Chapter 5: Chapter 5 Unexpected encounter

Bruce's first meeting with his creator went disastrously. It all started with Carlisle informing him about their relocation. While Carlisle said they were moving because they had already been in Rochester for a few years, Bruce suspected Rosalie's murderous rampage was the real reason to move. Before they moved, Carlisle thought it was a good idea for Bruce to get acquainted with Rosalie, who had yet to meet him.

"For the fifth time, I did not know that guy. It was just a job," Bruce said as he avoided a fist aimed at his face. In response to his words, a feral growl came.

"I would have waited a few more months if we weren't moving," Carlisle said, rubbing his eyebrows. Esme moved to calm Rosalie while Edward watched in amusement.

"Okay, enough, both of you. Bruce has explained his situation, and you need to let it go and move forward," Carlisle said to Rosalie.

"I don't need your advice, Doctor Cullen. You are not my father," Rosalie said before storming off.

"Don't worry, I will talk to her," Esme said, placing her hand on Carlisle's shoulder. Carlisle looked like he had aged a few years, even though it was not possible.

"Let's talk about moving plans," Carlisle said, changing the topic. "We are planning to move to Mississippi. I hope it's not an inconvenience to you, Bruce."

"Not a problem. It's not like I could go around here with this whole mess," Bruce replied. An awkward silence spread with Bruce's reply before Carlisle continued.

"Well, we already bought a place. There is a forest nearby, so no need to worry about hunting. We are planning to move tomorrow. Esme, Rosalie, and I will take the car, while you and Edward will have to go on foot the night after tomorrow."

"Won't someone notice if we just ran?" Bruce asked.

"Don't worry. It's nighttime, and Edward knows the route to avoid people," Carlisle answered.

"Now that that's out of the way, tell me, Bruce dear, what kind of decorations would you like for your room?" Esme asked. Anyone could tell she was very enthusiastic about designing their new dwelling. Yet an uncontrollable grin appeared on Bruce's face as he was about to answer her.

"Coffin."

"No coffin," Esme said in a chilly tone.

"Aww man, at least put some bats."

As planned, the Cullens moved to their new home, leaving the reincarnator and the mind reader behind. With the sun setting and darkness spreading, Edward called to his companion.

"Time to move."

"Hey, what's going to happen to this place?" Bruce asked curiously, looking at the former Cullen residence.

"Normally, we would sell it. But Carlisle plans to hold it for a while. Now, follow me closely and don't get lost."

"You're the boss."

Edward did not reply to Bruce. Instead, he checked the locks of their residence, even though there was nothing worth stealing—at least not to vampires like them. After that, he signaled to Bruce and started to speed away. Bruce, without wasting a second, ran after him at a speed nearly invisible to human eyes.

Buildings, houses, and roads passed in an instant as Bruce marveled at the capabilities of a vampire. This was the first time he was using his superhuman abilities for a long period, which made him think about the most bizarre aspects of a vampire—the unlimited stamina, or rather, the ability to never tire. Even though they were running at a moderate speed, he should have felt some exhaustion, yet he felt nothing of that sort.

Bruce may not have been a biologist, but he was sure the amount of blood he consumed a few days ago was nowhere near enough to sustain him for prolonged activities like traveling hundreds of miles. It was almost as if his body was self-sustaining, an intriguing fact he made a mental note to look into later.

Breaking his chain of thoughts, a sweet smell assaulted his nose. It was far sweeter than any smell he had encountered before, akin to the scent of animal blood but far richer and tastier. Bruce could tell.

"Blood," Bruce whispered. Breaking away from the trajectory he was following, Bruce ran after the scent with a hint of vampiric madness. At this moment, his speed surged, making his former pace look like a snail's crawl. Edward, also smelling the sweet scent, looked back, hoping Bruce was still following him. But his hope shattered as he watched Bruce running towards the nearby city.

"Damn it," Edward cursed under his breath, changing his path to try and catch up with the newborn.

Leaving Edward behind, Bruce entered the city. As he got closer to the source of the blood scent, he picked up another scent—a scent very familiar because his own was similar, the scent of a vampire. At that moment, along with his hunting instinct awakened at maximum, the vampiric scent started to stir something deep within Bruce.

Following the scent, Bruce entered a dark alleyway. Without darkness obscuring his vision, Bruce saw two figures—a man and a woman. The man was holding the woman from behind, sinking his teeth deep into the base of her neck, while her neck was bent to the side in an unnatural way. Neither of them had a heartbeat, signaling what they were, a vampire and its prey.

The vampire looked at Bruce with a scowl, obviously angered by the interruption to his feeding time. As his menacingly red eyes glanced at Bruce, the vampire recognized his interrupter as one of his kind.

"Go away, fucker. This is my territory," the vampire growled. But seeing that Bruce had no intention of moving, he dropped the woman's body to the ground. With an animalistic roar, he pounced at Bruce like a bullet. While Bruce had yet to fight a vampire, he had been in fights. Seeing this unknown vampire moving towards him, Bruce's instincts kicked in. He sidestepped, avoiding the attacker, and followed with a punch. Bruce's attacker was thrown into a nearby wall by the sheer might of the punch. Yet Bruce was not done. Grabbing his opponent by the neck, Bruce pushed the vampire against the wall. If a human were to observe this, they would only see two blurs intertwined as this whole interaction took only a second.

Cobweb-like cracks spread on the wall as Bruce applied more and more force with his fingers. A cracking sound followed as the diamond-like skin of the vampire broke. The stirring feeling he had felt earlier became overwhelming as Bruce felt the very essence of the vampire being drawn to him. Black lines that looked like veins started to spread from the vampire's neck to Bruce's hand. Bruce felt a fog that had covered part of his existence lifting as he gained an instinctual understanding of what was happening. He was draining venom from the vampire in his captivity. He was commanding the venom to come out from the vampire and become his own.

"What the..." Edward muttered. Of all scenarios, he did not imagine what was happening in front of him. Hearing the whisper, Bruce looked at the newly arrived Edward.

"Ed-" Bruce did not get to complete his words as the vampire in his captivity took advantage of Bruce's distraction. Bruce stepped back, letting go of the vampire and narrowly avoiding a claw-like attack aimed at his eyes. The vampire did not wait for Bruce to gather his wits and started to flee at inhuman speed. Normally, he would fight, but his instinct screamed with fear as he felt the danger his attacker possessed, not to mention he suddenly started to feel weak.

Bruce was about to pursue the vampire when he heard Edward's words.

"Stop. Tell me what happened."

Although a bit reluctant, Bruce gave up the idea of the chase as he calmed down. He then briefly explained what had happened. Listening to his words, Edward said, "You were lucky. Others of our kind don't take kindly if you interrupt their feeding. You could have gotten killed." Edward said, yet his eyes darted to the woman's body. Red blood kept oozing from her neck. Bruce had to admit it was quite inviting, but after the encounter with the unknown vampire, his bloodlust had diminished. On the other hand, Bruce noticed Edward holding his breath and looking at the blood in a trance.

"Oi, Edward," Bruce called, breaking Edward's enthralled state. Regaining his composure, Edward was surprised by Bruce's actions. He expected a blood frenzy when he saw Bruce following the scent of blood, but now he didn't even have a thought of drinking blood.

"Doesn't this affect you?" Edward asked curiously. Even Bruce himself did not know the exact answer. He became crazy for blood like any other vampire, yet if he wanted to, he could stop himself and take control over his thirst. Even at the beginning, he did not follow the scent with feeding in his mind, rather, it was his curiosity and provoked hunting instinct that led him.

"No, but we should get out of here first," Bruce said.

"Let's go. If that guy has a coven, it's going to be troublesome."

After that, their journey went without a hitch. Bruce and Edward became more vigilant to make sure there were no pursuers as they made their way to the new Cullen residence. Bruce did not know whether his actions would lead to conflict with another coven or something bigger, but he did know exactly what his ability was:

 'Venom control.'

Trivia:

Many vampires will break their prey's neck before or after consuming blood to avoid unnecessary vampire reproduction.
