When Harry, Loki and Lisa sat at the the Ravenclaw table for the opening feast they could not help but notice a lot of people staring at them, like ninety percent of the hall.
"Why is everyone looking at us?" Harry frowned as he looked around and saw people looking at him with disbelief.
"Well..." Terry Boot spoke up. "...according to the rumor mill you fought off the dementors on the train with wandless magic."
"Is it true?" A nearby fifth year asked.
"Well...I didn't use a wand so I suppose so." Harry nodded after a short pause. "But I really didn't do much."
"Yes you did!" A second year exclaimed. "I saw you! You were flicking your wrists and sending little explosions at them!" He said in an awed voice.
"Well...yes...but I wasn't the one to drive them off, that was that new teacher with the mustache." Harry pointed out, for what little good it did him as nearly every person in the hall began whispering about him.
"Your fan club is growing." Lisa said in an amused voice.
"That probably means the amount of fangirls I have has probably just increased," Harry pointed out, wiping away her amusement. "some girls might be willing to try something."
"Not if they don't want their brains hexed out of their ears." Lisa mumbled to herself.
"Attention, attention students!" Dumbledore called out as he stood in front of the hall. "Do forgive me for taking a bit more of your time before we enjoy our splendid feast, but I do have several important announcements to make." The students all listened as Dumbledore made his usual announcements that he made every year, but then near the end of his announcements he suddenly turned much more serious. "As you have all likely heard, Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban," Dumbledore said, all of the hall became quiet, nobody was willing to miss a word of what the headmaster was saying. "due to his recent prison escape the Ministry has seen fit to post Dementors around the school in an attempt to not only locate but also catch Sirius Black. I know that many of you will at times be leaving the castle this year for various reasons such as Hogsmeade trips, I urge those that do to be cautious whenever you leave the castle. The Dementor's influence can affect people to varying degrees, some more than others. Dementor's do not care for excuses and reasons, nor are they something that can easily be hid from. Charms, invisibility cloaks, they will all fail to hide you from them. I assure you that they will not be able to enter the castle, if anyone sees anything suspicious then do not hesitate to inform the Hogwarts staff." Dumbledore paused, making sure that everyone had been listening, he then suddenly shifted back to his usual smiling grandfather look. "And now, everyone tuck in and enjoy the delicious feast." He smiled.
"Well...that was interesting." Harry shrugged before going back to eating.
.
.
"So Harry," Lisa said the next morning when the two plus Loki were sat at the Ravenclaw table for breakfast, they were very early thanks to both having woken up before most people because yesterday they went to sleep early and quickly to avoid the questions from the rest of Harry's housemates. "am I going to get a straight answer on the explosive card trick you did?" She asked.
"I seem to recall talking to Professor Flitwick yesterday and saying 'a magician can't reveal all of his tricks, that goes double for wizards'." Harry replied after taking a sip of some juice. Loki was sat on the table next to Harry and happily eating his breakfast.
"Yes, that is true, but you have forgot one very important thing." Lisa replied with a happy smile.
"Oh? And what would that be?" Harry raised an eyebrow.
"Girlfriend tax." Lisa smirked.
"Is that even a real thing?" Harry asked, half-serious.
"Of course it's a real thing." Lisa said, sounding offended and unable to believe that Harry would doubt the possibility of the 'girlfriend tax' being real. Harry frowned and then looked at Loki with a questioning look, Loki paused while eating breakfast and looked at Harry, Loki gave Harry a short nod and then went back to eating. Harry, now being completely and utterly convinced beyond all doubt that the 'girlfriend tax' was real, turned back to Lisa.
"And what exactly is a girlfriend tax?" Harry asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Quite simply it is a tax the boyfriend pays to make up for all of the stuff that the girlfriend has to suffer through because of them, the usual payment is food. But in this case I am going to ask for payment in the form of knowing how you did the card trick."
"And I absolutely 'must' pay this tax?" Harry asked.
"I would advise doing so," Lisa replied. "might not be healthy for your health if you don't." She added in a quiet yet amused voice. Harry frowned and then looked at Loki with a questioning look, Loki paused while eating his breakfast and looked at Harry, Loki gave Harry a short nod and then went back to eating. Harry, now being completely and utterly terrified of his girlfriend turned back to Lisa.
"Alright," He sighed before taking a quick look around to make sure nobody near him could hear. "it's actually rather simple. I touch something and push enough energy into it to make it explode, then...it explodes."
"That's it?" Lisa asked with a frown.
"That's it," Harry confirmed. "I mean I get that you might have been expecting some really advanced explanation but in simple terms all I really do is push my magic into something and make it explode."
"Can you do it with anything?" Lisa asked curiously.
"Pretty much anything," Harry nodded. "though the bigger something is the more time I need to charge it up. For example a card took me about one or two seconds before I practiced and got it down to less than a second, something else like a table or chair for example, would probably take anywhere between two to seven seconds depending on size and what wood it is made of." Harry added.
"How long have you been able to do that?" Lisa asked.
"Nearly as long as I can remember." Harry shrugged.
A short while later Lisa, Harry and Loki found themselves in the first class of the day, Arithmancy. The two looked around and saw that there was a fair mix of different students from different houses, many had opted not to chose Arithmancy as it was widely known as one of the tougher Hogwarts classes. A minute or so later the Arithmancy teacher arrived, a woman who looked like she was either in her late twenties or at her early thirties, she blonde hair and blue eyes. She looked stern, not quite the same level of stern as Professor McGonagall or Snape, but still stern.
"Hello everyone," She said. "welcome to third year Arithmancy. For those who don't know, I am Professor Septima Vector. Arithmancy, as you all probably know, is a subject that heavily involves numbers. For a basic example, you may carefully write out a mathematical equation, solve it then apply the result to a certain spell to increase the power or even change the affect. This subject is one that can even be used to predict the future, not like divination, this is predicting the future with numbers. There are certain jobs that require you to take this subject, for example you cannot become a curse breaker with out passing the O.W.L exam for this subject."
"O.W.L exam?" One Hufflepuff student asked.
"Ordinary Wizarding Examinations, exams you will take when you are all fifth years, you do not have to worry about them now." Professor Vector explained. "Though with that being said it will not harm you to try your best in this class now to improve your chances later." She said with a brief smile. "I want you all to remember that this is a very challenging class, do not fail to ask me a question if you are unsure, because a single error in your work can cause a lot of damage. That also means there is no monkeying around in this class, is that understood?" She raised an eyebrow at Harry and Loki who was on Harry's shoulder.
Upon realizing that the question was directed at him, Loki sat straight and saluted her before nodding. A few members of the class, including Lisa, giggled at that. Professor Vector, allowed herself a small smile before she continued on with the lesson. She walked around the classroom, handing out papers with several equations, the first few equations were fairly simple ones while the equations near the end of the paper were much more complicated.
Lisa quickly got to work, the first few equations were easy but they started to get fairly more challenging as she continued. She was roughly about half way through the paper when she looked at Harry, Loki was sat on his shoulder and playing with Harry's hair while Harry had suddenly placed his paper down and leaned back with a relaxed grin. Lisa checked to see that the Professor was on the other side of the classroom, so she quickly whispered to Harry.
"How are you already done?" Lisa whispered.
"I used this." Harry whispered back as he pulled out a solar powered calculator.
"A calculator?" Lisa whispered, surprised that it worked. "Can I borrow it?" She asked.
"Sure." Harry said as he handed it over to her.
"Professor." A voice spoke from behind the two, they both glanced back and saw Hermione Granger sitting behind them and raising her hand.
"Yes Miss Granger?" Professor Vector asked as she walked over.
"They're cheating." Hermione said as she gestured to Harry and Lisa, the former looking confused while Lisa was gaping at her.
"And how are they doing that?" Professor Vector frowned.
"They're using a calculator." Hermione answered.
"A calculator?" Professor Vector looked at Lisa and saw that she was holding a calculator. "How have you got it to work? It shouldn't be working in Hogwarts?" She frowned, being a half-blood she knew what a calculator was, but she was still confused as to how it worked. It was well known that all the high amounts of magic in Hogwarts interfere with electric devices, even if the calculator was solar powered it should still not work.
"Oh this summer I found an old book that my Mother had left," Harry began explaining. "she was doing some work on runes and was trying to make it so that electronic devices could work in Hogwarts. I was looking at her notes and tried it on a calculator and it works. I'm going to try it on other things in the future and if it works consistently then I'm going to try and see if I can make some money out of it."
"Hmm," Professor Vector gave him a short nod. "very well, is there any chance that you can make something like this for me?" She asked hopefully.
"Not now," Harry shook his head. "like I said it still needs to be tested and I want to get all the rights to it, so I can make money from it."
"Very well," Professor Vector sighed, she was disappointed but she understood. In the past many people had just revealed the runes that they created and everyone ended up using them without that person benefiting from it. "Professor Babbling, the runes Professor, will love you, I'm sure of it. Take ten points to Ravenclaw."
"But Professor, we're supposed to do these by hand without help." Hermione protested.
"When did I say that?" Professor Vector raised an eyebrow. "Miss Granger, I specifically remember saying 'a single error in your work can cause a lot of damage', if Mr Potter and Miss Swan are using a working method that reduces the possibility of errors and mistakes then they have my full permission to do so." Professor Vector gave a nod to Harry and Lisa before walking towards the front.
"Hey Granger," Harry looked back and whispered to Hermione, who frowned but leaned in to hear him. "you can't borrow my calculator." He said before he turned back.
