"No, Mum, it's really fine," Charrisa said, forcing a smile to reassure her mother. "I think he's a nice guy, and besides, I'm not getting any younger." She tried to sound convincing, but her voice trembled slightly.

Her mother's expression turned skeptical. "Are you sure, my love?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.

Charrisa nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Mum, please promise me something," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "After I get married, promise me you'll divorce Dad. I can't bear the thought of you staying with him any longer."

Her mother's face softened, and she reached out to embrace Charrisa. "Oh, my dear, I promise. I'll do it for you, for us. We'll start a new life, free from his cruelty and control."
