Chapter 21: Investigation

"Your Majesty, do you want to see the new city layout per your design?" Moka Rose, the head of infrastructure and city planning, said to King Adrian.

A day had gone past since the news about the missing elven girl. Since then, with Braum Vanderlinde, Grant Holmes, and General Tobias Williams in charge, there had been major efforts into investigating the tracks of the culprits. Extra security had also been put up around the elven territory.

'I can't keep running away like this...but I'm not sure I'm ready for the responsibility just yet' King Adrian thought in his head. His mind was going through all sorts of different possibilities—one that includes finding the elven girl to be long dead or broken and knowing it was partly his responsibility.

'I've already been having trouble sleeping over the Vathrians I left back in the previous world...' King Adrian said in his mind.

"Your Majesty?" Moka Rose, who noticed that King Adrian was not paying attention called out.

King Adrian then realized he was in the middle of a meeting with Moka Rose and snapped out of his daydream. "I apologize. What did you say?" He asked.

"I said, the plans for the new city layout that you have conjured up to replace the old one was finished. Do you want to see it?" Moka said again.

"Ah, yes. Please." King Adrian replied.

Moka Rose took a pause to look at King Adrian properly. She noticed he was not his usual confident self today. Moka Rose took a blueprint from her bag and stretch it across the King's table in the study room. The sketch showed a much different layout than the old capital city.

"Here it is. As you have requested, my team have designed the new city to be grid-like with emphasis on city blocks, districts, and some open spaces scattered throughout...I must say it is certainly an interesting design." Moka Rose said as the studied the sketch.

"Yes...our previous capital city used a concentric zone model with the castle in its center and everything else moving outwards in a circular structure. I feel that the same design would impede our efficiency this time since it is a design created centuries ago...What do you think?" King Adrian asked.

"Your Majesty...I am not quite sure just yet but if you think this is for the best...then we will build according to your specification." Moka Rose replied.

"Trust me...it is. Now, I want you to further develop the different districts in each grid. Come back to me once you have done that." King Adrian said.

"Yes, Your Majesty." Moka Rose did a salute but did not move.

King Adrian noticed Moka had not left the room yet. "Was there something else?" He asked.

"Yes...The sewage system is also currently under construction so I thought I should let you know." Moka Rose said.

"Hmm...yes. Good. Where do all the sewage waters go in your design?" King Adrian inquired.

"They go to a river located west of this castle."Moka Rose replied.

"That river?Hmm....that would be a problem. Alright, you're dismissed for now I'll let you know." King Adrian motioned Moka Rose to leave the room and she did.

"Braum..can you—" King Adrian was about to say but he suddenly realized he appointed Braum to be a head investigator to the missing elf case.

"*sigh* Hey, you." King Adrian said to a butler who was standing near the door.

"Yes, Your Majesty?" The butler replied.

"Arrange a meeting with the head of mages, Vaye Braithwaith. Right now." King Adrian ordered.

"As you wish, Your Majesty." The butler left the room.

In the crime scene where the missing elf was kidnapped, numerous Vathrian military officials were moving and scouring the entire crime scene.

"How does it look?" One of them was Braum Vanderlinde, who was now in charge of this investigation.

"With all due respect, former general Braum, the intelligence department can handle this." Grant Holmes, who was also there, replied.

"Well, the King tasked me to be here so I guess you should let me in on it. Or do we have a problem with the King's order?" Braum said with a menacing voice.

"*sigh* fine. They're not amateurs. It's more like...they have the capabilities of a country's intelligence. We're still looking for tracks." Grant Holmes replied.

Braum started to think while touching his chin. He turned to an elven woman. "Hello, miss...."

"Merith." The elven woman replied.

"Ah yes. You were one of the first elves we encountered....what do you think? Do you think they're just bandits who are trying to find elven slaves or something else." Braum asked.

"The latter. We are used to dealing with the usual bandits. They are not good in hiding their tracks either so the fact that we are even looking for it means it's not the normal bandits we usually deal with." Merith answered.

Braum frowned and started thinking in silence. "Was Robert Bedford transported here with us?"

"Him? No way." Grant Holmes interjected.

"He's the only one with the magic capable of finding any tracks," Braum replied.

"Yes. But I can't stand him." Grant Holmes replied.

"Enough with your jokes, was he transported here or not?" Braum said angrily.

"*sigh* he did. He's somewhere in the town" Grant Holmes replied again.

Merith was looking at the conversation between the two with curiosity. "Who is this Robert Bedford? Can he help us?" She asked.

"He's a renowned detective but.....let's just say he's eccentric," Braum answered Merith's question.

"But he can help us? Please, for the missing elven girl's sake." Merith said with pleading eyes.

Braum did not answer but turned to look at Grant Holmes.

".....Fine. We'll call him here." Grant Holmes responded.
