Chapter 7: Spoiled Human Child

"So where are we going," Ivar asked and by now, his nose had healed up due to his healing powers.

Devin stopped to look at the time flashed on the building's big screen and saw that it was already eight in the evening.

"Home."

Ivar's eyes lit up like stars when he heard his master's reply.

"Really!? Really, we're going home?!"

Devin glared at Ivar again but as his best friend, Ivar ignored his annoyance and still spoke comfortably.

"But are you sure, though? I would suggest you eat at least a soul today to satisfy you," he said and Devin stopped in his tracks.

"Haven't you known me for many years already? Don't you know anything about this curse," he asked, feeling annoyed again and Ivar looked at him as he shrugged his shoulders.

"So what are you going to do? Feed off of human blood of criminals and still feel hungry? I'm telling you, those policemen are already curious of what you're doing. We can't get involved in their world too much!"

Devin sighed then pinched the bridge of his nose. "Then what do you suggest? I eat souls and let the curse worsen?"

Ivar rolled his eyes at his master. His MASTER.

"You're smarter than that, Devin. The curse only worsens when you eat the souls of others forcefully. I'm saying... you eat the souls of those people who are about to die so it's not forced!"

Devin squinted his eyes at his servant.

"It's not delicious."

Ivar scoffed. "You sound like a spoiled human child who's picky about food! It's not about it being delicious... but how it is supposed to satisfy your hunger!"

Devin grinned. "You sound like a mother."

His servant raised a brow at him. "So you acknowledge my comment of you sounding like a spoiled human child?"

Devin's grin disappeared and annoyance flashed in his eyes again.

"Hey, if you're going to tease, then don't get angry when one teases you back," Ivar said then Devin started walking again.

"Shut up."

His servant followed him again then spoke.

"Hear me out. You keep feeding off of human blood and occasionally, a few human souls. You've been out of that mansion for 18 years and you're still not satisfied. We haven't even found answers to what you're looking for either!"

Devin stopped walking and looked at Ivar seriously.

"That's why I said we're going home."

Ivar sighed. "I know, Devin... but what if we go..."

His servant pointed at the sky and Devin already understood what he meant.

"No! How many times do I have to tell you that I won't be going there!?"

Devin sounded really angry this time so Ivar didn't dare press on that suggestion again.

"Okay, okay... then back to the mansion it is, but let me handle your hunger," he said then Devin gave him a disgusted look.

"Fix your words, or people who might hear you will misunderstand what you've said."

Ivar's eyes doubled in size.

"Devin! No one could hear us! You know what, I'll just go directly to the point. Once we go home, I'll make it possible for you to eat human souls, okay? You won't have to force it," he said then Devin looked at his servant seriously.

"How?"

"I'll talk with old man Gladios to help me on this. You don't have to worry."

Ivar sounded genuine and this gave Devin a little bit of relief.

Ivar is his best friend indeed, before they even came to the human world for shelter. Whenever he said Devin not to worry about a thing, the soul eater wouldn't really have to worry about anything.

"Thank you, Ivar."

His servant grinned, knowing that his master rarely expresses his gratitude. But when he does, he knows it's genuine.

The two of them started walking on the streets again then Ivar spoke, changing the topic.

"It has been 18 years, huh? I'm excited to see them! I wonder how that human baby is already?"

The moment Ivar said this, Devin suddenly stopped in his tracks.

"Devin?"

'Right... the human child.'

Devin scoffed, then started walking again. This made Ivar curious but knowing how his master is if asked about his thoughts, he would get really cranky.

Ivar followed his master. "Do you think we should get something for them since we've been out for 18 years?"

"Is that necessary?"

Ivar rolled his eyes. "It isn't, but living in the human world for many years had already made me pick up on some stuff that they do! Come on... they are like our family now since we left the realm!"

Devin looked at Ivar.

"Family?"

Ivar nodded enthusiastically. "Well, yeah! We've been here years before old man Gladios and his granddaughter came! We've been taking care of each other since," he answered with excitement and Devin just looked at his stupid, noisy servant beside him as he rambled on.

"If my memory serves me right, today is also the old man's 77th birthday! Let's get him something, too!"

Devin smirked since he found the thought funny and amusing.

"He's about to die in a few years. Why bother?"

Ivar shuddered and gasped. "How cold of you! He's working for us!"

Devin nodded. "Well, for a price."

His servant squinted his eyes at his master. "Whatever. I'm still giving them all a present."

Devin walked off again.

"Suit yourself."
