Chapter 10: Chapter 10: On the Run

“Where are we? Volker exclaimed, suddenly coming awake.

Erika put her hand on his shoulder.

“We’re in the back of a cart. They are taking us to someone who can help you,” she said.

Volker groaned.

“You’re going to be okay,” she insisted.

“I guess I passed out?”

“Yes, you passed out.” She added, “But you didn’t lose that much blood.”

“Yeah,” he said, “I’ve always had a problem with the sight of blood, especially my own.”

“The bullet is still in your leg. It will need to be removed. Also, don’t be alarmed, there’s another man in this cart with us,” Erika explained , trying to keep her voice down in case the driver was passing a German checkpoint.

“His name is Remy.”

“Is he a member of your spy ring?” Volker asked.

The fact that Volker would make that assumption struck her as odd, especially considering that it was true. She hesitated, considering how to answer.
