Chapter 25

The alien we defeated at the city hall isn't the only one attacking a place. The day after the first attack, a lot more were reported to be seen all over the city and it's terrifying me. We know how to defeat them but…

If it really is the government behind them, then it's only proving how they're willing to risk other people's lives just to get me and Jack on their side.

The worst part is Jack and I can't even try and defeat the other aliens with Lexi, Sam, and Gage. Most of the time, the attacks are on the other side of the city and there's no way we can get there in time. We want to help everyone out so nobody gets hurt during the attacks, but doing so would mean we're letting the government win.

And that will be a lot more dangerous for everyone.

No doubt Lisa and Randall will try to brainwash me and Jack if we choose to go with them since we're the two that they're struggling to keep under their control. And once we're brainwashed, who knows what they will do with us?

There is a sudden knock at the front door of my house, and it's not stopping at all so I walk over to answer it, seeing Jack there looking really worried. "There's an alien attack," he says. "At the elementary school."

The elementary school…

If the government is behind the attacks, they just took things way too far. There are a bunch of little kids there.

My sister is there.

I don't even hesitate before putting my shoes on, then leaving the house and getting my bike since Jack rode his here and we can get to the elementary school a lot faster.

As soon as we get there, we see a lot of students and teachers already outside of the school, and most, if not all, of the students are crying. Their faces are extremely pale, looking terrified.

Which only makes me really mad.

These are children. They're probably going to be very emotionally scarred, especially if they caught sight of the alien.

I look around, trying to see if I can spot Emerald. I don't see her at all.

I ask Jack, but he doesn't see her either so we walk over to one of the adults to see if they know if all the classes made it out safely.

He tells us there is still one class left in the school, and I bet it's Emerald's class.

After hearing the news of one more class being left in the school, Jack pulls me away from everyone so we can talk privately. "How are we going to do this?" he asks. "It's only the two of us."

"We'll still have to try," I say. "There are kids still in the school. You know what the aliens can do to us Glitches. Imagine what they can do to little children. And there's a very high chance my sister is still in there. All we have to do is strike the alien in the chest. With a weapon we don't have."

"We'll find something," Jack says.

We then hurry into the school so we don't waste anymore time. Unfortunately, we can't look for the alien yet because we need something we can use against it first.

We soon come across the janitor's closet, so we check in there for anything we can use. Jack immediately grabs a broom, stepping on the bottom and pushing the rest of the it so the bottom snaps off.

I end up picking up a trash can's lid. "This will make a good shield," I say.

"Especially if you turn it invisible," Jack says, handing me the broom stick and I take it from him.

"Smart," I say.

Jack grabs a trash can lid and a broom stick as well before we left the janitor's closet. We walk through the hallway as quietly as we can, not knowinit'sg when the alien will show up. Every corner we reach, we have to peer around carefully to see if there.

We finally find it around a corner, just standing in front of a classroom. Almost like it's guarding it.

"That's probably the last class," I say quietly so only Jack can hear me.

"Why is it guarding it?" Jack asks.

"Because Emerald is probably one of the few people I will do anything for," I say. "If the government is behind the aliens, then they're probably trying to scare me into going with them by showing what it will feel like if my sister is in danger. Jack, I have to get into the classroom. I have to make sure she's okay."

"The alien isn't going to move at all," Jack says. "We'll have to take it down first."

I nod and take a deep breath before looking at the trash can lid in my hand, focusing all my energy to make it turn invisible without any of my body parts. It does, and I do the same thing with the broom stick so the alien won't be able to see it.

It will only look like I'm clenching my fists.

I look over at Jack and he nods, so we both walk around the corner so we're in clear sight of the alien. It immediately notices us and screeches loudly before rushing over towards us.

And I end up panicking and throwing the trash can lid at the alien.

It takes a few moments to turn visible after leaving my grasp but by the time it did, it already struck the alien in its face judging by the way the creature stopped in its track and suddenly moved its head back. The lid falls to the ground, once again being visible and the alien screeches even louder.

"I think I made it more angry," I say. "I'm turning invisible now."

"Got it," Jack says. "See if you can try wiping it off its feet."

"I can try but it's highly unlikely," I say, turning invisible and diving out of the way right as the alien tries to swing its arms towards me.

I still have the broom stick in my hand so with all the force I can, I crouch to the ground and swing it against the alien's feet. The creature falls to the ground, landing on its back and Jack takes the opportunity to use his glitch, making the broom he has levitate in the air before forcefully striking the alien in its chest.

The alien starts shaking a bit and once I remember what happened last time, I quickly move out of the way and so did Jack right as the alien exploded into a bunch of grey gunk.

I stand up, turning visible as I look at Jack. He looks at me as well and smiles. "We make a pretty good team, don't we?" he asks.

"We do," I say, smiling back. "Now let's go get those students out of here."

We go to the classroom door the alien was guarding and I knock softly on the door. "Is anyone in there?" I ask. "That thing is gone. It's safe to come out now."

There's a bit of noise in the classroom before the door slowly opens. The teacher is the one to open the door, and she only keeps it slightly ajar as she looks at us. "It's for sure gone?" she asks.

I nod. "Yes, one hundred percent."

She opens the door wider and announces to the class that they're able to leave the school now. However, nobody comes to the door as if they're all too scared to.

"Do you have an Emerald Starr in your class?" Jack asks the teacher and she nods. "This is her sister. Maybe if Emerald sees us, she'll know it's safe to leave and everyone else will follow her."

The teacher agrees and lets the two of us in the classroom. As soon as we step inside, Emerald says, "Amethyst! Jack!" before getting up from her spot and rushing over, giving the both of us a hug. "Is it true that thing is gone?"

"Yes, it's true," Jack says, crouching down so he's at my sister's level as he gives her a smile, which makes my heart skip a few beats. "We made sure we took care of it."

"I knew you would!" Emerald says, throwing her arms around Jack which made my heart stop altogether after seeing the guy I really like and am probably in love with interact with my little sister.

Since Emerald is comfortable enough to leave the school after seeing me and Jack, her fellow classmates get up from the seats and walk over as well.

Jack and I walk with them outside of the school and once we get there, we notice certain people have just arrived; Lisa, Randall, and the other Glitches.

We walk over to them and Jack says, "You don't have to worry about that alien. We already took care of it."

"Really?" Lisa asks. "Just the two of you?"

"Yes, really," I reply, and I really want to get mad at her for putting my sister in danger, but they can't know that Jack and I are skeptical about them. We need to have the upper hand right now.

"And let me guess, you're still going to refuse to come with us?" Lisa asks.

"Correct," I say. "Jack and I were able to defeat the alien on our own without your help and your training. So remind me, why should we go with you?"

"Because if you don't, you're putting the whole country in danger, not just the city," Lisa says, a dose of irritation lathered in her tone. "People can die. Your sister was at risk today, Amethyst. You were lucky enough that the alien didn't choose to attack her class and it was only guarding the door. But what happens when you're not so lucky."

Every inch of doubt I had about the government not being behind the attacks quickly disintegrated after she said that.

Because how would she know that the alien was only guarding the classroom door?

Jack notices Lisa's slip as well and says, "You know, we're not as stupid as you think we are."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Lisa asks.

"Jack," I say softly and when he looks at me, I shake my head.

"No, I would like to hear what he meant," Lisa says.

"Forget it," Jack says. "Just know that Amethyst and I are never going with you guys. You can try convincing us all you want but it's not going to happen. Got it?"

Jack walks away and before I'm able to, Lisa says, "Amethyst, you should know better than this. You don't have to blindly follow Jack, especially not after your sister was in danger."

"Excuse me?" I ask.

"You're not fooling anyone," Lisa says. "He's the one that's always shutting down the idea of coming with us. You just let it happen because you're too blind to know what's right and wrong."

"I'm sorry, did you forget a few moments ago when I pointed out that Jack and I defeated the alien without your training?" I ask. "I'm not blindly following him at all. I can think for myself and right now, I'm thinking that the more you persist, the less likely Jack and I will go with you so you might as well give all of it up now."

I walk away and over to where Jack is, by our bikes. "What did she want?" he asks.

"Same old, same old," I say. "Trying to get me to change my mind. At least we now know for a fact they're responsible for the alien attacks. Jack, what are we going to do if they keep this up? We can't go to every single attack and it probably won't be long before they refuse to let the other Glitches go and defeat them so there will actually be some damage done."

"We'll have to take down the source itself," he says.

"You mean…"

"That's right. If they keep the alien attacks up, we're going straight for the government."
