Chapter 15: The witch, Hazel
"Hi Hazel!" he put the suitcase down, went and gave Hazel a bear hug.
"Yeah, its been a while, Dad asked me to stay with Grandpa for a while, you remember David, my grandpa? Yeah, he's not getting younger, you know.. but I'm back for good, I think. I met Skye and Wynter in the plane and what a coincidence that Skye is your niece. I offered to pick them up at the junction." he explained.
"That's good, that's great." Hazel said, but before she can continue, the door of the house opened again and a tall man with a great big smile came out, and said in a booming voice, "You're here! Baby!" eyes only for Skye.
I felt Skye stiffened and smiled awkwardly. "Hi Dad!" she uttered.
"Come here! Look Hazel, she's all grown up now! Your mom did a great job with you!" he pacified.
Now, that, is a bombshell! Her Aunt and Dad? What the H? My mind was running riot and I couldn't figure out what I was thinking when Skye went to her Dad and gave him a awkward embrace. He gave her a kiss in the head. Obviously he does have great affection for his daughter, I observe.
"Wynter this is my Dad, Peter, Dad this is Wynter, you remember I told you about her?" Skye introduced us.
"The infamous Wynter, my daughter never stops singing your praise!" her Dad said waiting for Skye's reaction.
"Daaaaaaaaaad, you exaggerate!" Skye is grinning now, at least.
I don't remember Skye telling me anything about her Dad and now, I know the reason. I wouldn't want to tell anyone about this. I don't even know what to call him..
"Hi Uncle, how are you?"
I look at Skye but she's avoiding my gaze. Then I remember our conversation relating to Ash knowing Hazel as a 'nice lady' and Skye's comment that her Aunt is a witch. Now, I know why Sally called her a witch too. Not being judgmental, I just thought there must be a reason for things, even like these, to happen.
A good witch, a bad witch or bewitching, is yet to be found, with us. I meant Skye and me. I hope for goodness sake, she stayed a good witch towards us for the rest of our stay. I crossed my fingers.
"Come in and have some lunch with us, that goes for you too, Ash." encouraged Hazel.
"I would if I could Hazel, you know me, but I said to Arthur I will volunteer at the beach for the next couple of days. Its almost time for me to head off, I don't want to be late." looking at his mobile for the time.
He then look at me and showed me his dimples. "I need to go, can I call you tomorrow? I can pick you up and show you around town, Skye can come too if she wants" he asked.
"I don't know what Skye's plan for tomorrow, can I let you know later?" I smiled.
"Sure, no worries, you can call or text me anytime!" he then extended his hand, I took it and shake on it.
As he was walking towards his truck, I remember something. "Ash," I called, "Thanks for picking us up."
He turned around and gave me his bright smile, that went brighter saying, "No worries."
My heart beat quickens. No worries he said, I think I got plenty to worry about, one of them feels like I'm developing irregular heart palpitations!
I watch him jump in the driver seat, heard the engine come to life, reverse back out of the driveway and away he went.
The day passed by in a blur after Ash went. Hazel, Peter and Skye has been playing catch up and I stayed in the room they provided for us. Afternoon came and went by. I've tried to busy myself by calling Nan and talking to her for a while, then I updated my FB page uploading some photos Skye and I have taken on the way here. Before I knew it's night time, after we had dinner, Skye and I went to our shared room.
After she shut the door, she sat down the end of the bed, look at me and sighed.
"Well, now you know how thoroughly abmormal my family is.." shaking her head.
"Hey, don't worry about it, it's got nothing to do with you." I started.
" I never told you about them because its just... I'm embarrassed and scared you would look at me differently" she said nervously.
"Hey, I'm your friend, you can tell me everything and I will still stick with you like glue." I assured her, sitting next to her and putting my arms around her shoulders.
"Thanks Wynter, you are the best! I'm so glad you're here!" she exclaimed, leaning her head on mine. "I didn't think I can stay here without you."
"You know I will always be your friend, whatever happens!" I said with conviction. "and if ever you wanted to stay somewhere else, I will go with you." I gave her a choice, reassuring her that whatever happens, the bond between us will never break.
