A surge of fear ran through Amelia's body as she froze. She was terrified at the thought of the devil who was waiting to swallow her entirely.
"What should we do?" She asked desperately and soon the phone in her hands started ringing, showing an incoming call. It was the devil boss and the soon-to-be husband of hers.
"Hello," Amelia cleared her throat and answered the phone.
"Where?" The man's cold voice sounded from the other side.
Amelia raised her eyebrows, acting dumb.
"What do you mean by where?"
Caleb's heavy sigh could be heard as he spoke. "Fool, where are you? I came to pick you up."
"Oh," Amelia nodded although he couldn't see her. "I'm coming with the makeup team to the venue. Stay tuned, FOOL."
Caleb didn't know what to say. He was waiting for her in front of her house and here she was, going to the wedding location with the people he appointed as her makeup team.
Letting out an angry laugh he said, "I'm not the fool here, Mac-Amelia! You're the one. It's not the council office where the wedding takes place. It's a different place."
"What?" Amelia blurted out. "Yesterday, you told me it was the municipal court office but today... You're saying that it's a different place! Really? I can't understand you, mister booster."
Caleb massaged his temples tiredly. "Just give the phone to the person who drives. It's useless to talk with you anymore."
Amelia rolled her eyes, annoyed. However, she still did as he instructed.
"Sí, señor?" (Yes, sir?) The leader of the team answered with a serious tone.
"What language is she speaking?" Amelia whispered to the youngest one who was younger than all of them.
"Spanish," The girl whispered back. "She's from Spain or something."
"Oh," Amelia nodded understandingly. An evil grin formed on her lips. 'Let's see how he's the gonna deal with it.'
Amelia's hopes shuttered into pieces when she listened to the conversation more and more. The makeup artist was talking with Caleb in her mother tongue without the slightest hesitation. That meant, more likely Caleb knew Spanish no, no, correctly saying, he was fluent in Spanish! Oh, what a pity!
After talking with Caleb, the artist changed the direction and drove off to a different area. After five or six minutes, they finally reached their destination.
Amelia slowly got off the van and looked forward only to be dumbfounded. It was an open area in a corner of a beach. During the other half of the journey, she had closed her eyes to rest and because of that, she didn't notice the distinction until she got out of the vehicle.
"Wow!" She subconsciously exclaimed.
There was a red carpet with rose petals here and there, guiding the way to the small altar with a few charming decorations.
Although the wedding venue looked simple and beautiful, there was a danger of getting attacked by the waves of the sea as well because the altar was made right in front of the sea.
But it didn't make Amelia not fall in love with that place. She was naturally a beach lover hence it was a pleasant surprise for her. Without a second thought, she fell for it immediately.
Amelia was shocked again when she observed the guests who had arrived before her. There were a total of seven people. She could only recognize a few of them. Caleb's mother, an old man (maybe his grandfather or something?), his secretary, and a friend (maybe?) participated in the ceremony.
What made her even more stupefied was her father and stepmother. She didn't see them the entire morning and here they were... Taking part in the holy celebration of her 'I'm directly going to hell'.
Amelia wanted to run towards her father and cry in his embrace, telling him how afraid she was and asking him, the hero of her life, to save her from the devil. But she knew that... Although she behaved like that in the past, she couldn't do that anymore. She was left to deal with the matters all by herself.
When Mr Carter saw his daughter who dressed up beautifully like a fairy, his lips curled up to a warm smile. He nodded at Elder Langstone before approaching his daughter.
"Dear," He called out to her with tears in his eyes. "You look perfect just like your mother."
Amelia's heart ached when she heard his words. She also knew that she was the carbon copy of her mother's. Hence, every time she looked in the mirror, a pang of pain bubbled in her cracked heart.
She was becoming more and more like her mother who was the most beautiful woman Amelia had ever seen in her life. She wasn't exaggerating it because as a fact, her mother even won third place in the Miss World competition in the past.
"Let Father bring you towards him," Saying that, Mr Carter took his daughter's hand and started walking with her to the altar.
Caleb was standing there with a government officer behind him. Maybe he was the one appointed to fulfil the wedding routines. Amelia took a breath and smiled as she walked with her father.
She wasn't happy but she pretended for the sake of the people she loved. Unfortunately, her grandparents couldn't participate in her wedding because her grandma wasn't feeling well.
Mr Carter gently held Amelia's wrist and put her soft palm on Caleb's large, cold hand. Caleb reached out and clutched Amelia's hand, squeezing it roughly. Amelia almost gasped as she gave him a sharp glare. It seemed like he wanted her to suffer even during their wedding day.
Caleb bit his lower lip to prevent himself from smiling. Amelia's hand was so soft and warm. Because of that, he couldn't help squeezing it hard. He just loved that touch as he suddenly had the desire to hold it for the rest of his life. He froze when he realized what he was thinking.
'The heck!'
His mood became even better when he saw her glaring at him. She might be thinking that her look was killing but to him, it was just too adorable. He found it too cute. Maybe making her mad at him wasn't that much of a bad thing.
Amelia stood beside her soon-to-be husband and did the things the government officer instructed her to fulfil. She was like a robot. She didn't feel anything... She just stood there motionlessly until...
"Now, Miss Amelia Carter, please repeat after me." The government officer reminded her before reading the never-ending sentences.
"I, Amelia Maciereth Carter, take you, Caleb Lucifer Langstone, to be my husband, and these things I promise you. I will be faithful to you and honest with you, I will respect, trust, help and care for you. I will share my life with you.
I'll forgive you as we have been forgiven, and I will try with you better to understand ourselves, I will stay by your side in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, until death does us part."
Amelia's heart was throbbing fast against her chest as she repeated the sentences. They weren't like sentences to her. They sounded more than just words. Her whole body shivered as those words hit her tiny heart directly. She could feel that her heart was ready... to accept the man in front of her, as her husband.
Amelia looked into Caleb's glistening eyes deeply as she emphasized every single word one by one.
'I must let bygones be bygones. It's all in the past whatsoever. From now on, my boss is my husband as well. Although he's a playboy, now as I became his wife, I should be responsible and dutiful to him whether we get a divorce after a year or not.' She eventually made up her mind, thinking like that.
'This is my life. Why would I waste my time on a meaningless marriage even if it's only for just a year? I should work hard to make things work. I should obey my mother's instructions.'
Though she consoled herself thinking in that way, she felt somehow sorrow deep down. It was because she never had the opportunity to claim her true love. Maybe... she wasn't lucky enough.
Next, it was Caleb's turn.
"Mr Caleb, please repeat after me."
Caleb nodded halfheartedly before looking straight into Amelia's hazel eyes.
"I, Caleb Lucifer Langstone, take you, Amelia Macie..reth Carter, to be my wife, and these things I promise you.
As he spoke further and further, Caleb suddenly had a crazy idea.
'What if I take this relationship seriously?'
His mind opposed him right away.
'Are you crazy? She's a spy, an enemy! How can you possibly fall in love with an enemy? I guess she won't hesitate if she has to kill you.'
'Not anymore. She's my wife from now on, isn't she?'
'Bah! Yeah, yeah. But, you're the only person who's thinking like that. To her, it's just a deal that expires after a year.'
'Who knows if I get succeeded in moving her one day? What if she falls in love with me because of my charms in the future?'
'What about your one nightstands?'
'It's time for me to settle down.'
This time, Caleb looked at Amelia differently. To him, she wasn't simply one of his women anymore. She was more than that.
She was his wife, the person he would spend the rest of his life with...
