"Do you honestly think you can just take our child from me?"
Ray's shock turned to cold anger, his eyes narrowing. "Esme," he hissed, his voice frigid, "you seem to have forgotten the terms of our contract. You signed away any claim to this child. You agreed."
Esme's laugh was bitter, cutting through the tension like a blade. "And you really think I'm bound by some piece of paper?" Her voice was mocking, almost amused by the naivety she saw in him. "I might have sworn, Ray. I might have given you everything. But did you ever think that I'd give up my own child? Our child? If you think that, then you don't know me at all." She took a step closer, her voice dropping, filled with a quiet but fierce determination. "And if you refuse to let me stay in my child's life, I'll take them by force if I have to."
