To practice the usage of genjutsu, requires someone with which one can use, or at least a being that has a brain that can be manipulated by illusions. Bugs wouldn't work, but most other animals, including humans, would work.
Kurenai needed to have someone that she can practice on and with, and who better to do so then with a member of the Uchiha, specifically one that she wants in particular. Though, she also has Mikoto to practice with, which isn't all that bad since it was clear to Kurenai that Mikoto is better with genjutsu than Obito is.
Or really anyone else that she knows of really.
Genjutsu, Illusionary Techniques, is one of the main jutsu categories which uses chakra. Unlike ninjutsu, the effects of genjutsu are not real, being only sensory illusions experienced by those who fall victim to it. Genjutsu falls under the broad category of Yin Release.
A genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of a target's cerebral nervous system, thereby affecting their five senses. This is frequently used to create false images and/or trick the body into believing its has experienced physical pain.
Because genjutsu affects activity throughout the prosencephalon structure of the brain, humans, dogs and other species of mammal are therefore all affected by genjutsu.
However, the kikaichu, like all insects, lack such a structure to their brains, and so do not even notice it, as insects are ruled almost solely by their senses alone, which makes them immune to genjutsu and gives the Aburame clan an ability to detect it, even when heightened senses become susceptible.
Kurenai had even requested to try making illusions on insects from the Aburame in particular, and she did have such a person to try her techniques on, and it is true that it is rather ineffective.
Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others, similar to brainwashing, by feeding the victim illusive suggestions. Methods include integration with nature transformation, as shown with Water and Lightning Release, where even the ingestion of special pills that only activate when the target sleeps.
Audible genjutsu in particular has been deemed the most dangerous because the user can trap victims from long distances. Kurenai was not too sure about that, but she does realize the potential behind all forms of sensory manipulation.
Despite its usefulness, genjutsu is rarely employed, most shinobi preferring the real, tangible effects of ninjutsu and taijutsu over the imagined effects of genjutsu which hold little influence over the physical world.
The difficulty of performing genjutsu in the first place presents an additional barrier to its use. Genjutsu requires precise chakra control in order to manipulate the target's senses and advanced intelligence to make the illusion convincing, prerequisites that even someone as skilled as Jiraiya lacks.
Thankfully, Kurenai was not so lacking in this areas compared to others, especially if one takes into account that her chakra control is probably better than Rin's, as Rin is, or was, someone that was specializing in medical techniques.
If anything, Kurenai has been framing her genjutsu around the genjutsu skills of Mikoto Uchiha. Even though she may never be able to reach the same level of innate control of illusions that Mikoto has because she has the Sharingan, she can be creative enough and skilled enough to completely outshine her in this regard, especially since Mikoto is not someone that is in particular interested in genjutsu.
From what Kurenai could tell, Mikoto was someone that much rather preferred to to be long ranged fighter instead, relying on her precision.
There are several options to combat genjutsu, as Kurenai would figure out and be told.
A victim's chakra flow, if disrupted enough, can break the caster's influence. This 'Genjutsu Dissipation' or 'Genjutsu Reversal' can be done by the victim themselves, assuming they realize they're under an illusions influence, or an ally who emits chakra into them.
Kurenai even figured out, with the help of Rin, jinchuriki who have formed a good relationship with their tailed beast prefer the latter method whenever they need it. Of course, Rin hasn't actually made any progress in that regard, nor has Kushina either when it came to their status as jinchuriki.
Though, Rin and Kushina both have a higher ability to resist illusions compared to other people, all due to them being able to siphon some small amount of their tailed beasts chakra into themselves because of their seals.
That's right, Kurenai is also aware of Kushina's condition, and through Obito, she was able to understand at least a little bit more about fuinjutsu.
Another method is pain. Pain that is not caused by the genjutsu can bring victims back to their senses.
If a caster's vision is obstructed, such as by the Hiding in Mist Technique, that at least prevents the use of ocular genjutsu.
Possessing a Sharingan renders one largely invulnerable to genjutsu as their acute vision allows them to recognize its flaws and influence. They can also free others from genjutsu by inserting themselves into the opponent's illusion and release it.
Something that Kurenai has been painfully aware of for a long while now, as when she has tried to use Obito as a test dummy, both knowingly and unknowingly, with his Sharingan always active, it was impossible for her to fool him.
Though, she wondered if she had her own Sharingan or something that could perfectly memorize things, then she could probably get rid of this flaw and make her genjutsu work on those whom possess the Sharingan.
Again, kikaichu are impervious to genjutsu because their brain structures aren't sophisticated enough, allowing members of the Aburame clan a method to identify and counter genjutsu.
Then there are other ways to disturb or interrupt genjutsu via other senses, like strong smells, such as those from Chili Pepper Bombs, can counteract genjutsu.
The last method to counteract illusions, is the possibility of using or creating an illusion you yourself made in order to go against another's illusion. Though, this is both extremely complicated and would probably be a waste of time to do so, in the fact that it would basically be placing yourself under an illusion as well.
Even if one could also forgo and dispel the illusion, it would still be a waste overall.
Anyway, after going through this long list of things that she wished to overcome in her process to being the peak person in genjutsu, she devised certain things or ways to get around certain problems.
Sure, illusion in general wont kill anyone, but she doesn't need to kill anyone herself and only needs to keep someone out of it in the moment so that she may then use her real body to kill if need be.
Overall, she believes she has made adequate progress in strength, especially since her goal right now is to be strong enough, or at least skilled enough in many areas, to help Obito with whatever it is he's got going on.
At the same time, she didn't only want to help him, but also to help Rin as well, or anyone else whom she is close to like her family. Sure, most people in the war would have family member in it, and may have even lost some, but thankfully her own family, much like Rin's own family are civilians.
'I wonder what the future holds...' Kurenai thought as she held goals of her own as well, but it wasn't at the same level that someone like Obito or Kushina has. She didn't want to be anything like the Hokage, even if she respects the power, authority, and sacrifice that this position is meant to have.
No, her goals and desires were, are simple.
Much like a lot of civilian women even, and that is the idea of starting a family or having a family of her own. Someday she hoped to do so with Obito.
'Fore now, I guess becoming stronger is something that I can continue to do. Now that I think about it, shouldn't there be some techniques that aren't for combat that could be helpful in the home environment...?' She knew of clones, and she also knew of shadow clones, which would be useful in many.
She is also aware that in this world, it was very easy for someone to grow hungry in power, or be powerful themselves and want even more power.
She would need strength enough to protect herself, her family, her friends, her loved ones. To do something like that, she would need to be powerful enough herself, or could get someone else to be powerful for her.
Though, she much liked the idea of being able to protect and provide for herself in the possibility that things go wrong. 'Now that I think about it, doesn't Obito have his very own dimension...?' She started to imagine building a family with him there, away from the world at large and its problems.
Though, she was only having silly thoughts.

She wasn't blind.
Kushina had noticed the change in the way Mikoto acts around Obito, even if it was subtle in most ways. She may have been raised away from her family, a family of which had easily given her up to Konohagakure because they requested so, but she was still educated or perceptive enough to catch onto the change in their relationship.
It wasn't like she wasn't prepared to consider something like this happening, and she was unwilling to share. It was just... she thought that she would have the opportunity to get her claws into him first.
Though, it is all just her speculation.
Currently, Kushina was starting to consider her own prowess and skills, and while she can say that she is powerful ,she is maybe not up to the level she would like.
Others would say that she is powerful, considering her skills in fuinjutsu, she would also be scared of her as well.
She is called the 'Red Hot-Blooded Habanero' for a reason.
Born into the famed Uzumaki clan of Uzushiogakure, Kushina lived most of her youth being caught up in war, making her seek for a daily peace. At a young age she was sent to Konoha and enrolled in the Academy.
Wanting to make a strong first impression, she proclaimed to her class that she would be the first female Hokage. The other kids laughed at her statement, and began calling her 'Tomato' because of her then-round face and fiery red hair.
This prompted her to lash out and pummel the kids who teased her. This, in addition to her red hair flying wildly around her as she did so, earned her the nickname of Red Hot-Blooded Habanero.
Kushina was eventually told why she had to leave her home of Uzushio and go to Konoha, and because of her special chakra, she was to be the next jinchuriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox.
Kushina was terrified by the idea, but she was comforted by the Nine-Tails' then-current jinchuriki, Mito Uzumaki. Before the transfer was performed, Mito advised Kushina that love was the only way to tame the Nine-Tails and overcome its hate.
Kushina didn't know how to really feel about the older woman, Mito Uzumaki, considering that she was just like herself in a way.
Though, Kushina's own suspicion against Konoha, or at least those higher up and maybe a few others was not something she could just put down or aside because she feels a certain way.
Kushina took Mito's words to heart even with her doubts as she has now, she believes Mito to be right in that love was able to help her. Or at least the love she is able to give and receive from those around her, those with which she could consider her new family.
As she grew up, Kushina became renowned for her beauty and unique ninjutsu style, including the fuinjutsu of her clan. That was a main part of her skillset, and in ways is the only thing that is a part of her skillset.
Fuinjutsu framed every aspect of her current abilities, even though she at least has the basics in other departments. She was even considering whether or not she should take advantage of her chakra reserves, alongside her fuinjutsu knowledge, and try to learn the Hiraishin from Obito all the same.
That way, she can help him in his burden of using chakra when she or he want to go to each other or others. He had already made a design that she felt appropriate to kind of represent her and him 'coming together' in a way... 'Ok, enough looking at the symbolic stuff.' She thought to herself as she made connections, drew lines between points that may or may not hold any value.
That aside, there has also been some interesting developments to do with Uzushiogakure, in the form of her name being passed around there. The only way she even knows of this is because information was being sent back to her here in Konoha through some rumors and stuff.
Supposedly, the people from Uzushiogakure, or at least the survivors have seemed to attach her to the importance of their homeland. Her homeland.
At this point, her name is so important there that they are basically ready to claim her to be their queen... or something similar to that. She didn't know her actions would spread so far, enough so that it would start to even influence the way people looked at her here back at Konoha.
This thing that was going on wasn't of any big importance to Kushina, or at least she didn't see it as anything big at this point.
After all, she couldn't in good faith say she wishes to go back, as Uzushio was complacent in sending her to Konoha for the purpose with which she serves now.
Then again, Konoha is obviously not only stronger, but also because Konoha and Uzushio were supposed to be allies. Yet, that didn't help them now did it.
She wanted Nagato, a member of the Uzumaki, to go there since Kushina could put in a word for him and his friends, yet Konan refused, and while Kushina was unaware of what is going on with those people, acquaintances of Obito's, she let it go.
She found it not her place to tell people what they can or cannot do.
Her thoughts then drifted back to Obito. 'Where is he anyway...?' She would go home, and look around for him, only to notice that he wasn't anywhere to be seen.
Strange since the war is over, he is not going on any missions recently, and he isn't even invited into the Uchiha Police Force like most normal Uchiha are invited into. 'Fugaku Uchiha is just a jealous man...' Kushina thought, snickering at the man.
Kushina would go to those here, mostly Tsunade as she would spend her time lazing around, and come to find that Obito hadn't been home the whole day.
Kushina knew that he also might be visiting Konan, or maybe Mei Terumi in Kiri... 'Now that I think about it, I should hurry up in my attack!' She clenched her fists as she thought this.
She didn't want to come after the others, and wanted to be the first. She wanted him to be her first as well, her only.
'Ok, maybe I have gotten a lot more attached than I thought possible...'
