With a champagne flute balanced in my hand, I struggled to keep my focus elsewhere, pretending not to notice Miles seated a few tables away with Ines. To make matters worse, Jessica was right behind me. Her mere presence sent an anxious knot tightening in my stomach. One word—just one—revealing the truth about my marriage to Miles could ruin everything I'd worked so hard to achieve.

Silently, I sent a desperate prayer into the void, hoping that whatever higher power might be listening would keep her silent, at least until this event ended without a hitch.

The lighting in the hall began to dim. It was hard to make out faces now, even those seated close by. A flicker of relief crossed my lips, almost forming a smile, as the projector screen came alive. A soft, mechanical voice echoed through the hushed hall.
