw the damage the asteroids inflicted on the surface of the warworld as he was intercepting the missiles. Craters 10 Km across pockmarked the surface. A hole opened on the warworld and began to glow as a massive gun charged.
All fire was concentrated on it, but it proved futile. beam blasted out of the warworld towards the fleet. Dr Fate redirected the beam at the last second back into the cannon, damaging it severely.
The fight continued into its fourth hour as the fleet struggled to draw the warworld into position. The cannon had been fired one more time, but after the beam was reflected back a second time, it had fallen silent.
Mike was hurrying towards the landing bay where the boarding team was. An SOS was received that the engine on the quintet was damaged, and the team was in need of extraction. He was using the Freedom to act in place of its damaged engines. The mission was a success with the devices being placed, but the internal defenses had killed 2 and wounded three, one of which was in serious condition.
As soon as the hatch was sealed on the quinjet, Mike grabbed the wings, lifting it all, launching back into space. He made his way towards the Archangel with the Strike Rouge and the Mobile Dolls, laying down covering fire against incoming missiles.
Mike managed to land on the Archangel.
As the medics moved the team to the med bay Mike lauched back into space just in time for the Gungirs to go off. Mike watched as a chain reaction caused damage to the external defenses. Mike could only imagine what happened on the inside of the weapon.
Batman and Fury came over the radio to clear the way they were activating the solar flare system. Mike watched as a beam of light hit warworld. The mirrors focusing the sunlight like a magnifying glass. The sensors on the Freedom estimated the point of impact for the beam reached about the temperature of the surface of the sun.
