Night fell.
Inside a hotel room.
Mu Qing looked at the man before her, a flicker of panic in her heart. She felt a sense of inevitability, a premonition that what was coming was unavoidable. She simply wasn't ready.
But some things weren't up to her.
"What do you want to do tonight?" Mu Qing asked, knowing the answer full well.
Lin Fan smiled. "Wife, I miss you so much. I want to sleep with you tonight."
He often pondered the fact that his wife used to be very proactive, but recently, she hadn't made the first move once. He figured she must be waiting for him to take the initiative.
Yes, that must be it.
Mu Qing felt tense. Her fingers gripped the bedsheet as if preparing for a major event. She stood and walked towards the bathroom. "I'll take a shower first."
"Okay," Lin Fan replied.
Inside the bathroom.
Mu Qing leaned against the sink, staring at her reflection. She exhaled deeply, found a shower cap, and gathered her hair. Then, she undressed and stepped into the shower.
The showerhead sprayed warm water, washing over her smooth, white skin. Gradually, a layer of mist enveloped the glass shower door.
Outside.
Lin Fan flipped through channels with the remote, searching for a good movie. He finally found one that looked interesting, clicked on it… and was prompted to pay two yuan.
He took out his phone and expertly scanned the QR code, making the payment. A notification pinged on Mu Qing's phone – two yuan of her hard-earned money, spent by her spendthrift husband.
Sounds emanated from the television.
"You're a traitor! I treated you like my own son!"
"Hahaha, treated me like your own son? You killed my father, usurped my mother, and you dare say you treated me like your own son? I endured humiliation and learned your martial arts, all for this day!"
The plot was captivating, and Lin Fan was engrossed.
However, the fact that this persevering character was the villain made Lin Fan ponder. Something seemed amiss. Why was he portrayed as the villain?
Mu Qing emerged from the bathroom, clad in a bathrobe, a fragrant aroma trailing behind her. The scent of her body wash was pleasant. She saw Lin Fan resting his chin on his hand, intently watching the television, seemingly lost in thought.
She stood behind him, the fragrance wafting towards him.
"You're done?" Lin Fan reacted immediately to the scent, turning to look at Mu Qing, a goofy smile spreading across his face. "Wife, you're as beautiful as ever."
Mu Qing, prepared for this, replied, "I'll be even more beautiful later."
"Huh?" Lin Fan looked puzzled. What did she mean by that? Had she bought new clothes? Thinking about it, that was very likely.
"It's nothing," Mu Qing shook her head. She had just blurted it out without thinking.
"Oh."
"I'll go to bed first."
Mu Qing lay in bed, her heart pounding like a drum. She had never imagined that one day, she would be forcibly claimed as someone's wife, then…forced into intimacy. And yet, she felt a strange anticipation, a sense that something was amiss with her.
Was it stress? Was it affecting her mind?
Lin Fan finished washing up, then climbed into bed wearing only his underwear. Seeing Mu Qing's surprised look, he smiled. "I like sleeping in my underwear. It's more comfortable."
"This movie is really good, but the villain is so pitiful. I almost sympathize with him. Have you seen it?"
"If not, it's okay, we can watch it together."
Mu Qing was incredibly nervous. None of Lin Fan's words registered. Why was he talking about such trivial things at a time like this? Were they really that important?
Lin Fan waved his hand in front of Mu Qing's face. "Wife, what are you thinking about?"
"Nothing," Mu Qing replied, her mind snapping back to the present.
Her hands, hidden beneath the covers, were clenched tightly. She was extremely nervous, completely unsure of what would happen next. Would he pounce on her, roughly tear off her clothes, and then… indescribable things.
Soon, the movie ended.
"Ah, what a pity. He almost won."
Watching the villain die, Lin Fan felt a tinge of sadness. He rather liked the villain. It was just such a shame.
"Let's sleep."
Click.
Mu Qing proactively turned off the lights and waited quietly. She anticipated that what was about to happen would be painful, perhaps also pleasurable, but she remained tense, not daring to move.
A long time passed.
She still hadn't felt his hands on her, nor the weight of his body pressing against hers. She was puzzled. Why hadn't he made a move? Could there be something wrong with him?
Although Mu Qing was inexperienced, she knew that some men suffered from hidden ailments they couldn't speak of. Besides, this wasn't the first time. Last time was the same. Something felt off.
"Are you asleep?" Mu Qing asked.
Lin Fan replied, "I'm asleep."
"Oh."
Mu Qing was just asking.
"Are you asleep?"
"No."
At that moment, Lin Fan turned on his side, reached out, and placed his hand on Mu Qing's waist, his chest pressed against her back. This action made Mu Qing tense up, feeling as if…
"Let me hold you while we sleep," Lin Fan said.
To Mu Qing, these words carried a certain implication, like someone saying, "I'll just hold you, I promise I won't do anything," and then proceeding to grope all over. Or perhaps, "I'll just rub against you, I definitely won't go in," and then…
But she underestimated Lin Fan.
All the way until…
September 30th.
Morning.
A ray of sunlight streamed in. The pristine white sheets remained pristine.
Mu Qing woke up groggily, opened her eyes, lifted the covers, and looked down. Her clothes were intact, undisturbed. She looked to the side. Lin Fan, who should have been lying beside her, was gone.
"Sigh."
She sighed, the meaning unclear. There was definitely some disappointment. She had been prepared, yet he hadn't done anything. Was it her lack of charm, or did he truly have a hidden ailment?
A trace of melancholy made Mu Qing's beautiful face even more captivating.
The door opened.
Lin Fan walked in, carrying a white breakfast bag.
"You're awake? I bought you some breakfast."
He placed the breakfast on the table, carefully opened the containers, and continued to arrange the food. "Go wash up. Eat while it's hot."
Mu Qing said, "Thank you."
Lin Fan replied, "Wife, why are you being so polite with me?"
If she had a more fiery temper, she might have retorted, "Why the hell are you being so polite with me?"
At the dining table.
Mu Qing, freshly washed, sat and looked at the breakfast spread before her. It was all her favorite food: soy milk porridge, steamed dumplings, spicy tofu, and meat buns, all still steaming hot.
Mu Qing's hair was long, and every time she lowered her head, it would fall forward, hindering her from eating. Lin Fan walked behind her and gently gathered her hair.
"You eat. I'll hold your hair."
Such a thoughtful Lin Fan, taking care of even the smallest details.
"Thank you," Mu Qing said.
Lin Fan smiled. "It's what I should do."
Mu Qing realized Lin Fan had many good qualities. Any one of these qualities would be commendable in another man, but the combination of so many in one person was truly surprising.
She suddenly had a question.
If he was so outstanding, logically, he shouldn't be single at this age, let alone fixated on her as his wife.
It was puzzling.
However, Mu Qing didn't feel any aversion towards Lin Fan. In fact, she felt quite comfortable with him.
"Have you eaten?" Mu Qing looked up and asked. Since things had already reached this point, she thought she might as well accept it and see what happened. Perhaps something different would come of it, or perhaps they were truly meant to be together.
Lin Fan smiled. "You eat first. I'll hold your hair."
A while later.
They left the hotel together. Mu Qing was still in a simple disguise to avoid being recognized. Although she hadn't appeared in public for a while, even an unknown beauty would attract attention. If she didn't take precautions, being recognized could be troublesome.
Lin Fan held Mu Qing's hand. Such an intimate gesture was commonplace for him, but for Mu Qing, it was a first.
The air outside was fresh. The morning streets were bustling with people, all busy with their own affairs, none noticing the two celebrities who had just emerged from the hotel.
An international superstar.
And China's guardian deity.
Lin Fan was easily recognizable, often strolling around without any disguise. But his usual companions – Old Zhang, Ginseng, and the hen – were too conspicuous.
Now, without them, it was harder to attract attention.
He took Mu Qing shopping and wanted to take her fishing, planning to spend the day with her. But he remembered Old Zhang was still at the Special Department. If Old Zhang woke up and didn't see him, he would surely be worried.
"Wife, let's go back to the department. Old Zhang will be upset if he doesn't see me," Lin Fan said.
Any other woman, upon hearing this, would have flown into a rage. "You scumbag! You were going to take me shopping, but now you want to go see someone else, and an old man at that! You must not love me anymore! Get out…"
Mu Qing simply said, "Okay."
She didn't feel awkward with Lin Fan; she just didn't know what to say. If there were other people around, it would be better. It would provide topics for conversation, allowing them to interact while she listened quietly.
Lin Fan smiled. "I knew my wife was the best."
Mu Qing smiled. She was indeed quite agreeable. At the same time, she wanted to proactively interact with Lin Fan and see how compatible their souls were. Perhaps they were truly in sync.
At least for now, she felt quite good, without any problems. Although she felt nervous when they were alone, didn't that mean her heart was fluttering?
At the Special Department.
Old Zhang woke up, and for a moment, when he didn't see Lin Fan, his face paled with fright. He felt like a child waking up and not finding his mother.
Fortunately, Lin Fan returned in time.
He took Old Zhang and the others out shopping.
Everything was as peaceful as usual.
