Chapter 6— I have to choose a class?

Cyrus looks at me calmly from across the table. Outside the sunlight begins to dawn on the horizon even though it is still early. However, no noise can be heard in the building.

"You have to choose a class that comes to your mind, it's a class that you will learn to master until you decide your level is sufficient. Of course, you can train there longer if you want. The evolution in each class has no limit except for what you decide. You can also choose other classes if you wish, it's allowed. Your choice of class is important so you should not choose lightly. Most of the time, people choose to train in multiple classes before attempting the first world, that's why I'm telling you this. You need to find at least one class that you like and that will allow you to pass the world-floors of the tower. "

He then takes the same book out of his jacket that he gave me and opens it to a page with a list of the different classes. Names are grouped by category and fighting style. They are extremely varied and there is for example the class of inquisitor among priests. Or that of a gunner or slaver among the pirates tower.

The classes among the druids gather mainly around nature and there is for example the alchemist class or that of Shaman, but also of Summoner. Bards are the strangest since there are all types of entertainment possible in the classes, artist, acrobat, storyteller, mermaid, gladiator or even classes related to musical instruments.

The list is long and as I turn the pages I realize that there are more than five pages which are dedicated solely to listing the names of each class. Cyrus, who seems to be looking at me with interest, then begins to speak again.

—The simplest choices give you a base to start on and which will serve you whatever class you settle on later. For example, the gladiator class is considered a warrior family class even though it is taught at the tower of the bards. Whatever your choice, it will serve you and allow you to be more versatile.

—Isn't there an easier way to choose?

Honestly, with the amount of information I have to learn, I have no idea which class is better than the other and so on. There are specialized classes and more general classes and I have no way of knowing which one will be more useful to me. If my life depends on it, I would at least like to be sure that I don't make the wrong choice or spend my time changing classes just because I'm undecided. I'm not really in a state to think about this so if I could have a hand…

It is then that Cyrus who seems to be happy starts to gesture with his arms in front of me without saying anything, as if he were performing a silent ritual. He ends up reaching out in my direction, closing his eyes before saying, "Eye of revelation"! Suddenly, a card appears in his hand and he hands it to me. Above is written the word "Tamer."

—Impressive, isn't it? I intend to use it at the next evening to impress the other guides. Ahem, in short… The profession on the card is the one that suits you the most according to your natural affinities. We rarely get it wrong so I suggest you try. If you don't like it, you can always learn things before moving on to another class.

—I imagine…

Tamer ? Me? I have never had a pet and would like to understand why this is supposed to correspond to me? A slightly more offensive class might be more appropriate if I have to fight in the tower.

—What does a Tamer do?

—Hmm, this is a class from the ranger tower and one of the top three along with Ranger and Guide. The last one is a class, my job is different so you know. But it has gradually lost more and more popularity over the years. I can't tell you why, you have to go there and ask.

—So it's a bad class?

—Not really since it's a main class… The best is to see for yourself, it's the class that is best for you after all. Don't be negative. Afterall, although I am also your guide, I am not a teacher and I do not live in the secondary towers so I cannot tell you what is going on there in detail. Emy can accompany you there this afternoon if you wish it is more or less on her way. I'll ask her when she's awake. She's one of the oldest residents still around and she should be able to take you without a hitch.

—I really have the right to choose other classes without any penalty?

—No, there is no penalty. Well, for some classes of magicians, there may be a conflict between magics. For example between a magician of fire and water, the mix hardly works without a certain level of control. Of course, there can be some unsuspected problems between the classes, but also some interesting synergies. The only real problem… is for the tower of the Bards who refuse anyone who already has a class from another tower. There are only people without a class or who already have a class from this tower who can choose classes there.

The bards tower… I must say that I never had a musical streak so it's not problematic. From what I see in the book most of the classes are art oriented and I don't see a problem with not having access to it.

—Hmm, I guess I'll think about that and see what the Tamer class is about.

—Very well in that case, I'll leave the book to you. You will find answers there. If I ever feel like you need help, I'll come see you.

Cyrus gets up and after a wave of his hand he leaves the manor, wishing me good luck. I find myself alone again in front of my plate which I have not yet touched. Fried eggs and beans, it has been a while since I had lunch like this. I take the book and start to eat while leafing through it. The first few pages mention that everyone speaks the same language here to facilitate coordination. That the people of the tower are there to help the adventurers and keep them safe in this area. The Guide of each person keep this role indefinitely and must help all the climbers assigned to him as best as possible, he is here to provide accommodation, food and resources to the best of his ability.

Each adventurer is endowed with a sum of 100 gold coins from the start allowing him to make purchases at his leisure. The currency system is supposed to be accepted by the different worlds, but it is possible to exchange the currencies brought from the worlds to the bank of the tower. To put it simply, 100 copper coins are equal to one silver coin and 100 silver coins equal to one gold coin. The system is easy to remember like that.

Then there is an explanation of the guild system that exists as well as that of the bank and the marketplace. The Guild Office is inside the main tower and a sum of money is required to create one.

Some materials can be exchanged in the market or the bank for money, and the bank can keep money or materials for adventurers. Equipment can be purchased inside the towers directly, but since it is the adventurers who provide the high-level equipment found inside the world on each floor, the market is not very stable except for basic equipment available in the secondary towers. This is why it is recommended from a certain level to go and get your equipment in the floors directly to find good equipment or to call on craftsmen classes.

Then there is the passage from the book about the classes and the different buildings available near the side towers, but I have the impression I hear Cyrus while reading all this. There are a few caveats about certain places where theft is allowed if not noticed to create an experience for thieves near the Thieves Tower, but apart from the map and the class list, I don't see too many things that interest me. All of that is a bit of déjà vu for a video game player right now. Of course, while reading diagonally after a while, I ended up stumbling upon something interesting.

"Status"

Suddenly in front of me is a character sheet and an inventory. I have no class or level and no skills either from what I can read. There is no health bar, but there is a ridiculously small mana bar under my name "Nomad." Anyway, I can see 100 gold in the bottom right and if I look at the other information, I can see I'm 20 years old. Hmm, this is very useful.

I close the inventory by passing my hand through it and I sigh before returning to the book which has only a few more pages to offer me.

"Hey, did you like the meal?"
