Mateus, a fifteen-year-old, high school sophomore was walking his usual route back home, happier than he'd ever been in his life. His eyes were glued to the screen of his PZP as he fervently pressed the portable console's buttons as fast as his dexterity allowed.
Mateus was a special kind of gamer enthusiast — the extra special kind that actually enjoyed idle, incremental, and clicker games — and the fruits of nearly a year's worth of effort would come to fruition today. For he was on pace to finally complete his favorite game since its release and get the last of his hero's party to the level cap of the game, Level 99,999,999, and have a chance at defeating the game's final uber-secret superboss.
"Fucking finally," Mateus muttered as he looked at his hero's party, comprised of three Level 99,999,999 characters. Each had their own set of transcendental divine equipment, comprising a weapon and three accessories that each had been painstakingly leveled to their own caps of Level 999.
Mateus closed the world around him off from his senses as he directed his characters to their final battle, fatally unaware that he was about to walk through an intersection.
He began the battle and felt a smile creep into his face as his main character began the battle by dealing the maximum amount of damage possible in the game and watched a satisfying "999B" manifest over the boss' name; promptly cutting its health bar in half.
His party's "mage," which might as well have been a god as far as the game world was concerned, then used a forbidden spell that did over five-hundred billion damage, brining the boss' health down to less than a quarter of its starting value.
"Hahaha," Mateus laughed psychotically to himself as he was less than ten command prompts away from finally finishing the game. This far into the end game, it was either his party one-shot the final boss, or it annihilate them during its turn. Alas, before Mateus could end the final battle...
Disaster struck... In the form of a break-screeching truck.
Mateus was sent flying before he could press the final button that would direct his party's assassin to end the battle. After he landed, to his dismay, he found that his fingers could no longer move.
He clenched his portable console instinctively when he was struck. So, when he landed and rapidly felt his life escaping his body, knowing he would probably shortly die, he felt a terrible regret as he couldn't will his fingers to finish his life's purpose; to beat his favorite — current... — game before dying.
Ironically, despite the loss of connection to his fingers, Mateus felt he could move his arm, if only until he lost consciousness. Manic and depressed as he felt his eyelids start growing heavy and his body turn cold, Mateus internally cursed the person responsible for his impending death.
'Motherfucker...' Mateus committed one final spiteful act before losing consciousness. He moved the arm and hand still carrying his PZP to one of his pant's pocket and thought, 'Even if it was my fault for not paying attention… It's my dying wish that the courts will bury you, you fucking—'
He died.
…
In another world, at the exact moment Mateus died on Earth, another Mateus awoke.
"Now then, to begin your assessment, we will begin by testing your Affinity," A voice boomed from all directions as Mateus struggled to quell the terrible migraine inflicting him at the moment.
Mateus was disoriented, overwhelmed, and confused all at once. It didn't help his case when the seemingly omnipresent voice continued, "Now, as you know, our Sect signature Cultivation Method centers around Water, so those with greater talent for Water will be prioritized in the selection process. Secondary prioritization will go to those with talent for Greater Elements, Phenom Elements, and Lesser Elements other than Water in that order."
"In any case," by this point, Mateus' headache had soothed considerably, "to conduct this assessment you are being presented with different consumable energy crystals. Integrate with them to galvanize your Dantians and subsequently place your hand on your room's appraising crystal. Every significant appraisal will be recorded for our Sect Elders to look over in the near future, but to qualify for entry, you need only produce a single Mediocre or greater rating."
"You have ten minutes. Begin," the voice concluded.
"What the actual fuck?!" Mateus grumbled as he took a knee after an attempt at gathering his thoughts. His attempt resulted in his body's previous host's memories merging with his and resuming his headache.
Five minutes later, Mateus was left panting, lying on the floor without any energy, but at least now he had some answers. To summarize, he thought, 'So I died, transmigrated into this dude's body, and we have the same name, but apparently no surname. I'm also no longer on Earth. This place is some sort of weeb fantasy land with fucking magic and shit. And this "other Mateus" just so happened to be about to take his test to enter some sort of magic guild or something.'
"Fuck!" Mateus picked himself off the ground as he felt his body recover and began walking over to the other side of the room.
'It's just my luck that these magical fucks are the "ruthless murder" types and not the "friendship will give you strength" types,' He thought as he looked at the array of crystals carefully laid out in the room's sole table for him to make use of. 'There's no telling what these crazy fucks will do if I make a mockery of their test. So, I better at least try to do something...'
However, despite his resolve, the question arose: What was he to do with the crystals to consume them? Eat them?
'Surely not,' Mateus banished the thought of eating the sharply-cut finger-sized gems as he picked one up.
[Consume?]
"What?" The prompt came from nowhere. No sound, no text, and yet Matues still perceived it.

"Huh? What do you mean 200 Energy will be recovered? A fraction of that will be permanently increased? What am I, some sort of RPG protagonist?" Mateus scoffed.

"Bruh..."
Bruh indeed...
I've returned from my writting hiatus, people who still might remember me. It is just as you think, I've come back for the "monies."
*Sigh*
Coronavirus is really fucking up my life and left me without a job.
So, since I'm not working anyways, why not return and try to make a living by writting?
Anyways, if anyone cares to know, this story is just a "test" of sorts. I want to see how far I can make it into a writting competition.
However, my number one priority at the moment is revising/rewritting my other original story. So, don't expect rapid fire releases.
Honestly, I'm expecting little support, so writting this will probably ending up being a proof of concept thing; at least until I finish revising and completing my other series, or, of course, if the support is overwhelming.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy~
