Chapter 10: Chapter 9
I knew about vampires and their… persuasive ways, hell that's my profession, but still it takes me some time and effort to blink the dizziness away as I leave the shower and quickly dress up before the freezing cold wind can reach me again.
Perhaps there are levels, I try to reason, the most ancient powerful ones may have a stronger bounding power, or perhaps it has something to do with inner talent as vampires have different powers too depending on the lineage they come from, such as mind control, enticing powers, and some powerful ones can even move shadow and blood by will.
But I do not find comfort thinking like that and this line of thought only means that the vampire from before may be a very powerful one and, in the end, what matters is the power his mere presence has on me.
And we barely exchange glances at that for him to be affecting me like this.
Get a grip of yourself Mr. Alex Wood, we are professionals and we are here to do our job no matter what, and it is not the first vampire we encounter that will prove us otherwise.
We are not that weak, we are definitely not that weak.
On the contrary of all expectations we are here, independent, free, while doing what most brushed off as a mere hobby or the work of a fertile mind, a mere passing moment, and we had ourselves doubt that living from our most beloved line of work was a feeble dream too.
But here we are now, maybe not rich and famous as some have become, but well set enough to live our dreams.
So, this vampire will definitely not break our spirit, not after everything we've been through, our second encounter with a supernatural creature would not make us lose focus and back off.
No way at all!
So why the hell I cannot stop looking at him the moment the door opens and reveals his image?!
Not even the golden extravagant halls of such a massive house can take my gaze away from him once he comes into view, from his black long curly hair that cascades like fine silk coiled by the brushing wind, flawless skin resting the most gorgeous physic I've ever seem as his lips pull to the side a little, as if tempting me to touch them, only for my eyes to go up and be capture by his deep gaze and profound eyes, and I could almost see myself been seized by the reflection from his eyes.
I shake my head sideways, no way I'm going to let this strange side effect drift me away from the question that I have done many times before, and that I ask one more time:
"What the hell is going on?" Even my shy self has become a little bold and blunt after waiting for so long in a strange place with strange people in a odd situation, though I might add that I could not sustain my gaze against his eyes and ended up staring at his dark red skull tie, just as extravagant as the black suit he's wearing.
"Well, of course. Where should I begin… well, we may have a small complicated situation with you, you see, blood is a very serious matter we deal with in this city, to the point of categorizing it from the most poisonous ones to the most tasteful ones.
"And you my… friend, so happened to be a very special case of being a very sweet tasting human. Usually your kind has an average taste, almost like an everyday meal that our kin has to have, but some even managed to have a tastier flavor, especially the healthy ones, and yet you… you manage to make a tester lose their mind just with the smell of it." He says, tapping his finger on the arm of the chair he is sitting on.
"And I am sure that I don't have to explain to you just how problematic that is in a city like ours…" He says, a mix of invitation and contained irritation that puzzles me for a bit, but soon my mind goes to the fact that he is implying an interesting yet dangerous fact for myself.
That I somehow managed to be a tasty morsel strolling in front of the predators.
And there is one staring at me right now.
I feel my heart skip a beat but not for the same reasons as before, and as silly as he may it look I start to understand what the taxi driver implied.
That, in this city, humans are no better than cattle, drifting between a piece of juicy meat from a playful childish pet, and honestly I don't know which one is worse, to be seeing as dinner, or to be seen as a mere toy.
And this never blinking vampire is giving me a taste of their never shifting gaze when they are set on their next meal.
"I-I think I'm good to go then, perhaps coming here was a mistake after all." I don't care if others call me a coward, my nerves were already so on the edge that knowing my dangerous predicament rounds a terror inflicted shot of adrenaline right into my heart.
However as I'm about to stand, probably looking as frightened as I am feeling since I've never been good at hiding my feelings, the vampire stands too, maybe by reflex or even to send me off, but him moving the same time as me freezes me in place, and noticing all of that the vampire visually tenses up, but strangely enough tries to smooth things out and says:
"Sorry, I know how that must sound, but you don't have to feel threatened, that's why I'm here after all." At the sound of his words, my well known friend curiosity strikes again, and being enough to make me come all this way to this odd city in the first place it easily makes me stop to look at him once more and listen.
"You see, the…The Vampire Lord himself sent me here to take care of you, I will not only assist you in your job but will help out with whatever you need, so don't be shy now." He says, calming words and all, but I'm still on guard for some reason, almost curling at the intensity of his gaze and… something more.
"Still…That's too much trouble, it's better if I just leave and-"
"Oh no you don't need to be so extreme, you see, the Vampire Lord only wishes that humans and vampires can have a peaceful existence together, and you are the more reason to put a great effort into it, so there are no differences between us whatsoever, even it's such a special case as yourself."
I sit down at the edge of the chair again, especially because the Butler from before comes with breakfast this time around, orange juice with toast, bacon and eggs for me and a black mug for the vampire that he drinks while staring at me intensively.
Just a display of predatory behavior, and yet I could not stop myself from wondering…
"What are those blood categorizations that you talked about?" My clear curiosity brings a genuine smile to his face for the first time, and I have to blink twice before managing to calm myself down.
If we are truly going to spend more time together like this then I'm sure his intense gaze that makes my heart skip a beat will be bad for my health. How can a man be so shockingly stunning? I mean, I wasn't even gay, I actually wasn't even interested in those kinds of things that much, and this is the first time that I have had such a strong reaction to someone, which keeps getting me off guard.
And I bet that's this vampire is more than aware of the effects he has on me.
And I have a feeling that he's playing around as well, for his smile finally reached his eyes as his jawline tenses a bit while he says:
"You can ask me whatever you want, I'm here for you after… but there are conditions." Of course there are, why wouldn't there be? It would have been too good to be true after all, I think while sighing.
I'm dreading to ask, but with another sigh while avoiding his gaze I finally ask:
"… And what are does?"
His smile deepens as he lays further down on his comfy chair, which makes me dread questioning it at all.
But still… is a unique chance to getting information from the source itself, knowing about the creatures that have always fascinated me the most.
Who wouldn't be tempted further down the hole?
So I wait, only to hear him say:
"…You will have to live with me."
…Excuse me?
