Chapter One

Copper stood outside the forest and gazed through it. How he yearned to explore it, but was forbidden by his mother. She would confront him the moment he set one paw in it. She would probably call him back at any moment, so he ventured back to the barn where they lived. Rocky, his father, was probably out hunting around now, and would return soon with prey for them.

Copper scampered back up the hill and slid under the fence. His mother was sitting outside the barn watching his siblings, Splash and Sage, wrestle in the dirt. Copper didn't mind getting is paws wet, though he did mind a lot of mud and dirt. He liked to keep his pelt as clean as possible.

"You didn't go into the forest did you, or past the moor?" His mother, Dawn, asked him.

"I went around the border and stood at the forest edge." Copper explained. Dawn sighed and licked his ear.

"Thank you for respecting the wild cat's borders. We don't know what they are doing down there and why, but we do know there are a lot of them, and they don't appreciate trespassers." Dawn scooted him closer to her.

"I'm not afraid of them! I'll tear them to shreds if they try to hurt us!" Copper leaped up and arched his back. Dawn let out a meow of laughter and stood up.

"Rocky's back! Rocky's back!" Copper heard Splash exclaim. He spun around and raced towards his father, whom was carrying a large rabbit and two mice.

"Rocky caught us a rabbit!" Sage exclaimed.

"Did you go into the wild cat's territory? What was it like? Did they attack you?" Copper asked him. Rocky set down the rabbit and nuzzled Copper.

"I got a little too close to the border and some cats confronted me. But one of them let me take the prey and go. I still wonder if we was the leader of the wild cats." He picked up the two mice and carried them to Dawn while Copper sank his teeth into the rabbit.

"Why are you always so keen on going into the forest? It's filled with nothing but some filthy wild cats who eat bones!" Splash asked him.

"We eat bones too. Except it's the bones of our prey." Sage reminded him as she started eating the rabbit.

I wonder how much prey they get with all that territory. Copper glanced back at the lake where the cats lived. He dreamed of one day visiting the lake and seeing what it is like up close.

"Kits! Get behind me!" Rocky hissed. "Something's coming!" Copper followed his litter mates behind his father and peeked between his legs. Some cats were hopping over the fence. Are they the wild cats?

"It's good to see someone took shelter in this barn after all these seasons." One of them said.

"Go away! This is our territory!" Dawn snarled. One of the cats snickered.

"We should teach them a lesson for stealing our prey!" He exclaimed. The same cat who spoke before cuffed him around the ear.

"Quiet Blazecreek! We didn't come here to teach them a lesson!" Blazecreek? That's a weird name. Copper thought. "My name is Stonestar, and this is my deputy Eagleshade." He nodded to a grey tom with a torn ear.

"You were the cats that stopped me when I went hunting!" Rocky exclaimed. Copper poked his head out from behind Rocky to get a better look.

"We came to greet you. It has been a long time since someone has made shelter of this barn." Eagleshade said. "Floss was a good cat. Always keen and strong." He said. Who's Floss? Copper thought.

"We live in the oak forest down there. If you ever need any help, feel free to come to us. Our camp isn't far from the border." Stonestar mewed. Copper took a step towards the strangers.

"How much prey do you get with all that territory?" He asked.

"Copper! Get back here!" Dawn hissed.

"No it's fine. Kits are always curious." Stonestar chuckled. "We don't own the entire territory, just the oak forest. Windclan owns the moor that we cross to get here." He pointed to the hillside Copper liked to play on.

Windclan? Why are there so many strange names?

A she cat strode up to Stonestar. "It's almost sunset. We need to send out patrols." She said.

"Right. We'd better be heading back." He turned away. "Like I said before, feel free to ask us for help." Stonestar and the rest of the cats bounded away.
