Chapter 1: Ch - 1 .... Unexpected call ?

The clock struck midnight, and the world outside my window seemed to hold its breath. The moon hung low, casting elongated shadows across the pavement. I had just settled into bed, the warmth of my blankets cocooning me, when the phone rang. The shrill sound pierced the silence, and I fumbled to answer it.

"Hello?" I said, my voice groggy with sleep.

"Is this Sarah?" The voice on the other end was familiar yet strained. It was my mother, her tone urgent.

"Yes, Mom. What's wrong?" My heart raced as I sat up, suddenly wide awake.

"It's your sister," she whispered. "She's missing."

The words hung in the air, heavy and foreboding. My sister, emily , had always been adventurous, but this was different. She wouldn't just vanish without a trace. I promised my mother I'd be there soon and hung up.

The night air was cool as I stepped out onto the porch. The streetlights flickered, their feeble glow barely illuminating the path. I drove through winding roads, the trees leaning in as if whispering secrets. Thunder rumbled overhead, and raindrops splattered against the windshield. The storm seemed to mirror my inner turmoil.

As I approached our house, I noticed the curtains drawn tightly shut. The darkness within was impenetrable. My mother stood on the porch, her face etched with worry. Her eyes met mine, and I saw fear reflected there. We embraced, two souls clinging to hope.

Inside, the air smelled of candle wax and anticipation. The flickering lights played tricks on my eyes, casting eerie shapes on the walls. I moved through the hallway, my footsteps echoing. The silence was suffocating.

And then, as if scripted by fate, the lights blazed to life. The room erupted in a chorus of voices—my family, gathered in the dimly lit living room. Their faces held a mix of relief and mischief. My sister stood at the center, grinning.

"Surprise!" they shouted in unison.

I blinked, my mind struggling to catch up. The missing sister, the storm, the unease—it had all been an elaborate ruse. Emily had orchestrated this grand charade for my birthday. Tears welled up, a mixture of relief and laughter.

"Happy birthday, Sarah," My mom said, pulling me into a hug. "We wanted to make it unforgettable."

And unforgettable it was—the night when shadows danced, and surprises bloomed like moonflowers. As thunder rolled outside, we sang "Happy Birthday," our voices harmonizing with the storm. The darkness had held secrets, but now it cradled joy.

I had completely forgotten that this day marked my own birthday
