Chapter 80: 80. Soothing

October 10-13 (Pregnancy week 31-32)

“The police have confirmed, there were several members of the One-Seven gang slaughtered overnight,” J’onn informed her.  “Our investigations found out they were all killed by heat vision.”

Kara sighed.  “It’s starting.”

“I called Winn,” J’onn told her.  “He said he’d be here in an hour.”

Kara looked at the time.  It was only 5:30am on Tuesday.  “Alright,” she grumbled.  “I guess that gives me time to get something to eat.”

“See you in an hour,” J’onn said, hanging up the phone.

“What’s going on?” Alex mumbled sleepily.

Kara kissed her wife on the forehead.  “Nothing you need to worry about yet.  Go back to sleep.”

“OK,” Alex whispered, closing her eyes.  “Sleepy.”

“I know, baby.  I love you.”

Alex’s answer was just snoring.

Kara giggled to herself and went to take a shower.  That always helped her wake up better.  Instead of making coffee and breakfast for herself at home, she decided to pop by Noonan’s to see Amy and order some sticky buns and a giant mocha latte - her favorite on-the-go breakfast.

As soon as she entered the restaurant, Amy greeted her with enthusiasm.  “Kara!  I was going to come see you when I got out of work.”

“Oh, awesome,” Kara grinned.  “Lena and Maggie told us you were coming back.  I can’t wait for you to meet The Legion!  They’re so amazing.  You’ll love them.  One of them is…  Well, I can’t say that right now, but you’ll see.  Lyra misses you too.  You’re her favorite sparring partner.”

“Aww, will she be at the… gym today?” she asked, meaning the DEO.

“Yeah, she should be,” Kara nodded.

“Excellent.  The usual?” Amy offered.

“Am I that obvious?” Kara chuckled.

Amy shrugged.  “Well, after yesterday, I wouldn’t expect anything less.  In fact, I’m buying you breakfast today.”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” Kara demurred.

“Oh, yes, I do.  It’s the least I can do for my friend,” Amy insisted.  “Besides that, Tara would kill me if I didn’t.  She’s very generous, and she adores you.”

“Aww, I adore her too.  She’s such a sweetie,” Kara purred.

“That’s my girl,” Amy said proudly.

Kara smiled at her.  “I’m so glad you two found each other.  You both deserve someone great, and I think you make a great couple.”

Amy got a mushy look on her face.  “Yeah.  And to think I was gonna give up on love.”

Kara giggled.

“She’s upstairs if you want to say hi,” Amy informed her.

Kara looked at her watch.  “Yeah, I have time.”

“OK, she’ll love it.”  Amy handed over Kara’s food and latte.  “I’ll see you later.”

“Sounds great,” Kara smiled.  She headed out of the restaurant to the door on the side of the building where she knew Amy and Tara lived.  She rang the buzzer and waited to be let in.

“Kara!  It’s great to see you!” Tara exclaimed happily.  “What brings you here?”

Kara waved her bag of goodies at the other blonde, “Breakfast.  I can’t stay long, but I wanted to say hi.  It’s really important to me to try to spend time with the people in my life that I can really trust and talk to about things.”

Tara’s eyes melted with compassion, and she gave Kara a big hug.  “Come on, sit down with me.”

Kara followed Tara into the living room, and they both sat down on the couch.

“How are you holding up after the news yesterday?” Tara asked.  “I know that must have been really hard for you.”

Kara sighed and sipped her coffee.  “Yeah, it’s been hard.  People have been staring at me more than ever, and now, it’s not as friendly as it used to be.  I see a lot more suspicion in people’s eyes, and I’ve only been out for about half an hour.”

Tara took Kara’s free hand in her own.  “I hope you know that we don’t see you that way.  We have a lot of respect for you.  You’re so brave and kind, and I know that’s the real you.  Supergirl may be a beacon of hope to some people, but Kara Danvers is a light all her own.”

Kara’s lip trembled, and one lone tear escaped her eyes, but she clenched her teeth together to hold the rest in.  “Thank you, Tara.  That means a lot to me.”  She squeezed the other woman’s hand gratefully.

“And you mean a lot to a lot of people,” Tara reminded her.  “Don’t forget that, especially when someone tries to make you feel bad for being who you are.  You deserve to be who you are because who you are is amazing.”

Kara couldn’t resist giving Tara another hug after that.  “I hate to do this to you, especially after such kind words, but I have some investigating to do with Winn, and I need to get going.”

Tara nodded.  “It’s OK.  Thank you for coming to see me.  It’s always good to see you.”

“You too,” Kara said, hugging Tara again.  “Hopefully I’ll see you on Saturday at the latest.”

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.  We’ve already gotten the presents,” Tara grinned.

“Cool, I can’t wait!  Bye!”

“Bye!”

Kara ate two of her sticky buns before realizing Amy had given her 8 of them, instead of the 6 she normally ordered.  Kara shook her head and chuckled.  Maybe she would give one to Winn and J’onn.  Or maybe not.  She was pretty hungry.  Bye the time she got to the DEO, she had one left, and in the interest of fairness, since she didn’t have one for both of the men, she just ate it too.  “Hewwo,” she mumbled around her mouthful.

J’onn rolled his eyes.  “Good morning, Supergirl.”

“Hey, Kara,” Winn said groggily, sipping his own coffee.  “We were just about to look at any video feeds there might have been at the murder site.”

“OK, let’s do it,” Kara prodded.

Winn spun around in his chair and started typing on his keyboard.  There seemed to be only three CCTV cameras in the area, so they watched all three.  Unfortunately, the gang members must have known where the cameras were because they were in a blind spot, so there was nothing to see except a few quickly flashing lights and then nothing.  “Well, that was completely unhelpful,” Winn huffed.

Kara growled.  “How are we supposed to find this person?”

“I hate to say it, but you might have to do some late night patrolling,” J’onn suggested.

“Yeah,” Kara sighed.  “That’s not going to make my family very happy.”

“Well, at this point, it’s a matter of life and death, so they’re going to have to understand,” J’onn told her.

“They will,” Kara pouted.  “To be honest, it’s gonna be harder for me.”

“I know,” J’onn said sympathetically, placing his hand on her shoulder.  “But you’ll be looking out for them in this way as well.  Just keep that in mind.”

Kara nodded.  “I will.  Thanks, J’onn.”

“Now, what are we going to do with this Vicky bitch?” Winn growled.

“You’re not doing anything,” Kara warned him.

Winn scoffed.  “Yeah, right.”

“I mean it Winn,” Kara fisted her hands on her hips.  “Don’t do anything to her.  That’s not who we are.”

“It’s not who you are,” Winn corrected.  “I’m perfectly happy to bankrupt her and have Lyra go beat her up.”

“Winn, no,” Kara glared at him.

“Kara’s right,” J’onn agreed.  “We don’t retaliate this kind of behavior.  Keep it civil.”

Winn scowled.  “Fine.”

“I just want to focus on the Worldkillers right now,” Kara begged.

“I’ll keep my ear to the ground,” Winn promised in defeat.  “Go back home for now.”

Kara internally vacillated between staying and trying to help somehow, or going home and spending time with her family.  When she realized she had zero ideas, she gave in and agreed to go home.  When she arrived at the mansion, she found Lena and the twins eating cereal at the kitchen island.  “Hello, my darlings,” she greeted them with kisses.

“Hi, Mama,” the girl said cheerfully.

“Hi, honey,” Lena smiled sleepily.

“Did you sleep OK?” Kara checked.

“Mostly,” Lena replied.  “The boys wanted to play at 2am, but I rubbed my belly and they fell back asleep an hour later.”

Kara kissed Lena’s stomach and spoke to her sons, “Night time is for sleeping, boys.  Daytime is for playing and being awake.”  The boys kicked her hands, and she smiled.  “My sweet little ones.”  She gave Lena another kiss and sat down at the island with them.  “Speaking of being awake at night, I’m going to have to start doing nightly patrols again to find these Worldkillers….”  When she saw what Lena was eating, she frowned.  “Kiwi in Cocoa Pebbles?”

“Don’t judge me,” Lena warned.

Kara put her hands in the air, “Whatever makes you happy, my love.”

“Don’t patronize me.  You’re the living garbage disposal.”

“Hey!” Kara objected.  “What did I do?”

“You got me pregnant,” Lena retorted.  “Deal with it.”

The twins snickered.

“What are you laughing at, garbage disposal juniors?” Kara teased.

Jessie made a loud growling sound as she took her next bite of food, trying her best, but failing at sounding like a machine.

“Silly,” Kara chuckled.  “What’s on the agenda for today, boss?” she asked Lena.

“You tell me, oh mighty Supergirl.  You have a fan club to attend to, right?”

“Fan clu-  You mean The Legion?” Kara checked.

Lena raised her brow as if to say “obviously.”

“I thought maybe you’d like me to do some actual work today,” Kara shrugged.

Lena shook her head.  “Until these Worldkillers are under control, consider yourself on Supergirl duty.”

Kara pouted.  “But I like being able to work with you.”

“I like it as well, darling.  This isn’t a punishment,” Lena reminded her.  “You’re going to be fighting against three Kryptonians.  I want you all to be ready.”

“OK, well, can we have lunch together today?  Just the two of us?” Kara batted her eyes.

Lena smiled.  “I’d like that.”

“Yay!”  She kissed her wife on the cheek.

“We wanna come!” the kids whined.

“No,” Kara said gently but firmly.  “Lena and I want some alone time.  We’ll see you guys later.”

The twins wrinkled their noses in displeasure, but went back to eating.

“Can we get a puppy?” Jamie asked randomly.

“Excuse me?” Lena huffed.

“Rao, no!” Kara exclaimed.  “What the heck are you thinking?”

“Why on God’s green earth would you think we need a puppy when three out of four of your parents are expecting babies?” Lena complained.  “We need a puppy like we need a hole in the head.”

“OK, geez, I’m sorry I asked,” Jamie sighed.

“You’re lucky it was us and not your mom and Maggie,” Kara pointed out.  “They probably would have used swear words.”

“Good point,” Lena agreed.

Jessie went to pour another bowl of cereal, but Kara stopped her.  “Why don’t we make you guys something a little better for you than a bunch of cereal?”

“It was Lena’s idea!” Jessie complained.

“Guilty,” Lena pleaded.  “In my defense, I was feeling a little hangry.”

“OK, well, let me make you some omelets or something,” Kara offered.  “Alex and Maggie will probably be up soon anyways.”

Lena smiled gratefully.  “Thank you, Kara.”

“I wanna help!” Jamie offered.

“OK, honey, you can help chop veggies,” Kara encouraged.

“Me too!” Jessie jumped in.  “I can do them fast like the pros now!”  She made a show of cutting up a tomato in a matter of seconds.”

Kara grinned.  “Nice!  You should show Amy what you can do.  I’m sure she’d be impressed.”

Jessie grinned proudly.

“I want to try that!” Jamie bounced excitedly.  She took an onion and had it peeled and diced in under 20 seconds.

“You girls are really coming along with your super speed,” Lena complimented them.  “I’m proud of you.”

The twins beamed at the praise.  “Thank you!”

“Mama, are you gonna sue that Vicky lady for going on TV and talking bad about you?” Jessie wondered.

“Yes,” said Lena.

“No,” said Kara.

“Excuse me?” Lena huffed.

“Honey, she didn’t say anything that wasn’t true,” Kara pointed out.  “She didn’t call us names, and she didn’t even come right out and say what she was implying.  What can we hold against her?” Kara pointed out.

Lena scowled.  “I’m sure I can find something.”

“I’d really rather you do nothing, Lena,” Kara begged.  “I don’t want to be caught up in some revenge plot.  I just want to let it go.”

“You don’t have to be involved,” Lena tried.

Kara gave her a Look.  “Lena, no.”

Lena growled loudly.  “Fine.  Be that way.”

“It’ll be OK, sweetheart,” Kara kissed Lena on the head.  “We have plenty of love and support to get us through this.  We’ll be OK.”

Lena thought about all the people they were surrounded by and realized Kara was right.  They had enough of a buffer between themselves and the outside world that they could get away with pretty much whatever they wanted (within reason).  Their family and friends would still love them.  Would still support them.  The Superfriends had known about the cause of their pregnancies for months, and no one seemed to be grossed out or made to feel awkward because of it.  Damn Kara and her ability to make everything seem better than it was.  Lena really wanted to take Vicky out.  She was a Danvers now, though, and Danvers didn’t exact a hateful revenge.  A Danvers worked through a problem diplomatically.  Graciously.  A change of strategy was required.  She had to let go of that Luthor hate and be the Danvers she was born to be.  “Alright, Kara.  I’m with you,” she submitted.  “I won’t do anything to her.”

“Thank you, my love,” Kara told her with a kiss.  “I have a feeling I’m going to be having this conversation a lot today.  I already had to warn off Winn from doing something stupid.”

“Well, what do you expect?” Lena asked.  “We feel very protective of you.”

“I appreciate that,” Kara replied.  “You make me feel very loved and protected all the time.  I just don’t want anymore trouble than we’ve already got.  You know?”

“I know, honey,” Lena nodded.  “I won’t make any trouble.”

“Thank you.”

Kara picked up the members of The Legion and took them to the DEO.  The gang agreed that they should continue training every day they have the chance.  Kara needed to get the hang of working with them so there weren’t any mishaps when an actual fight came around.  Alex suggested they go out to the desert where there was more room to maneuver and try new things, so that’s what they did.  Kara and The Legion spent the morning out in the middle of nowhere showing each other new moves, and getting a feel for fighting together.  They all had a blast, but some of the Legion was a bit tired after so much time in the heat working hard.  When 11:30 rolled around, they drove back to the DEO, and Kara went to get everything ready for her lunch with Lena.

Alex stomped into the DEO.  When she got to the briefing room, she stopped at Winn’s desk and leaned over him so no one would overhear her.  “Winn, get me Vicky Donahue’s number.”

“Uhh,” Winn said nervously, “K- Kara told me not to do anything to her.”

“You’re not doing anything to her,” Alex explained.  “You’re just giving me her phone number.”

“Wha-  What are you gonna do?” he squeaked.

“I’m going to have a word with her,” Alex replied simply.

“You’re, uh… You’re-  You’re not going to kill her are you?” he had to check.

“If I wanted her dead, I’d be asking for her address,” Alex growled.  “So give me the goddamn number already.”

“Alright, alright!”  Winn typed furiously on his computer, pushing it as fast as it would go to pull up Vicky Donahue’s contact information.

Alex typed it into her phone and took off without so much as a thank you.  She was too angry right now.  Seeing that bitch on TV again this morning made her start her day out feeling furious.  What gave her the right to go around exposing Kara like that?  She got to her office and locked the door behind her, then dialed the number on her private, untraceable phone line.

At first, there was no answer, but she kept calling, and on the third try, Vicky answered the phone.  “Hello?” she said, sounding confused.

“Vicky,” Alex growled.

“Who is this?” Vicky asked nervously.

“Don’t play games with me, Vicky.  You know who this is.”

“Alex?” Vicky’s voice broke just saying it.

“Bingo.”

“What are you going to do to me now?” Vicky’s voice hardened.

“I just wanted to tell you that you’re a piece of shit.  Kara is the kindest, most gentle and most generous person on this planet, and all you do is keep being hateful.  You embarrassed her, and for what?  To prove some sort of point?  I just-  I don’t get it.”

“That’s right, Alex, you don’t get it.  You never seemed to understand that you could have anyone you wanted.  And after Kara showed up, it seemed like you never had eyes for anyone else.  It was infuriating.”

“Oh my God, Maggie was right wasn’t she?” Alex exclaimed.

“Excuse me?” Vicky huffed.

“You were jealous!”

“What?!” Vicky spluttered.  “I wasn’t jealous!”

“Yeah, right,” Alex scoffed.  “You knew you never had a chance with me because of her, so you wanted revenge.”

Vicky tried to say a lot of different things, but nothing seemed to want to come out.

“Well, that answers my question of why, I guess,” Alex sighed.  “I just wish you wouldn’t have taken your anger out on her.  She’s a better person than you could ever hope to be, and I’m proud to be with her, no matter whether she’s a little different or not.  It just makes her more special.”

Vicky said nothing.

“Goodbye, Vicky,” Alex finished.  “I hope you and your bitterness are happy together.”

Today was Eliza’s first day in her official capacity at the DEO.  She was hoping to meet the new folks that Alex had told her about, but by the time she finished filling out all of her paperwork, the team had left to go train with Kara in the desert.  That was fine.  She could meet them later.  Instead, she followed J’onn to her new office, and then he passed her off to Dr. Hamilton to show her the ropes.  Of course, she’d worked there with Alex before, but that had been in a limited capacity, and she hadn’t gotten to see everything.  When she was done with the tour, she sniffed Alex out in the lab just to say hi and to let her know that she was officially a member of the DEO.

“Congratulations, Mom,” Alex grinned.  “It’s gonna be so great having you around.  You’ve really come through for us in the past, and I know you’re gonna be great here.  I just hope you don’t get too sick of me.”

Eliza chuckled.  “I was hoping the same thing in reverse.  I know it might be a little awkward having your mom around all the time.”

“No way,” Alex waved her off.  “Everyone loves you here, including me.  We Danvers make a great team, and that’s largely in part because of you.  You helped us thrive when life got tough, and now look at us.  We’re doing great.”

“Yes, you are, sweetie,” Eliza replied with a hug.  “I’m very proud of you.”

“I’m proud of you too, Mom,” Alex sniffled.  “I hope you and Dr. Hamilton will get along well.  She’s pretty smart.”

“I think we will,” Eliza nodded.  “She definitely seems to know what she’s doing.”

“I’m sure you two will learn a lot from each other,” Alex smiled.

“I look forward to it.  Can we have lunch together today?” Eliza requested.

“Yeah, sounds great,” Alex agreed.  “I’ll come find you when I’m ready.  I have some work to do here until then.”

“OK, sweetie, I love you, and I’ll see you later.”

“Love you too, Mom.  See ya later.”

Eliza headed back to the medical bay, and not long later, Winn came and found her.

“Hey, Eliza!” he greeted her cheerfully.  “I’ve got something for you.”  He held out a tiny black box to her.

“What’s this?” she inquired.

“That, my good lady,” he pointed to the device, “Is your new best friend.  It’s a shield.  It’ll protect you from bullets, heat vision, all kinds of things.  Don’t lose it, and don’t leave it behind.  All you have to do is have it in your pocket.”

Eliza grinned at him.  “You’re quite the clever young man, aren’t you?”

“Well,” Winn blushed.  “I try my best.”

“I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, Winn, but I’m really glad that you’re friends with my daughters.  It does me a lot of good knowing that you’re here looking out for them.”  Eliza patted him on the shoulder.

“Aww, don’t go making me cry, now,” he playfully swatted at her hand.  “It’s my pleasure to look out for them.  They do a lot of good for the world.”

“Yes, they do,” Eliza agreed.

“OK, well, I’ll get out of your hair,” Winn waved.

“Oh, come here,” Eliza pulled him into a hug.  “Thank you, Winn.”

“You’re welcome,” he replied.  “See you later.”

“Bye, sweetie.”

Maggie dragged herself into work, but her heart wasn’t really in it.  Even though Lena and Winn had built her that amazing shield, she was too tired to show it to the Chief today.  The baby had woken her up several times in the night kicking her in the ribs, and she was sore and crabby.  She hadn’t been at her desk for more than five minutes when the Chief walked by, took one look at her, and ordered her into his office.

“Hey, Chief,” she yawned, as he closed the door behind her.  “What’s up?”

Chief Williams put his hand on her shoulder.  “You look like hell, Danvers.  You don’t have to be here today, if you don’t feel up to it.”

“I…” she warred with herself how to answer.

“Don’t tell me you’re fine,” he grumbled.  “I can clearly see that you’re not.”

“I’m just tired,” she finally answered.  “I’m not sick or anything.”

“I want you to go home and rest,” Chief Williams said gently.  “Please, Maggie.”

She had no idea why, but all of a sudden, Maggie started to cry.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” he asked, pulling her into his arms.

“I have no idea,” she whimpered, leaning into his embrace.

“You want me to have someone come and get you?” he suggested.

She shook her head and sniffled.  “No, I can just call Lena’s driver back.”

“OK, well, you do that, and I want you to sit in here until he comes back.  I don’t want people bothering you.”

“OK,” Maggie agreed softly.  She texted Andy to come back and get her, and she tried to pull herself together.  She had cried more since being pregnant than she had in the rest of her life combined.  It irked her that she had so little control over her emotions.  She was used to being the stolid one.  Thank God for the Chief and his willingness to protect her reputation as much as he could.  She was extremely grateful for him, more so than ever.  She sat in the office while she waited for Andy, and Chief Williams just worked on his computer.  Before she left, he gave her one last hug and wished her well.

When she got home, the twins met her at the door like worrisome little mother hens.  “Maggie!  You’re home!”

“Is everything OK?”

“Are you sick?”

“You don’t look very well.”

“You should probably go lie down.”

“Are you hungry?  We can make you something to eat.”

“I’m fine,” Maggie told them.  “I’m just a little tired.  Go back to your tutor.  I’m going to go lay down on the couch.”

Jamie and Jessie pouted at her, but she gave them each a hug and a kiss on the forehead, and they relented and went back to their lessons.  “Call us if you need us!” they insisted.

“I will,” she promised.  She laid down on the couch in the living room, turned on the TV and promptly passed out.

Kara had their lunch all set up.  All she had to do was to pick up Lena from Catco.  She texted her wife to let her know she was on the way and to be ready.  Kara had chosen to drive the Maserati for their date, and she pulled up to the front of the building as soon as Lena was walking out the front doors.  “Hello, my lovely,” she called, climbing out of the car to help her wife into the passenger seat.

“Hello, darling,” Lena answered, giving Kara a kiss before sitting with a groan.

Kara hopped back in and buckled them both. “Are you ready?”

“Yes,” Lena smiled.  “Where are we going?”

“You’ll have to wait and see,” Kara smirked.

Lena chuckled.  “I hope it’s not too far.  I’m hungry.”

“There are some snacks in the glove box,” Kara informed her.

Lena laughed.  “Of course there are.”  She opened the compartment in front of her and pulled out a Snickers bar.  Normally, she wouldn’t eat that kind of thing, but Dr. Landry had insisted that she increase her calorie intake, so she indulged herself.  She absolutely loved chocolate, and she liked having an excuse to eat more of it.  “Thank you for sharing with me.”

Kara picked up Lena’s hand and kissed the back of it.  “Of course.  What’s mine is yours.”

“Likewise,” Lena grinned.

Kara chuckled.  “You’ve made that abundantly clear.”

“Good.”

“I hope you know that I would still love you just as much, even if you didn’t have money,” Kara said seriously.  “You’re such an incredible person.  I don’t know how I ever lived without you.”

Lena raised an eyebrow at her.  “Are you buttering me up for a reason?”

“Lena,” Kara sighed.  “We talked about this.  I like to give compliments to the people I love, and I love you so much it hurts.  I don’t need an ulterior motive to dote on you.  That’s one of the main reasons I wanted to have you to myself today.  I just want you to know that I genuinely treasure you.”

Lena’s lip trembled.  “I’m sorry, Kara.  I’m trying, I really am.  It’s hard to fight that reflex, though.  My mother trained me well.”

Kara frowned at the mention of Lillian.  She really wanted to punch that woman into space.  “I’m not your mother, Lena.  I’m your partner, and I’m with you because I adore you.  Not because I have to be, and not because I feel obligated.  I genuinely want to be around you and make you feel just as good as you make me feel.  And I don’t mean that in a sexual way.  I mean, well, maybe it’s both sexual and not sexual.  But either way, I want you to be happy.  I don’t want you to always be looking over your shoulder wondering when the next blow is going to strike.  That’s no way to live.”

“I have plenty of enemies, Kara.  Just because I changed my name to Danvers, it doesn’t make people automatically forget that I’m a Luthor.”

“Even if that’s true, I don’t want you to expect that from us.  Especially from me,” Kara pleaded.  “I want to be gentle when the world is cruel.”

Lena smiled adoringly at her.  “And that’s probably one of the best things about you.  Why I fell so hard for you.  Your hands can crush a rock into powder, but you choose to be so kind and soft.  I love it.  I love you.”

“Thanks.  I love you too.”  Kara made another turn, and suddenly, they were in the parking lot of a park.

Lena looked around, expecting it to be full of people, but there was no one around.

“No one ever comes to this park in the off-seasons,” Kara explained.  “There’s a way better park two blocks away that has play equipment for kids, whereas, this is just a little wayside by the river.”

Lena grinned.  “You were really serious about being alone with me. I hope you don’t expect me to have sex with you out here.”

Kara’s eyes nearly bugged out of her head.  “Rao, Lena, no!  That’s not why I brought you here.  I just want to spend time with you.  That’s all.”

Kara got out of the car and helped Lena get up, then she opened up the trunk and pulled out a large picnic basket.  “Tada!” she grinned.  “I got your favorite from Big Belly Burger.”

Lena’s mouth watered at the thought of her favorite bacon cheese burger with the works.  Kara knew her so well, and she was all on board with feeding Lena more calories, so of course she would do this.  “Excellent, thank you, Kara.”

Kara took Lena’s hand and led her to a nearby picnic bench.  Lena had to sit sideways on the end because her stomach was too big to sit properly.  She didn’t mind, though.  It wasn’t too uncomfortable.  Kara sat across from her and started divvying out the food.

“So, are you having fun training with The Legion?” Lena inquired.

“Oh, yeah!” Kara replied.  “It’s a blast.  They’re really great people, and I know Liin is several generations after us, but I swear, some of the faces he makes are all you, especially with those green eyes.  It’s crazy.”

Lena laughed.  “That’s interesting.”

“Yeah, and Reep is so hilarious, and Brainy is so smart.  They’re all great.  I’m loving them.”

“I’m glad, sweetie.  I’m glad we’ll have so much help with the Worldkillers.  Any lead on finding them?”

Kara shook her head.  “No everything has been a bust so far.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Lena frowned.  “Is that why you’re going to be working at night again?”

“Yeah, maybe I can find her that way.  This is harder than I thought it would be.  I didn’t expect her to be so sneaky,” Kara complained.  “Most of the bad guys I’ve fought just come right out and bait me, but not her.”

“I have every confidence in you, my love,” Lena encouraged.  “You’ll get her.”

“Thanks, Lena.”

The pair of them finished their food, and then Kara moved behind Lena to cuddle her and rub her back for a little while.  Lena groaned sinfully when Kara’s fingers dug into her flesh.  “Oh my God, that feels great.”

Kara kissed the back of Lena’s neck.  “Let me know if it’s too much pressure.”

“It feels amazing,” Lena sighed.

They stayed there for another twenty minutes, until James texted Lena to see if she was OK.  She had been gone for quite a bit longer than she said she’d be, and he was worried.  They had yet to stop Morgan Edge, and they were all just waiting to see when he’d strike next.  Until then, everyone had decided to keep a close eye on her.  She assured James that she was safe with Kara, and she’d be back soon.

Lena leaned back onto Kara’s chest for a few snuggles, so Kara moved her hands to Lena’s belly and felt the boys moving around.  She kissed Lena’s forehead, and the CEO pulled her into a brief liplock.

“I love you so much, Lena,” Kara whispered.

Lena smiled and nuzzled Kara’s neck.  “I love you so much too, Kara.”

A car pulled up into the parking lot, and Lena’s heart raced until she saw it was just an elderly couple with some fishing gear.  The couple barely acknowledged them, giving Kara and Lena a cursory nod and heading back to the river.  Lena calmed down, and breathed out a relieved breath.  Sometimes it was a little overwhelming for her to be recognized in public, even if the people were nice.

“We should go,” Kara said with one more kiss.

“Ooh, help me sit up, please,” Lena requested.  “You’ve turned me into a limp noodle,” she chuckled as Kara gently eased her forward.

Kara giggled and helped her wife stand up.  “Thank you for having lunch with me, sweetheart.”

“Mmm, no thank you.  You spoil me.”

“Thank you for letting me spoil you.”

“My pleasure.”

Kara cleaned up their mess and helped Lena back to the car.  They both grinned at each other the whole drive back to Catco, and when they pulled up to the building, they spent more than a moment kissing each other goodbye.

“Have a good day, sweetheart,” Kara said dreamily.

“I will, thanks to you,” Lena purred.

Kara watched to make sure that Lena got inside safely before returning to the DEO.

Maggie awoke to the twins calling her name.  She frowned at being woken up, blinking her eyes open.  “What?” she grumbled.

“We made lunch,” Jamie informed her.

“You should probably get up and eat something,” Jessie added.  “You’ve been sleeping a long time.”

Admittedly, Maggie knew they were right, but she was still so damn tired.  She didn’t want to move.  “What did you make?” she asked to stall a little bit.

“Tuna noodle casserole,” Jamie replied.  “And a fruit salad.”

That sounded really good to Maggie, and her stomach rumbled just thinking about it.  “OK, OK.  Help me up.”

The twins gently lifted the detective to her feet and helped her get her bearings before letting go of her and leading her into the kitchen.  They watched her cautiously.  They were worried about her blood sugar getting too low.  They knew all too well how that felt, so they weren’t about to let Maggie experience that, if they could help it.  Jamie pulled out a stool from the kitchen island so Maggie could sit, and Jessie hurried to get her some food.

“Here you go, Mama Maggie,” Jessie chirped happily.

Maggie blinked at the nickname, and then grinned.  “Thank you, girls.”

“You’re welcome.”  Both girls gave their stepmom a big hug before grabbing their own meals and sitting down at the island with her.

“How are your lessons going?” Maggie inquired just to make conversation.

“Good!” the twins answered at the same time.

“This is so much better than going to regular school,” Jamie said happily.  “There’s no one to pick on us, and we can go through our lessons as fast as we want.”

“Yeah, at this rate, we might even get to graduate early,” Jessie beamed.

“Then what?” Maggie pressed.

“Then we can do whatever we want!” said Jessie.

“I expect you both to go to college.  I don’t want you slacking off just because you graduate early.  You can go wherever you like, but you’re going.”

Jessie pouted.  “But I wanted to come work at the police station with you!”

“Jessie, I went to college, and I guarantee you, I wouldn’t have come as far as I have if I hadn’t done that.  Everyone in this family goes to college.  Lena went twice.  I don’t care what you study, as long as you get at least a bachelor’s degree.  If you’re going to be a police officer, I recommend that you study criminal justice like I did.”

“But-”

“No buts,” Maggie interrupted.  “Everyone will agree with me, just ask them.”

“Can I study art?” Jamie asked curiously.

“Like I said, study whatever you want, but you’re going.” Maggie was firm, but not angry.  “I love you girls very much, and I want you both to be able to thrive in life, not just squeak by.”

The girls nodded in concession.  “OK,” they agreed.  “We love you too, Maggie.”

“What time does your next tutor get here?” Maggie asked, looking at her watch.  It was almost 1:00pm.

“Not for another half hour,” Jamie informed her.

“And who’s coming?”

“Emily, our English tutor,” Jamie answered.

“Do you like her?”

Both the girls nodded.  “Yeah, she’s really nice, and she’s a good teacher,” Jessie told her.

“Yeah,” Jamie agreed.  “And she’s read so many books!  It’s fun to talk to her about them.”

“I’m glad,” Maggie smiled.  “I’m glad you don’t have to go through so much stress at school anymore.”

“Me too!” the twins echoed.

“Are you going to go back to sleep after this?” Jessie asked Maggie.

The detective pursed her lips in thought.  “I probably shouldn’t.  If I do, I might not sleep tonight.”

“Can we snuggle for a while before Emily gets here?” Jessie asked with her big doe eyes.

Maggie chuckled.  “Sure, sweetie.”

Jessie clapped her hands with a grin.

The three of them finished their lunch, cleaned up the dishes, put the leftovers in the fridge, and went into the living room to cuddle on the couch.  Each of the twins held Maggie’s hands and laid their heads on her shoulder.

“I love you girls,” Maggie told them, stroking the backs of their hands with her thumbs.

“We love you too, Maggie,” the kids answered, nuzzling her shoulders.

“Your sister is awake,” Maggie pointed out.  “I’m sure she would love it if you sang to her.”

The girls perked up excitedly.  They knew all the babies loved it when they sang to them.  They discussed what to sing, deciding on “Your Song” by Elton John.  It was something that Kara sang to them all the time, so they knew it by heart.  As they sang, the baby flailed happily, poking her little feet out so much that they could see Maggie’s stomach move.  It made them all giggle.

“I think she’s gonna be a dancer like us!” Jessie exclaimed.

“I just hope she’s a good person,” Maggie replied.

Jamie smiled at her.  “With you as a mom, how could she not be?”

Maggie melted a little inside.  Yes, it was Jamie’s fault that she’d gotten pregnant in the first place, but when her step-daughter talked like that, the detective found it hard to hold it against her.  Especially since Maggie had not only come to terms with expecting a child, but she was actually looking forward to it.  She kissed both of the kids on the head and squeezed their hands to convey her affection.

All too soon, the doorbell rang, and Emily popped up on the TV.  The girls sighed, kissed Maggie on the cheek and on the belly, then went to let their tutor in.

The detective tried not to fall asleep again, but her eyes were heavy, and she was weak to fight it.  Eventually, she gave in and laid back down on the couch, falling asleep almost instantly.

Eliza got her wish of meeting the Legion when she and Alex went down to the mess hall for lunch.  They all seemed oddly excited to meet her, but she took it all in stride.  They were a pleasant bunch, and apparently Liin was one of her descendants through Kara and Lena’s son Jack, who wasn’t even born yet.  That was a weird mind frack.  Although the really strange part was how much he still resembled Lena in quite a few ways, in spite of the fact that he was many generations down from her.  Lena must have some strong genes.

Eliza, Alex and The Legion sat around talking and getting to know each other for a good hour before Alex declared she had to get back to work.  She bid them all a pleasant afternoon, leaving Eliza alone with the others.  The Legion pounced on the opportunity to get stories about when Kara and Alex were young, giving her their rapt attention.  She indulged them with a few funny recollections until Kara came looking for them and dragged them back into the training rooms.

They all invited Eliza to come check out what they could do, so she followed along with them.  They were quite impressive, and she made sure to tell them so.  Part of her wished that they could stay and help Kara out with Super duties permanently, but she knew they would eventually have to go home somehow.  They had insisted that they repair their ship soon so they would be ready when the time came.  When Eliza brought it up, Kara insisted on talking to J’onn and Winn to see what they could do, and then that was the end of Eliza’s visit with them.

Alex paced the DEO briefing room.  She was bored.  J’onn, Winn, and Brainy had gone to work on The Legion’s ship, Kara was training with the remaining members of The Legion, and Lucy had the day off.  Also, her mother had been whisked away to tend to an agent that had been injured in a training accident (unrelated to the Supers), so Alex was on her own.

She tried to make small talk with Vasquez, “Hey, what’s up?”

“Nothing to report, Ma’am” the analyst replied brusquely.

“No, I mean, hey, what’s up?” Alex tried again.

Vasquez blinked at her.  “If this is code for something, I didn’t learn it.”

“Never mind,” Alex swallowed a loud sigh.  Susan wasn’t a big talker, and they weren’t technically friends, so this wasn’t exactly surprising.  “Carry on.”

She paced a few more times around the room, and then pulled out her phone to text Maggie and Lena.  Unfortunately, neither of them answered.  At that point, Alex decided it would be safe to return to her lab to get some actual work done.

At one point, Kara brought Amy by the lab just to come and say hi before they returned to the training rooms with the others.  A few hours later, Alex finally got a text back from Maggie.  Apparently, the detective had been sent home from work and had been sleeping all day.  Alex convinced her to come to the DEO with the kids, so the agent could see her wife.  It always felt extra comforting to have Maggie with her at the DEO.  If the detective wasn’t so hell bent on staying on at the police station, Alex would have convinced her to work for the DEO by now.

Maggie showed up about an hour later, with Jamie and Jessie.  They all gave Alex hugs and kisses, and then the twins headed down to the training rooms where Kara and the others were waiting for them.  Alex took Maggie to her office where they could just sit and talk.  Not that they had anything really important to talk about, but it was still nice to connect.  They were still very much in love with one another.  They both agreed that if they weren’t pregnant, they’d be having sex on the desk right now.  Instead, they settled for a few hugs and kisses and lots of sweet nothings.  It was enough for the time being.

“AMY!” the twins cheered, seeing their friend at the DEO once more.  They ran to her and hugged her tightly.

“Jessie!  Jamie!” Amy held her arms out to receive her bear hugs.  “Oh, it’s always good to see you girls.”

“It’s good to see you too,” Jessie beamed.  “I’m glad you came back.  We’ve missed you.”

“I’m with them,” Lyra agreed.  “It’s not the same without you.”

“Where’s Mon-El?” Amy asked, looking around at all the new faces and not finding him.

“Oh, he hasn’t been training with us since he started going to school,” Kara informed her.  “He still goes out on nightly patrols sometimes, but mostly he’s really hard to get a hold of.  He’s either in class, studying, or working.”

“Ah,” Amy nodded.  “I see.  I’m glad he’s going to school, though.  Good for him.”

“Yeah, we’re pretty proud of him,” Kara smiled.  “He’ll be at the baby shower on Saturday, so you’ll be able to see him soon.”

“Good deal,” Amy replied.

“We see you’ve already met The Legion,” Jamie observed.  “Aren’t they cool?”

“Yeah,” Amy agreed.  “It’s especially cool that you have your own Danvers descendant here.  Although, to be honest, I’m a little jealous of Rokk’s powers.  They seem like a lot of fun.”

“I like Jack’s powers!” Jessie told her.  “It’s just like Elsa!”

Amy laughed.  “Yeah, I guess you’re right.  Now I want to see him build a big ice castle like she did.”

Jessie’s eyes lit up.  “Yeah, cool!”

Jack chuckled.  “I don’t know about a whole castle.  Maybe a small house.”

“That would be awesome to see!” Jamie exclaimed.

“Maybe later,” Kara interrupted.  “We’re here to train right now.”

“OK, OK,” the twins grumbled.

When dinnertime rolled around, J’onn, Winn, and Brainy returned to the DEO.  They claimed to have been mildly successful at figuring out a few things, but the ship wasn’t fixed yet.  J’onn insisted that the Danvers head home for the night.  He had been coddling Alex quite a bit lately, and today seemed to be no different.  She would normally complain, but she just wanted to go home and eat and rest.  She was exhausted.

Kara took The Legion back to the hotel, and Andy took the rest of the Danvers home.  When Kara got home, she headed straight for the kitchen to help the twins make dinner, leaving the moms-to-be to sit in the living room to get comfortable.  When Lena got home not long after that, she looked like she could pass out where she stood.  She kicked her heels off and cuddled up next to Alex on the couch.  She apologized profusely for not texting back earlier, but apparently, she’d had a crazy busy day, and she’d barely gotten out on time.  Alex accepted a few kisses as an apology and left it there.  She couldn’t hold a grudge when Lena was trying so hard.  At least the CEO had made it home for dinner.  That was more than Alex could say for herself sometimes.

They all had a nice family dinner, watched a movie, and went to bed.  Except for Kara.  Kara headed out to make her midnight rounds in an attempt to catch the Worldkillers.  She was out all night, but she didn’t see anything, only later to find out that the Worldkiller had sneakily struck again.  This rogue Kryptonian clearly did not want to be stopped, but Kara had no idea what else to do.  She tried over and over again each night, but each night the Worldkiller was steps ahead of her.  It was getting tiring.  On Friday night, Kara didn’t even bother to go out.  Saturday afternoon was the baby shower, and she wanted to be rested when their house was overrun with people.  She didn’t even want to think about the Worldkillers this weekend.
