Chapter 22—Stiletto

Emy and I move into the stands after I decide to forfeit.

—Well, from what I saw, you do well with short blades. Maybe you should specialize in this to begin with. The way you fight, you need to stay mobile and light. You are agile enough and for someone who is just starting out, you have good sequences.

—I noticed, but I'm afraid the daggers are not sufficiently offensive.

—Depends on the weapon. There are different types of small arms like bayonets, daggers, and thrusting weapons. It depends on how you fight. After just one workout, it might be hard to tell, but I recommend buying several types to see. With the inventory you can keep several on you. Even though it's hard to change in the middle of a fight, it's always better to have options.

Emy keeps telling me about different types of weapons that I can imagine quite well and we end up deciding to go to a weapons store in the Warriors Tower to wrap up the topic. We return to the large main hall where a large brazier in the center burns continuously and illuminates the entire hall of the warriors' tower.

We walk into a store and Emy asks a salesperson to show us some small bladed weapons. She then decides to let me see that she has to return to train by telling me that I will see her tonight with a little luck.

The seller and I walk through the shelves covered with weapons of all types, halberds, rapiers, bows and arrows, crossbows, etc.

We end up arriving in the radius in question which is rather small. The seller explains to me that the choice will be more interesting at the thieves' tower. I still look at the different weapons and put my eyes on some stilettos that look interesting. The weapon seems light and made to attack thrust. She looks perfect for piercing armor.

My current dagger is rather conventional on the side, it is made for all types of uses. For combat, of course, but also as a basic knife. Its blade is 20 centimeters and it is already a lot, the blade resembles that of a short sword in its regularity. This is the most basic weapon I could have bought and I realize now that I see the various choices in front of me. The stiletto next to it speaks to me a lot more.

Its blade is fine and shrinks slightly to a few centimeters near the tip. She does not seem made to attack by slicing anyway.

The weapon itself is about 45 centimeters, if you remove the guard it is only three or four centimeters wide for the hilt and two or three for the blade. The blade is about a foot or so, and I would probably have hit Emy if I had had it earlier in training. Both sides of the rifle's hilt are pointed and also seem to be made to pierce in addition to being able to protect the hand. The handle is made of metal and has been worked to be rough so that the hand does not slip without having a chance to cut it, which changes a bit of the leather that is usually found.

By taking it in hand, I realize that it is a little heavier than it seems and it is probably so that the blade cannot break on an armor. It's not that embarrassing anyway.

As for use, I'm clearly going to need to practice with it before I can use it properly. Not to mention that it is a rather special weapon since it is made to pierce, not to cut. The goal is not to hurt, but to kill quickly by touching the organs. It's pretty hard to picture myself actually using it and I'd rather not think about it. By sharpening the blade properly, I could probably use it for slicing, but it's really not for that, so I'll put that idea aside for now.

I like the weapon and I decide to tell the seller, telling him that I will take three.

He asks me if I want normal or leather scabbards so I can attach them to my harness. I thought about it for a few moments and ended up asking him for two leather bags that could fit under my wallet on my back. That I can easily grab them from either side with my hands. He asks me to remove the harness and takes the opportunity to find out if I want other modifications. By giving him my harness, I tell him it won't be necessary. Micha on his side settles on my shoulder, a little unhappy to have to leave his leather pocket. I pat her head quickly and decide to sit on a bench while the salesperson gets down to the changes.

Okay, I think it's clear now. Considering my fighting style, I think I'll find myself in a class in the Thieves Tower. That was what I've been thinking about since yesterday. My duel with the girl who stole my necklace had already encouraged me to take this path. I take out of my inventory the intro book to the tower which details the classes and quickly go around them to see what is in the thieves tower that might interest me. The three main classes are thief, bandit and charlatan.

There are, of course, other classes like poisoner, assassin, burglar, rogue, thug and others, a little different like spy and investigator or even chameleon. Most of them focus on illegal activities that are not reassuring. While I think about it, the salesperson comes back with my harness and I put it on right away.

—How much for the whole?

- Thirty-five silver coins for each stiletto and the harness modification will be 20 silver coins. A total of one gold coin and twenty-five silvers.

I quickly pay for everything and put the blades directly into the leather scabbards to see the result. They are accessible and easy to unsheathe, which suits me perfectly. Not to mention the fact that they don't fall off when I lean to the side, and they don't get in my way either. In short, it is perfect. I put the third weapon in my inventory and I leave the tower with Micha again installed in his leather pocket. The link hasn't bothered me at all for some time now. I feel like I got used to Micha's movements. I'm still not sure if I would take the pain if she gets hurt, but I imagine Fae will train me for it. I walk out of the Warriors Tower thinking of Cyrus and hoping he will be there and after a few moments he naturally appears in the crowd, walking in my direction as if he heard my call.

—You look more and more like a real climber, you know. You wanted to see me?

—I'm going to go to the Ranger Tower and I have a few questions about the Thieves Tower.

—Ah. Do you finally think about choosing a class from this tower? Did Emy tell you about it or..?

—No, she didn't tell me anything clearly, but after our training that's what came out. I don't do too badly with small blades and wanted to know the difference between a thief and an assassin.

—Oh. In short, one steal and the other kills.

—…. And to make it shorter?

—As for the thief, the class is based on stealth and cunning. So there are a lot of skills to build stealth, speed and offensive ability in order. The assassin is a less general class than that of the thief which is based in order on speed, offensive capacity and stealth. The two look alike and are just a matter of preference over these three features and their uses.

—Hm…

—Do you plan to take one of the two classes?

—I think yes. If I believe my way of fighting and my vision of the Tamer class, it's the best.

Cyrus remains silent and does not wish to add anything more on the rest of the path that leads to the ranger tower. I leave him outside and decide to go do my first survivalist lesson.

If I have time, then I'll go see Fae.
