Chapter 41: Star Elf
After waiting for a couple of minutes for our host to arrive we decided to move our ship forward a bit to let them know this was the main ship.
"I just realized something. What's stopping you from summoning bigger, better ships?"
"Hmm? Nothing, I just like the style of these."
I looked at him with a side eye, not sure why I was even dealing with him right now.
I just looked at the line of ships coming our way and I'm not gonna lie, what they did next made my heart skip a beat.
"Makoto…"
"I know."
They've entered a battle formation. To be specific, they're using 'The Line Of Battle' formation. It's a simple strategy full of openings but it's enough for certain situations. Including this one. Each ship stood in a line like they were all about to play the game 'follow the leader.'
Fortunately one ship stood out from the rest. It was a small ship, about the size of ours. Whereas the ones in formation were each at least 2-3 times larger. They all looked a lot like 'The Man O' War.'
That's not the type of ship you want pointing at you. We had the fire power on our side but all it takes is a few volleys… maybe less and Makoto will be the only survivor.
"Prepare to be boarded!"
Everyone stood ready and at attention. Even I was on my tiptoes waiting for what was about to happen.
The smaller ship finally sailed near us until they stopped right next to us. They didn't have any sails and I didn't see anyone on board. The design looked a lot like a yacht but it was all made out of metal. This was no doubt a ship made for war.
Makoto and I stared at the ship in silence until someone finally walked out of a hatch on what I assumed was the bridge.
They looked human. At least they had the shape of a human, their skin was dark and they had sharp ears. I had a feeling I knew what he was but I didn't want to say it out loud to be rude. Most races and species had a different variant of each other across the world. This one could very well be no different and if that's the case, they might not take too kindly to being compared to other their counterparts.
This man looked at us for a while without saying anything. He just looked at me, then he looked at Makoto and finally spoke.
"Who am I addressing?"
I looked at Makoto and he took the lead, "My name is Admiral Toshi Makoto of the Grove Royal Navy. A pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"A polite demon? Now I've seen everything."
He raised his brow as he showed a sign of respect on his face.
"And you look like a 'Young Master.' Am I incorrect in thinking this?"
He looked at me and I just gave a friendly smile before replying, "Hahaha, that you are. I am Prince Jessup Grove. A pleasure meeting you. May I ask, how do you speak our native tongue?"
The man continued staring at us until he started looking around with squinted eyes like he was searching for something out of place or anything dangerous.
Eventually he responded back with another question, "Grove, I've never heard of it. You must come from far away."
I figured this would happen, this isn't a friendly greeting, he's looking for something.
"Indeed it is, we were planning on going East until we found your island. We're just humble explorers filled with curiosity in our hearts. If we're a bother, we can be on our way."
The man looked at us with caution, "A curious Prince usually results in 'new lands to conquer.' Do you take me for a fool?"
At this point I was starting to get cold sweats, he wasn't wrong and technically that is exactly why I was here.
"There are more ways to fill the pocket than to burn and destroy. I've always been pragmatic that way. Bullets take money and magic makes me tired. I prefer trade over bloodshed, don't you?"
The man whose name I still did not know, squinted and looked back with a cheeky smile.
"If only everyone had the same viewpoint as you do. This world would be a wealthier place. Show me your inventory and we'll see where we can go from here."
Makoto looked back at us and smiled before walking to the captain's quarters where he could grab his paperwork. Leaving me with the no-name captain.
"You never stated your name?"
"Names have power boy. You don't just hand them over whenever you feel like it. I can feel the magic radiating off of you. Surely you know that?"
"For gods yes, but we're not gods. You're not a god are you? If you are, I would like you to let me know so I can grab the expensive booze."
He seemed to find the joke funny, at least he wasn't too religious. I didn't mean for that to come out the way it did but if it helped ease his mind then I call that a win.
"True… it is more of a superstition than anything."
Yet you still don't answer. Well it's not like I cared anyway. Just had to make small talk.
Just then somebody came walking up from downstairs fully dressed and yawning like it wasn't already late in the morning.
"Oh, the princess has decided to grace us with her presence."
Alora showed up at the nick of time looking around dazed and confused.
The man who I'll call Guy 1 just stood and watched this interaction with interest.
"What's going on? Why aren't we sailing?"
Alora was standing by my side eyeing Guy 1 like he was a suspicious person. At least she's not a total idiot.
"I told you we were under attack. If only you were awake… your father wouldn't have been captured and made into a sex slave…"
"WHAT?!" Alora shrieked, she panicked as she was about to grab her mace before she realized she had left it in her room.
Suddenly Guy 1 started laughing, "Hahaha, don't worry we would never try to make your father into a sex slave. He's far too bulky. If anything, we would've chosen your boyfriend instead. He's got all the meat in all the right places, and he's a prince. That's a rare find you know?"
I was left dumbfounded, I didn't expect him to go along with my joke… unless it wasn't a joke?
Alora hissed in anger at the man, "He's my sex slave! You can't have him!"
Well now we were both dumbfounded, but now I was just embarrassed. So I did what any rational person would do. I kicked her overboard.
"Ahh! Jess!"
I should've used paralysis on her.
"Hahahahaha. You two are a lovely couple, are you married yet?"
I just sighed in annoyance, "No, we're just dating."
"Well you have to make sure to bring me to your wedding. The king and I would love to come and visit."
King? He's not the king? Well I guess that should be expected.
"The admiral and I would love to come visit. Even from afar I can tell your city is quite beautiful."
He looked back at his city, almost proud. I could tell from the extra security that they valued their homeland greatly.
"If it weren't for our king all of this would be impossible. He designed everything here."
"Oh? He must be a good man then."
Guy 1 looked at me confused, not understanding what I meant.
"You can always understand a person's personality by watching the things they design. For example, vampires have two paths they can take. 1. Sharp, cold and gothic. Usually lacking in warmth. Or 2. Filled with skulls and screams."
Guy 1 thought about it and asked me, "If you were to do business with either one, which would you choose?"
"Me? Both, of course. The first castle tells me he likes the finer things in life but they're also a very serious and pessimistic person. The second one tells me they're very sensitive and anything can set them off… but they have a habit of performing crude acts. Their merchandise would probably be knowledge or some cursed artifacts. All equally valuable."
He thought about it for a second all the while shifting in every emotion you can think of. From disgust the moment I talked about vampires to shock when I admitted that I would actually trade with them.
"Do you hate the creatures of night Guy 1?"
He looked at me puzzled, not understanding where this new name had come from until he realized I was talking about him.
"Am I that easy to read? Well, I am a Star Elf. So I shouldn't have that much dislike for them. After all, among other elves… if you were to ask about demons and monsters… we would be included in that list."
So I was right. He isn't a dark elf… "Well, just because others may think you're of a different kind than them doesn't mean you have to admit it."
"Very true… but if you're wondering. We have nothing against demon kind."
"Really? You seemed to show such distaste when I mentioned vampires."
Guy 1 had an awkward look on his face, almost like he was nervous to say anything.
"Among elves, there are a group of creatures… they're very similar to vampires but slightly different. We call them 'Blood Elves.' So really it's nothing against vampires, I've met a few when I was younger. They weren't that scary actually, but Blood Elves. They're something else."
I looked around for a bit and until I noticed someone grudgingly walk up to me soaking wet.
"Jessup, I hate sea water."
I looked at her curiously, she seemed to be tapping her foot on the floor board like she always does when she's angry.
"You were about to attack our good friend here. How could I have you attack the poor man? He's just doing his job."
Her eyebrows were starting to twitch and it looked like she was getting ready to hit me any second now.
"Hahaha you two are such a lovely couple. I can tell you get along so well."
"Huh?"
Alora looked at Guy 1 slightly confused. She still didn't know who this guy was, but he didn't look evil, he just wore a regular work uniform like he was 'one of the guys.'
"Ah well, I try my best."
"Try with what?"
Alora looked over my way and glared at me.
"Dealing with you."
That's fair.
