Chapter 26: The size of his heart

Lady Sarah was right. The banquet that the Grand Duke was hosting was not an event a noble lady would want to be in. We hadn't entered the premises yet, but the loud cheering as if we're heading into a bloody arena had reached my ear.

Was there some sort of fight occurring inside? Their cheering sounded as if it was an interesting battle.

"Does the noise bother you?" he asked while I gazed up at him.

"Not at all." I shook my head and smiled. "Your Grace."

He raised a brow while scanning me briefly. "That's too bad. We're not going in."

"What?" A frown instantly appeared on my lips and my reaction seemed to please him. Was he teasing me? It was quite effective, if so.

"I'm quite worried about my fiance and I'm afraid her frail heart can't take such a barbaric banquet." A charming smirk resurfaced on his lips; proof he was playing with my 'frail' heart.

Was he studying me earlier to see if the banquet would scare me or excite me? If it was the former, we would head in and if it was the latter, we won't?

'If only I knew that's his reasons, I would've shown him an act that can move him to tears.' I clicked my tongue, but then felt his hand squeeze mine lightly.

"Come with me," he said, guiding me towards the main entrance of the main residence. My reluctance paraded on my face, but he didn't seem to mind.

"Welcome back, Your Grace, Lady Ross." The butler waiting in the entrance placed his palm across his chest and bowed. "I had prepared a room for Lady Ross just as you ordered, Your Grace."

For a moment, I doubted my ears from what I heard. I looked at Luis, wide-eyed, only to see his brow wriggle.

'A, what?' I gasped in disbelief, gazing at his shoes, and sized it up. 'Oh, my goodness... that's one hell of a size.'

"You, eyes up." Luis placed his index finger on my forehead, pressing it up. "If you are so curious about the size of my heart, why don't you ask politely, and maybe I will pity you?"

The baffled look on the butler and a few maidservants who welcomed us looked at each other in surprise. Meanwhile, I cleared my throat, smacking my lips before facing him.

'Please?' were the words that I failed to say.

"I know Your Grace has a big heart." I nodded encouragingly, boosting his ego. I turned to the butler and raised my brows.

"Right? His Grace has a big heart?"

"Ye — yes...?" the butler stammered. Goodness, gracious. Did he have to look as if he had committed a mortal sin by saying Luis has a heart of gold?

Luis' lips parted, but only a deep sigh came out. He scratched his temple with his index before gesturing to the butler to lead the way.

'Gosh... I can see fun times ahead.' I grinned mischievously, walking in confidence, as this estate would be mine soon.

As we followed the butler, I snuck a glance at my fiance. I furrowed my brows upon noticing his burning red ears. Was he flustered because of me? Oh, my! What a surprise!

"Don't look at me like that, Lady Marsella," He growled in a low tone without casting me a look.

"Apologies." I pursed my lips and set my eyes ahead.

In the back of my head, though, I wanted to test how many buttons I could press before he could reach his limits. It was better to know when and where I should draw the line.

'Alright. We still have a long night. I will experiment later.' A smug grin appeared on my lips. I bit my lower lip to suppress my mischievous smile when he gazed at me but to no avail.

We soon reached the room they prepared for the beautiful me. To my dismay, it was not what I expected. I thought my fiance would want to get to know me privately, but that didn't seem to be the case.

"You look disappointed." He leaned to my side and whispered, causing my expression to die down.

Rest in peace, my emotions.

I looked at him, only to see him shrug with a smirk cemented on his face. "Poor thing."

"!!!!!"

"Thank you for coming in here on short notice, Doctor Carlton," Luis greeted the physician inside the room.

"It's nothing, Your Grace. I rushed in here when I heard you urgently needed medical attention." The old physician, Doctor Carlton, who was around in his dying age, bowed curtly at my fiance.

I glanced at Luis, sighing deeply. "Are you hurt anywhere, Your Grace?" I asked, although my real question was whether I would become a widow soon, so I could store my tears in advance.

"It's not me who needed immediate medical attention." He shook his head before setting his eyes on me. "Her."

My brows raised as I stared back blankly at him. "Me?"

My eyes shifted to the physician, who was also looking at me. He nodded, upon noticing the same question I was about to ask him.

"My fiance seemed to be in a terrible state. I want you to look what her problems." Luis explained, making Doctor Carlton nod in understanding. "Also, if you can check her head, please do so. I think that's where the problem lies."

What the... I glared at him, only to receive a playful smirk and an indifferent shrug.
