Elaine set down her empty glass of milk and licked the corners of her mouth, not bothering to reach for the light, but instead tucking her legs in and pulling the covers over her, ready to just go straight to sleep.
"Ding, ding, ding--"
Unprepared, the phone set at the foot of the bed suddenly rang, not loudly but a little shrilly, startling the already sensitive Elaine in the stillness of the night, withdrawing several paces into the bed, her heart pounding.
But then quickly reacted to the fact that it wasn't as if the phone hadn't been ringing before. In the last few days of her stay, Elaine had received occasional calls from family members and psychiatrists out in the country, only they had been careful about the time of day, and this was the first time they had called this late at night.
