Chapter 1: Reflection

Looking in the mirror, I cannot look past the five scars. Four on my left side that, if not in a straight line from my temple to my jawline, could be confused for freckles. The other one is on the right side of my face, almost like a dimple if it wasn't the size of a quarter. I close my cloudy blue eyes and remind myself to breathe.

That yokai is gone. His soul was crushed in front of me by my savior. But I still can't get the words he growled at me as he held me in the air by my face; warm blood trickling down from where each of his claws burrowed deep.

"How did one who smells so tasty go this long without being consumed." He whispered with a twisted smile.

His rancid breath making me choke as he moved his face closer to mine. The moon reflected on his rows and rows of razor teeth as he open his mouth and raised me above it. A scream froze in my chest as I realized there was no chance of surviving this.

As I closed my eyes and waited for the inevitable, I heard a soft metallic sound. Right after that sound, I felt myself falling to the ground and opened my eyes just as I was caught by a pair of strong arms. I couldn't see his face, it was covered by a midnight black mask only two small slights where his his should be. He lifted his head and looked behind me.

The yokai was dissolving into a thick black smoke. Soon, there was nothing left but a light fog, and that too was dissipating. My savior sat me down and tossed a necklace at me in one smooth motion.

"Wear this at all times if you do not want to be eaten," my savior stated as he turned away from me.

"Thank y..." I started to say, but before I could get the second word out, he was gone.

That was two months ago and while my physical scars are healed, my mental ones are still fresh. I had never seen a yokai before that day, I thought I lived in a safe world. Now, every time I leave the house I clutch my necklace that I was gifted so hard that I now have a large callous on my right palm. While I would like to look for the man who saved me, I am too afraid to do anything else than walk to and from school.

At least today is the last day of school before summer break. I won't have to worry about leaving my house or yokai for a whole month. Or so I thought.
