Chapter 3: Hot cocoa
We all walked to the kitchen and Skye and I sat at the breakfast table while Nan went straight at the butler's corner, taking three mugs off the cupboard for our drinks.
Hot cocoa. Such an innocent offer from Nan, or so we thought. There is a saying, you didn't know what's coming until it hits you straight between your eyes. This is one of them.
"So, Skye, how is your Mom?" Nan was making conversations as she was making our hot cocoa.
"She's good Nan, she's off men or so she said, Mike did a number on her and I think she's had enough of his bulls... crap."
I was pissing myself laughing when I heard Skye try to extricate herself from swearing in front of Nan.
Nan came to sit across the table from Skye as I watch the two of them talk about Skye's Mom and her boyfriend.
"Nan, why didn't you open a coffee shop? This hot cocoa is the bomb! You make great drinks!" Skye started to compliment my Nan's hot cocoa. " Seriously, I would be there to drink your drinks everyday of the week!"
" Oh yes I know you would be there all the time, for free drinks!" Nan said laughing.
Then they started talking about our holiday, like where we're going and who are we staying with, if it's just the two of us, then Skye said something that is so stupid that I just want to club her.
"Wynter plans to find a boyfriend in this holiday, or so she said, I dared her in highschool but she couldn't find the right one then or so she said."
I couldn't believe what I just heard. Nan looked at me and then at Skye with a look like " you're not seriously telling me this are you?"
Seriously Skye needs to know when to shut it. So I play it cool..
"Nan, you can't believe everything Skye says, she's a moron sometimes, actually its more like all the time! You know her since she was 6. She's a joker." Then I stood up, walk over to the sink with my cup on my hand and drained the rest of my drink with one gulp and said,
"Nan, you don't have to worry about that, you know me I don't stray away from my plans. I walk straight and not look at the side show alleys!"
"Wynter, I am not worried about that, I know very well how focus you are in achieving your goals, what I'm worried about is you need to loosen up a bit, you need to have a bit of fun sometimes, not just serious all the time, remember that you only live once, you're still young and you need to live your life and stop worrying about what comes next all the time. You don't need to plan everything from A to Z, take it as it comes and make the most of it, don't be afraid to fall in love or to make a mistake, because that's how you grow." she said with concern and love in her eyes.
"I understand that you promise your Mom, you'd do something of your life but that doesn't mean that you have to stop living your life just to achieve your goals, it's time that you go out there and have fun, not to lose yourself but to find yourself"
Nan smiled and coaxed me to come and give her a hug. I went willingly with tears in my eyes. I gave her a big hug.
"Wynter, you know I love you and I am very proud of your achievements if your Mom is here, she would also be very proud of you and would tell you the same thing."
I couldn't say anything. I am totally speechless. I thought of all people, Nan would be the last to understand, after what happened to my Mom, but I was wrong. Totally wrong. She is strict with me in many ways but she never once voiced out that she was concerned about me not getting enough fun.
Geez, who's the adult and the child here? I was about to say something when Skye interrupted.
"That was beautiful Nan, my Mom never once encouraged me to have fun, she always said "Get a job" that's the only encouragement I got from her." she said in melancholy.
I couldn't help but laugh when I heard Skye say that. My Nan, bless her heart, asked Skye to come over and share a hug with us.
Skye quickly got up and said, " I'd take that offer anytime!" with the most beautiful smile she could muster.
" Skye, you heard what I said to Wynter, my advice to her goes the same for you, you are never different from us, you're like my second grand daughter, surely you know this?" Nan said and gave us both a pat on the head "You're both my good girls!"
I love my Nan.
