Lightning was a squawk box, but would live through the night, since he was driving me to Tarton. I wouldn’t kill him. Why bother when he was helping me out, escorting me away from Erie as quickly as he could? The VW was untraceable and Lightning would be long gone in a few hours, somewhere in New York. Not many young men were helpful to me, but he was, and for that, I decided to save his life. Sometimes serial killers had to be crazy-nice, of course.Part 8: Damian Truth

36: Wonderland

12:31 A.M.

Highway 20

Erie, Pennsylvania

There wasn’t any action on Highway 20 for the last half hour, even though Damian expected there would be. He was quiet in the passenger-seat, disappointed, and concentrated on the headlights which led the Buick through the night. The splay of golden-white light arched over the highway, but showcased nothing important. He asked Ridge, “Are your high beams on?”

“The whole way. I haven’t turned them off.”
