Jacob and Althea settled into their seats as Princess Vela continued. "Althea has spoken highly of your abilities, Jacob. She doesn't offer praise lightly, which is why I wanted to meet you in person."
Jacob felt a flicker of unease as the princess continued, "I have a task for you. Something that will allow me to see just how extraordinary you truly are."
His apprehension deepened, wondering what challenge the princess might have in mind.
"A small contingent of our army is being sent west," she explained, her gaze sharpening. "Specifically, to the border shared with the Valtoris Kingdom. The situation there bears some resemblance to what you faced in the Arcjund Valley. Temples desecrated. Villages wiped out without a trace of their inhabitants. The entire region has been shrouded in an unnatural darkness, and despair hangs over it like a curse."
