Chapter 11: Chapter 10
Cold sweat dripped from Rosette's forehead. She knew Cara would figure it out, but the timing was awful. "There was an accident," she said.
Cara gazed towards the mirror as Rosette continued. "You know Haleen".
"The moon witch".
"Yes, so Mathias and Haleen fought, Mathias won but Haleen put a curse on him and he is suffering. He came to me, I don't know how but he did and I knew the second I left him to die, the king might find out it was in front of my house and he would send a search party for me, so I had no choice, so yeah, it's a mess". Rosette completed her explanation.
"It's simple. I like it," Cara said as she smoothed her fingertips against the mirror. "But my dear Rosey, what's the game with the other one?" Soon, the mirror showed images of Mathias and Roven. Mathias was sitting still while Roven was eavesdropping through the door. Maybe some should tell him it's no use.
"You mean Roven, he just happened to find Mathias while staying with me. I'm guessing the king sent him".
"That's a possible guess. So," she said, turning to face Rosette. "How may I be of service to you?"
"Kin flower." With those two words, Cara's world was ruined. "I need to find Kin Flower."
Both girls stared at each other until Cara finally broke the silence, "You didn't hit your head, right? Cause the Rosette, no. Rosabella Frinchard wouldn't go looking for the herb".
Rosette, stunned after hearing her real name, couldn't hold herself. "Now don't look at me like that", Cara snapped at her, "I knew something like this was bound to happen. As your one and only cousin, I think it's safe to say that you're creating a pile of shit".
"It's not like I have a choice", Rosette's eyes started to have a glitch of gold flares, "I didn't want this, I didn't want to leave my village, I didn't want to spend my money on some fancy horse, I didn't want to search for Kin flower and I most defiantly didn't want to help an enemy nation, especially if he is a General".
Cara's thought paused for a bit, "He-e is what".
Rosette realized what a great mistake she had made.
"Oh my heavens!" she said, turning her gaze to Rosette's. "They didn't force you or anything, right?"
"No," relieved Cara. But I did have a small duel with the pretty boy. He found out about my magic and thinks I'm you. "
Cara bewitched by the response couldn't pretend not to care, "He thinks you're me".
"The evil witch of the south that turns people into frogs".
"That was just one time, they were harassing the poor girl. How was I supposed to watch that?".
"Secretly lure them through seduction and then turn them into frogs".
"That could also work," Cara muttered to herself. Before being a village girl, she was the esteemed high fairy of high society. She used to receive approximately five hundred proposals from high-ranking nobles, but she refused them, thinking marriage to be bothersome.
"Now", Rosette walked towards the mirror, "We were talking about Kin flower".
Cara's eyes changed in an instant. She looked at Rosette with pity. "Do you think they will leave you alone after all this?"
As always, Cara's question brought hope. "You remember the whispering oath, the one us Jaden fairies are so permanent about", said Rosette.
Cara's eyes were astonished as she glared, "You didn't".
"It's not like I had a choice." The whispering oath is a semi-neutral oath mostly made for alliance and law in the Jaden Kingdom. A few fairies found it romantic as time passed and made it a ceremonial oath for weddings and first-time couples. It's signed by blood, so if a person breaks their oath, they will be punished on whatever the basis of the oath.
"I signed his name when he was injured, his blood was easy to inquire".
"So what have you decided on his betrayal?", asked Cara with a particular gesture.
"Death, what else?" Rosette gave out a blunt response that made her cousin wonder. You don't know how to have fun, do you?"
"It's best to be plain and simple, if he dies he cannot harm me or do any sort of thing".
"What about the other one?".
"I think I can take him".
Silence filled the gap between them. "Are you sure about that?" Cara asked with extreme confusion.
"After fighting with him once, I think I could take him".
Again, they glanced, their stares as sharp as a blade. Cara's eyes twitched with ethereal green sparks, but they were no match for Rosette's gold flears.
"Fine", said Cara after giving up, "I'll help you, but only if I accompany you, that is", she pointed her finger at Rosette who looked shocked with a dumbfounded expression.
She was not expecting the last-minute change, especially if that someone was Cara also known as Charlotte Deven, the highly beloved daughter of Marquis Deven, Rosette's uncle-by-law.
Rosette's illegitimacy was nothing as dead in front of Cara who grew with no resentment like Rosette's siblings. She saw Rosette as a royal with no support, so upon pity, she gave little Rosette some assistance such as being involved in her education, making her participate in social gatherings, or just being with her was enough.
"Only if you help me". Cara's smile beamed in an instant, "Don't worry Rosey, I won't be a burden to you".
Cara looked in the mirror only to cast an incantation, she placed her hand on the mirror which shined green sparks. Then suddenly she pulled out a book from the mirror surface.
Rosette instantly realized what that book was, "Lucian's Grimoire", she said with shock, "You have Lucian's Grimoire!".
"Don't look at me like that, I didn't steal it, just borrowed it".
"This was locked up at the scholar university in Jaden, you're telling me you just borrowed it".
"Yes", said Cara with no embarrassment, "Now, let's help your friends".
"They are not my friends", Corrected Rosette.
"Then what are we going to call them?", Cara asked.
"A pair of psychos who we are helping for free", she said.
