Kara's Pov:
Aaron Malcolm: The devil.
I grew up as a normal girl in Calton city, America, with 'normal' parents and siblings. My mother was a teacher at a middle school a few blocks away from my own, and my father was in the army. I had 9 siblings including myself- Billy, Alura, Melody, Mike, Caitlin, Kara(me), Jason, Serena, and Elena.
My older siblings were almost never around. My parents always told me that they were studying abroad, so I often only talked to them through facetime and they barely had any time to visit us. Melody, who was my favorite sister, got really I'll a few months back and couldn't even talk on facetime.. or at least that's what my parents told me.
All was well and somewhat normal, until two days after my sister, Serena's 10th birthday when I was 12, I overheard my parents talking to her in low voices in their room. I didn't mean to, but ended up eavesdropping anyway. "--report from Cait, and we now know your powers!" I heard my mom say that with excitement "You, like your eldest sister, Alura, have the power to slow down time! Isn't that amazing?" and my Serena replied in the same tone "Jace and I were right then! I just saw you say all that in slow motion! It's so cool"
Then my dad spoke in a serious tone: "I'm sure it's cool, hon, but you know that you have to keep this a secret from all your friends and your sister, Kara"
"yea, yea, I know. She has powers but we're not allowed to tell her because they are very dangerous and it may cost us our lives"
I was just standing there, with my eyes open wide, confused as to what she meant. I knew strange stuff had happened around me but them saying, I have powers? That just sounded like some stupid skit.
"I still don't understand everything,though.. Jace told me that all my older siblings were born on Volta and that you guys and our grandparents, all grew up there, so why exactly did you bring us here?" Serena had asked this question and it made me even more confused. After a few seconds' silence, my mom finally decided to speak up.
"She's old enough to know this, isn't she?" "You're right, honey" my dad replied. Then my mom explained everything, "The silvers come from the royal blood of Volta and the bloodline of Raya, and it has become a of must for all of us to get our blood checked at the age of 6 months.. Anyways, it was done with all your older siblings and their blood and dna were normal. However, when Kara's blood was checked, the royal physician revealed that she had the fury of the phoenix inside her."
"What's that?" Serena asked curiously. "It's known to be the strongest fire power ever given to anyone. And it is very rare. Kara is the first female in all of Zynph to be born with this power after the first holder of the fury: Raya, the black Phoenix, who lived over a thousand years ago." "That's so cool!! But why'd we have to leave?" Serena asked again.
"I'm getting there. Be patient... Your father and I were obviously worried that this particular ability of hers to be able to control fire, would make some bad people want to take advantage of her and hurt not only her but also the rest of the family. It is also written in the oldest books, that the holder of the fury of the phoenix is meant to lead the kingdom of Volta. We didn't want her to be burdened by all that at such a young age."
Then my dad started speaking "We
stayed there for about a year after she was born, until something we had been dreading, actually happened. Someone broke into the nursery on Kara's first birthday, and took a sample of Kara's blood and did some sort of spell. We heard her crying so we ran to the nursery, but the woman who had broken in, had already left."
"And after this, we just got so scared that something might happen to us, as well. My father, your grandpa, suggested that we should keep Kara away from all that. So we came here, to Earth, and Jason was born just a few days after." my mom finished.
"Oh~ That sucks though, doesn't it. But, why do you keep her away from this?"
"We think if she loses control, she could hurt all of us. You see, The fury may be very strong but it is also very dangerous if not controlled. And none of us, except Melody, knows how to help her with this, so we won't be able do anything." My dad explained.
"Do you know when Mel will recover from her illness?" Serena asked worryingly. "No sweetie. But she's strong, she'll be fine."
My heart was beating so fast and I felt like crying. I was so angry with my parents that they had kept all this from me and told my younger siblings, but at the same time I understood them. I felt suffocated so I just ran out of the house, crying.
The next few chapters are basically just flashbacks and Kara's past. They are important to understand her future.
I was sitting on a bench in the park that is situated just a few minutes away from my house. Hearing all that was just too overwhelming for me; What hurt most was that they never told me nothing. They told my younger siblings but not me!
I was having horrible thoughts at the time. 'what if I just never go back' 'will they even care to find me?' 'they've always cared about the others more' 'whenever Serena, Jace and I had gotten hurt, they had always neglected to ask me how I was, they've always cared more for them than me. I guess now I know why. I was the reason they had to leave all their friends and basically their entire lives behind'. I just sat there sobbing , with my face buried in my hands.
Probably about 25 minutes had passed when someone sat next to me. I looked up and saw that it was a guy.
He had jet black hair and was wearing a hoodie. He looked at me and asked "Did you run away from home too?" I thought he was a weirdo coming up to a little girl when he looked at least 17 himself. I just nodded slightly.
"You should probably go back. I'm sure your family's worried about you." I just stared at him for a little while. Although it was night, the lights were bright enough to help me make out his face. He had dark brown eyes and really long eyelashes. His skin was literally pale as snow. He was badly bruised, though. He had swollen eyes tha looked like they were that way from crying, and his lip was bleeding a little. I looked down and saw that his hand was all scarred too. There were deep cuts, that looked like they came from a very sharp knife I decided not to ask him about if though. he seemed trustworthy and harmless.
"I just want to be away from them for sometime... You know, sort out my thoughts." I replied.
Growing up, I was the eldest sibling in the house, because my older siblings were never around. My dad always had me take responsibility for all the younger kids. So it just made me mature earlier than most kids my age.
"yea, I get that. I also ran away from home. But not to sort out my thoughts. I suppose I'm just tired of all of them..."
"Did you get in a fight with your family?" I asked looking at all those bruises and old scars.
"Nah. Nothing of the sort.. my father just thinks I'm an idiot... That even comparing me to my older brother and sister is insulting. Even my little brother is better at almost everything..." He said with a smile which honestly made me worried. 'is he getting abused?' I thought.
"I'm sorry..." I said quietly.
"No need to apologize. I'm Ethan, by the way.." He said with another warm smile.
"Kara" I replied in a small voice.
"What are you doing here, Kara? Did you come with your family?I don't know many people from Zynph coming here." He asked curiously. I remembered my parents talking earlier.. "Zynph... I found out just now, that I was born there and that my family is also from there but we had to move here because I'm me... How do you know I'm from that place, though?" I asked.
He shrugged and said, "I could tell. my mother always preferred the quieter atmosphere of Earth, rather than our home planet so we moved to Canada, from a planet called Sparks, when I was 4. my father's business requirs us to move here and there all the time so the only places I've spent a long time are Canada, Korea and China. What about you? Do you know why you're here?"
"That's cool... Yea, Apparently my powers are so dangerous that my parents got worried that I may hurt them."
"What powers have you got?"
"I don't know..I think they said, fire powers or something. my sister's got the powers to slow down time... You?"
"Oh.. I have the power to control the wind. You wanna see?" He asked.
"Yes!!" He then made some movements with his hands and all the tree branches around the park starting moving. You could literally hear the sound of the cool breeze. The leaves on the ground were also all flying in the breeze. "That's seriously Amazing!" It made me so happy.
"Thanks. I'm serious though. You should go home now. It's too late for a little girl to be here alone." He said
"Hey! Who're you to call me a little girl. I'm 12! How old are you? 19?" I asked mockingly.
He laughed. "No!! I'm 15! 16 in a few months." We sat there for a little longer, just chatting about some of our favorites this or thats. Then I made up my mind to go back and get my parents to tell me the truth about everything. I was genuinely grateful to Ethan for helping me not make a stupid mistake.
Before going on my way, I decided to help him too. "You should not go back to your house if they're treating such a kind and warm person like yourself so badly." He just smiled and said that if I ever needed anyone to talk again, he comes here in the park every Sunday at this exact time, because it used to be his mother favorite place.
