Chapter 12: KAKUGAN.
Yuuma made a stop in front of a gate with security details all around the place armed to the teeth.
"We have arrived at the GhulForschungsGesellschaft or Ghoul Research Association, short for GFG." Yuuma said as he paid a toll gate fee before driving in.
"I used our connection to get a first-class certificate in biochemistry from one of the universities in the capital to be able to request an audience with the person you wanted to meet. Of course, I majored in Chemistry before I was employed by your father, so starting a conversation was easy. Even if I didn't he was interested in hiring quality graduates to help in his research, so I could have gotten in nonetheless." Yuuma said as a matter of fact.
"I mentioned that my sponsor is interested in his work and would like to sponsor him as well. It was at that moment he welcomed the notion of you coming over here to see him." Yuuma continued.
Shuu simply listened and hoped that his plan would work. He knew he wasn't a frightening genius like some people he knew but what he was good at was setting reasonable goals and plans to come together to give a desired result. This meeting was a crucial monument to one of his grand plans for the future. He decided to fully exploit the fact that he kept his memories and decided to set goals and plans in motion for a brighter tomorrow.
Yuuma pulled in front of the door of the research facility. He quickly dusted and cleaned his suit before leaving the car. He was sent flying to a concrete pillar half an hour ago after all. He walked in front of Shuu's door and opened it for the latter.
Shuu came out of the Mercedes gracefully and caught the attention of some female German interns who were shocked to see such a handsome specimen at their facility. Shuu simply smiled and followed Yuuma who led the way inside.
Yuuma was greeted by some men and women in lab coats as they'd previously met and deemed him a bright scholar and a possible addition to their ranks in the facility. Yuuma simply smiled and waved and walked towards an elevator. Shuu and Yuuma entered the elevator but the latter started inputting different numbers and letters as if to put in a password. The lights in the elevator soon turned red and began the descent.
The descent lasted for a while till the elevator parted its doors for the duo to leave. Shuu hid his amazement when he walked in. What he saw before him was the stuff of movies. There were many vats containing what were probably humans and ghouls in them, there was machinery and basic robots running different tasks, and people in lab coats watching experiments and writing down their findings.
"How did you even gain clearance to this place?" Shuu looked at his retainer suspiciously.
"I might be weak for now but I have strength in other areas Shuu-sama" Yuuma replied with a smile as he closed his eyes and shrugged his shoulders.
A thin-looking man with a bob that covered the entirety of his eyes wearing a smile on his face approached Yuuma while waving his hand. He is of average height, has black hair, and clean shaven.
"Ah, young Yuuma! How are you? Is that the sponsor you talked about? He's so young!" The man said energetically as he approached the duo.
"Greetings Doctor Chigyou, as you said earlier, this is indeed my sponsor, Tsukiyama Shuu! The heir to the Tsukiyama family." Yuuma proclaimed proudly.
The doctor had no way of knowing that he was in the presence of ghouls but stretched out his right hand to shake this new face.
"I am Kouitsu Chigyou but please call me Dr. Chigyou." Dr. Chigyou said with a smile as his handshake was well received by Shuu.
"I am Tsukiyama Shuu, it's a pleasure to finally meet y-" Shuu said but was interrupted by the doctor who almost let out a scream because his hand was being crushed by Shuu unknowingly. He had forgotten he was at the peak of the S rank after all!
Shuu seeing this immediately released the pressure on his hand but it only felt awkward to him since he was just trying to give a firm handshake.
"Ugh. Please follow me to my office; we can talk there in private." The doctor said as he massaged his hand while trying to hide his pained expression.
Then Shuu and Mairo followed the doctor to his office in a room that had glass doors that seemed sturdy enough for a place that runs experiments on ghouls.
The doctor gestured for his visitors to seat across him and then sat on a lone chair behind the table making a boundary between himself and his visitors.
"Have you thought about the intricacies of the physiology of a ghoul and its characteristics? All we have here are ghouls below A-rank to experiment on. We simply don't have the funds and manpower to capture rank-A and above ghouls alive for further studies, I was wondering if you-" Doctor Chigyou droned but was interrupted by Shuu.
"I know you have a lot of things you want to talk about and share but there is something I need from you doctor." Shuu raised his hand to stop him.
'Tch, typical. Rich bastards, they are all the same. Instead of understanding the core and finding true purpose behind our cause they just ask for what they want and leave. Hey, why don't you build me a ghoul-detecting radar for my plane, ugh.' The doctor's mood soon turned sour after he was rudely interrupted. He would not tolerate this if he didn't need funding at the moment, actually is there ever a time researchers don't need funding?
"Every living human like you and ghouls like us are born with Rc cells in our body am I right?" Shuu said.
The revelation of him being a ghoul was taken well by the doctor but his promising junior lab attendant, Yuuma was also revealed to be a ghoul shocked him. Yuuma looked at Shuu as if he had lost it, for crying out loud they were in a ghoul research lab, their search for ghouls with A rank or higher could be achieved with a simple push of a button introducing a knockout gas tailored for ghouls.
Shuu was confident that his durability stat could buy him enough time to escape the facility if needed before he passes out if such measures were taken. But he wasn't sure about Yuuma.
"The reason ghouls need human flesh is because of our high levels of Rc cells compared to normal humans." Shuu continued unbothered by Yuuma's stare. Yuuma was bewildered at first by the fact that Shuu disclosed their identities as ghouls so easily to the doctor and now Shuu has some knowledge of ghouls and human physiology. He couldn't help but stare in amazement and shock.
That statement only made the doctor look at Shuu with a blank face as if it was common knowledge.
"What if you bioengineered the Rc cells to be higher than normal but still lower than let's say….An A-ranked ghoul. But you wouldn't transfer any predatory organ like the kagune to the host. Wouldn't that make them have the regenerative abilities of a ghoul and resistance to sickness and diseases?" Shuu pressed on. The doctor was now on the edge of his seat as if he was reaching the climax of his favourite movie with expecting eyes hidden behind his hair.
He too had thought of this theory but never gave it voice, maybe he was wrong about all rich people?
"Now, what if you alter or modify a ghoul's Rc cells to the point where they can eat normal food instead of human flesh? Maybe you'll have to do more than that. Maybe you'll need to modify some organs to make it work?" Shuu asked honestly.
It was the doctor's turn to stare at Shuu with shock. This young man just entered his office and was throwing theories here and there and that would be laughed at by his peers so easily and believed that there was a possibility for such things to actually happen. If it had been any other doctor they would have told Shuu to leave their office after hearing his second theory. But somehow, the young man managed to spark a light in him that was growing into a flame.
"Forgive me for forgetting. But what is your name?" The doctor asked with passion in his voice standing up with his hands on the table.
"I am Tsukiyama Shuu." Shuu answered.
"Your first request sounds feasible, come back in April that's at least two months from now. But the second is more of a wish. But, I lack rank A ghouls to work with, if I had at least five of them, there could be headway in that project." The doctor surmised with his hand on his chin.
"The Tsukiyama family will sup-no, I will give you all the support you need doctor! And you will get your A ranked ghouls you want so much this night or the following. No, expect me this night." Shuu said with a fire in his eyes. He was happy that the doctor didn't think any less of him because he was a teenager but listened to him like a fellow adult. He shook the doctor's hand and turned to leave.
"But, what if I told the association that you are a ghoul? I could make away with your money, gain my research materials and move up in the ranks here." The doctor said casually which made Yuuma and Shuu stop in their tracks.
The air suddenly got heavy. It was as if something tried to make the doctor curl up and hide, Yuuma felt this and was simply looked down at the floor wide eyed.
Shuu slowly looked over his right shoulder.
"Then you would have created a monster that killed everyone here in cold blood. And I'll make sure to do it before reinforcements arrive. I'll also release the ghouls captured here to take their revenge on the people in lab coats. I am sure they are starved and would like a little snack before seeing the light outside." Shuu proclaimed as he activated his kakugan.
