Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Changes are Coming

Alex shuts the door behind them. Both Kara and Sam meet her in the kitchen. Sam walks back and forth between the pantry and the fridge to gather the things she needs to make some soup to bat off the unfortunate weather.
Kara plops on the stool and sighs.
Alex looks at her, "So Sam filled you in or did you listen?"
Kara takes a grape from the fruit bowl. "She filled me in, I heard Lucy say it was ok to hear but it still felt wrong listening like that."
Alex takes an apple from the same bowl. "When I see James, I'm gonna kill him. He does not deserve that damn guardian shield. It's bull shit that he can prance around in that armour and act all high and mighty."
Kara gets up to get two glasses of water, "It's hard for me to agree with that point because he should get the chance too, like Sam and I. But he does more harm than good and he is failing to see that. When I thought I was the reason aliens were centralised here, I was more than ready to give it up. He enjoys fame too much."
"Oh come on, you and Sam are nowhere near the same as James. He's an ass hat with no fucking integrity and I'm this close to reporting this shit head to the authorities. Maggie could literally perp walk him in the station by the end of the damn week." Alex grumbles under her breath.
Sam looks at her pointedly. "I'm not a fan of so many curse words in one sentence Alex, tone it down. Pass me another onion please."
Alex does as she is told. She closes her eyes as she sits back down. She composes herself after a couple of moments. "Sorry Sammy."
Sam just nods her head and gives her a small smile.
Kara throws away the remnants of the fruits. "I still can't believe he did that, I knew of his aggressive tendencies but to do that to someone you've been with for over a year? I did not see that coming."
Sam puts the stove on low and adds in the potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin bits to simmer. "What I can't wrap my head around is the reaction. I mean, he knew what he was getting himself into with Lucy. She told him." Sam mixes in some light spices and stirs it in. "It's his own fault that he didn't take her seriously, I just wish Lucy had gotten out sooner. So she wouldn't have to deal with all this crap, and him."
"I don't think she wanted to stay but I think she felt like she had to." Kara chimes in, "It could be that Lucy felt there was nothing else out there for her. So she stayed until the bitter end. I think Luce needs us more now. I can't help but wonder if she knew that we were here for her, this wouldn't have happened." Kara sounds bummed, they all feel it.
They know that maybe they could have done something to stop this. But there is no point in dwelling on something that they can't change. They can help her move forward though. And that is exactly what they are going to do.
Alex puts the finished glasses of water into the dishwasher. "I will go to J'onn in the morning and see what can be done." Alex does a three-sixty, "But we have to talk to Lucy about what she wants first though. We can't just go controlling all of this, unless that's what she wants."
Kara nods, "Yea you're right. Rao, he is so disgusting for making her feel like this."
When Kara saw Lucy with James, (specifically wanting her instead of James), that's when she started to question her sexuality. Krypton never had a 'thing' against gender, they only classified themselves by reproductive (or lack thereof) systems. But it was never just two, not like how earth likes to think of gender and sex as one in the same and how intersex and other forms aren't recognized or talked about enough.
But whether people want to acknowledge it or not, earth had just about the same amount of sexes as Krypton did. The ratios were more equal on Kara's dead planet though.
On Krypton, nobody went around talking about what was between their legs, they were just, people.
Since the last daughter of Krypton had to conform to early customs to fit in the proper way, she soon developed a bias while attending public school. She had to constantly hear her fellow classmates talk about how disgusting gay people were and how they were gonna burn in hell.
At the time, Alex was barely making eye contact with her, every morning before they walked into those big double doors, she would whisper, do what the Romans do. So, that's what she did, after learning what the phrase really meant. This led to Kara thinking that since the majority of the school felt this way, maybe it was the right thing to think.
The blonde still till this day silently beats herself up about this, regretting not developing her critical thinking skills faster and not realizing that the hate she sees aliens get on tv, the xenophobia, is the same as homophobia.
All things came to a head when one night Kara used a homophobic slur while recalling her day with Eliza and Jeremiah. The situation was reconciled soon enough though.
After that, the super has made it her mission to spread inclusivity and acceptance - Both as Supergirl and a reporter.
Sam finishes up with cooking, she just leaves the pot to simmer a little longer. Kara finishes her paper on pollution and as soon as she sends the re-edited version to Andrea, a little girl stumbles from their room into the blonde's warm arms.
"Well hello sweetheart." Kara fixes the still sleepy girl to sit comfortably in her lap.
The dark-haired woman mumbles a response.
Kara suppresses a chuckle, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that."
She sits up a bit to rub at her eyes, more awake now, "Why did I wake up cuddled to Lucy?"
"Well, Alex did put a pillow in between you guys to separate you."
Lena looks at Kara in question.
"Sorry about that, Luce had a bad day, and then she really needed a nap. We thought it would be best not to leave her alone so we put her with you, probably should have asked you first, I'm sorry." They were only thinking about Lucy and assuming that Lena would go along with it, it's best to ask both sides though.
Lena snuggles deep into Kara's chest, "No it's ok, I don't mind. I like Lucy. We had a scheduled dinner but all that 084 stuff happened."
Kara nods, "I'm sure she will wanna go back to her place soon, but she will probably stay for dinner.
Kara looks out the window and is grateful the storm is starting to let up. "The storm seems to be getting better, she will probably insist on leaving."
Lena hums in understanding. She doesn't know what happened but for Lucy to crash like that, she knows that it must have really affected her quite a bit.
A couple of minutes go by and Sam shuts off the stove. Kara ushers Lena to go sit on the couch while she wakes up the others.
She goes to Maggie first so she can warn the girl about Lucy's presence in the house. That gets the girl to wake up within a flash. Lucy wakes up just fine and is embarrassed she managed to fall asleep on them and had to be carried to bed.
Kara brushes it off. "It's fine Luce, come, dinner is just about done, we are having soup and salad."
Dinner is a calm affair, idle conversation passes throughout the table and bits of laughter here and there. Lucy doesn't know how she can do such a one-eighty but she no longer regrets leaving James' place. She is happy that she came here and more pleased that they accepted her. What did I expect? These are good people.
Once the dishes are in the sink, Kara takes Lena to have a bath together. Maggie pulled for dish duty, which Sam offered to help her with.
"Thank you for having me Al. It was nice, really nice." Like family nice, something I've never had the opportunity to be a part of in a long time.
The redhead leans in to give the shorter girl a fierce hug, a hug the latter melts into.
"You sure you don't want to stay with us for a while longer?" She grabs Lucy's coat which was fresh from the dryer.
Lucy smiles at her, she zips herself up most of the way and swings a small bag over her shoulder. They said she could keep the clothes they gave her, but she reluctantly accepted. "I'm fine Alex, thanks though. I wanna head home, have a bit of time to myself and think. I know James has enough sense not to be there, and I'm not scared he will hurt me."
Alex eyes her and it makes the major roll her eyes. She takes Alex's hand and looks her in the eyes seriously. "I promise."
Alex nods, knowing that this is a battle she can't win, but she trusts Lucy's skill. Of course she will have James flat on his ass, she's not worried about that. She's worried about the mental battle and damage that Lucy could go through in the fallout.
"Get home safe Luce."
When the door closes, there are three things Alex hears. The first one being two very snotty sneezes coming from the kitchen. Two, the crashing of a ceramic plate on the wooden floor; and three, the giggling of a Luthor playing 'catch me if you can' with a Super, and somehow winning.
"Lena! You're gonna catch a cold if you don't get dry fast enough."
"Nuh, u- Achoo!"
Alex face palms, We are in deep shit.
