Chapter 38: The Forest Elf

In the morning Caith and Sionna quickly took down their camp. Caith turned into a wolf and Sionna got on his back with the two bags. They headed in a direction that only Caith knew.

A cloaked figure stood over a table. Looking at a mark on her arm that was faded. Indicating that the shifter attached to it was now dead. She knew it was the Basty named Kaori. She wondered about the Pugot that she had given control of to Ciall. If she died the curse would be transferred back to her. She examined the rainbow of markings adorning her arms and frustration boiled in her body. This hunt was no longer one for profit, it became personal.

The forest raced passed her in a blur of green mixed with darkness. When suddenly Caith came to a halt. He stopped so quickly Sionna almost flew off his back.

"What is it?" She asked him smelling the air around them.

'Elves.' He replied with a growl. From seemingly nothingness a tall slim figure appeared. She wore a green dress with leaf patterns and had long sharp ears. She held a bow with a loaded arrow pointed at the ground.

"Greetings," the forest elf replied. "We don't normally get trespassers here." She said as her cold green cat eyes did not let out any emotions.

"We are just passing through." Sionna said boldly while straightening up.

"I am sure, and where could you possibly be going that you would be coming through these parts." She said tilting her head and her long straight brown followed her movement.

"We are looking for an ice giant," She replied.

'Tell them everything,' Caith said to her. 'They know when someone is lying.' Sionna listened to the voice inside her head and spoke again.

"This wolf is a shifter who is half ice giant. We are seeking out his father to break a curse put on me." She added looking directly at the elf in front of her.

"How interesting," she replied putting away her bow and arrow. "Surely you must be tired from such a long journey. The day is coming to a close. Come stay with us and tell us more of your story." She said and Sionna heard the sound of arrows being put back in their quiver.

She looked around and saw that she was surrounded by forest elves who preciously blended into their surroundings.

'I guess we do not have a choice.' Caith said to her and Sionna slid off of his back.

"Thank you for your generosity. But it would probably be for the best if we continued on our journey." She tried one more time to get them on their way.

"Are you trying to decline our invitation? You know it a very rare honor to be invited in by forest elves." She said coldly Sionna instantly regretted saying anything.

"No of course not, we will gladly accept your offer." She said quickly.

"I am delighted to hear it, now can your lover turn back into a human?" She asked calmly folding each hand in front of each other.

"Oh, he can but he won't have any clothes on if he changes." She replied quickly while her face went red at her description of her and Caith as lovers.

"Our leader would not be amused by a monstrous wolf entering our sacred home. We do not mind the sight of nudity." She replied not wavering in her stone cold disposition.

Sionna gave Caith a nervous look and took the bags off his back and got his clothing ready. Sionna blushed even harder when she heard his bones crack and change under his skin.

She starred down intensely at the forest floor holding out his pants first and then his shirt after the put them on. He then took the bigger bag from her and put it on his back.

The elvish woman seemed unfazed by the sight and upon seeing that they were ready she nodded.

"Come," she said simply and they followed her into the woods.

Eventually they came to an area with massive trees. Trees so large that even Caith couldn't wrap his arms around a single tree.

It became so dark it was hard to see, and the elvish lady walked up to a tree and touched her palm to it. Immediately the bark opened up to show a staircase carved into the tree leaving its heart intact. Nervously Sionna looked at Caith who took the lead by ducking into the tree and following the elf.
