It seems that, as much as my nose has got me this far into finding Evelyn, it did jack shit towards making me aware that the vampire, in the end, had not been crazy enough to come alone, nor let the child without protection.

Because when howls filled the air, blood, claws and fur covered my vision as bodies clash into fighting right in front of me.

I hold my breath, all too quickly, all too fast, all too violent for me to cope on the first few seconds, the confusion of bodies, howls of pain from both parties as what had been an empty hill is now filled with supernatural creatures from all over drenching the forest ground with blood, and yet when my mind blinks awake from the turmoil the first thing I do is try to find anyone I can recognize in that mess, try to see if Lucien has managed to get to us.
