Chapter 13: Ill Motivated Dhritarashtra

During his visit to Hastinapura, Akrura saw many of the great men of the city like Bhishma, Dhritarashtra, Vidura, Dronacharya and his son Ashvatthama and many others. He met Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, in the presence of Vidura, the younger brother of King Dhritarashtra.

Akrura knew that after the death of Pandu, the father of the Pandavas and the husband of Kunti, his blind brother Dhritarashtra was ruling the kingdom.

King Dhritarashtra did not listen to the advice of grandfather Bhishma nor of his younger but wise brother Vidura, that the eldest of the Pandavas, Yudhishthira should rightfully be made king after him.

Dhritarashtra was a greedy man and wanted his evil son Duryodhana to become king after him. This was not right. Dhritarashtra only listened to such persons as Shakuni and Karna, who had very crooked minds.

So Akrura decided to stay a few days in Hastinapura to understand what was going on in the royal household.

The sons of Pandu and their mother, Kunti, were in the care of Dhritarashtra. But Kunti feared for her sons.
