Chapter 47: 47. Thoughts
Waking up Rei decided to get some homework done. He did it till he felt satisfied by the number of assignments he had completed. Seeing the sun setting outside through the window Rei goes out of the room towards the hall.
He sees Narumi, Sora, and Meiko talking sitting on the couches inside the hall. Narumi and Sora seem to be discussing something seriously. So not wanting to disturb them he sits on the couch beside Meiko who is listening to both Narumi and Sora talk.
Meiko, noticing Rei sitting beside her, greets him, "Oh! Rei what were you doing?"
"I went to sleep, Meiko, and did some homework after waking up."
Meiko nods and Rei continues, "What are Sora and Oba-san talking about."
"Sora wants to invite a junior from the club tomorrow to lunch."
"Oh that is new Meiko. You guys never bring anyone home."
"It is but this guy is special. He is in the same year as you and is a pitcher. He pitches well and is probably better than me. He didn't get much exposure last year as the coach wanted to develop him more and keep him as a secret. He will be the ace of the team from now on and Sora is fond of him. So he wanted to invite him for lunch tomorrow."
Rei understood and wondered about the pitcher, 'To make Sora interested in him and Meiko praise him about his pitching, How well is he?'
"So It's ok right Kaa-san" Sora asked to confirm again.
"Yes it's alright. Tell him to come at lunchtime." Narumi confirmed.
Narumi got up after saying that and got up to go prepare dinner for everyone. Meiko followed her to help, leaving Sora and Meiko in the hall.
Rei turned towards Sora and said, "Seems like you like the guy Sora."
"Yes Rei, He will be the perfect person to fill the ace position now as Meiko left. He can easily be the No.1 pitcher in middle school."
Hearing it from Sora, Rei was surprised as when it comes to baseball Sora was always harsh and criticized a person even when he made a small mistake, and making Sora praise him the boy must be truly good.
They both turned on the Television and saw some recorded matches and analyzed them to pass time till dinner. Rei analyzed some plays cleaner and better than Sora as due to his eyes. He often helped both Meiko and Sora the past 2 years when they practiced alone due to his eyes. This also helped Rei to increase his knowledge of baseball by helping the two even though he stopped playing.
As they both continued to analyze various plays made by a pro, Meiko came and invited them to dinner. Making their way over they saw Shidou already seated along with Narumi waiting for them.
Taking their respective places they got to eating dinner. Completing dinner Rei went to help Narumi while Meiko went to see baseball with Sora.
Seeing them go enthusiastically Narumi shook her head and murmured in a light voice, "Both are so active when it comes to baseball just like those two."
Rei could hear her as he was right beside her and asked her, "Like who both Oba-san?"
Narumi hearing her was shocked that he could hear her but still answered, "It reminds me of Shiro and Tensei, Rei"
Rei knew that all three of them were childhood friends as they lived back in Tokyo before coming here. Rei always wondered about Tensei's childhood but didn't get the chance to ask them. So he asked out of curiosity, "What were you three like, Oba-san."
Narumi kept the utensil she was keeping and thought how to answer his question., "As I said before, I and your dad were childhood friends. We always played together and were like brother and sister. Your dad was always immersed in baseball and kept on playing it. He met Shiro in high school and literally forced him to play with him every day and they both formed their own baseball club in the school and won the championship after 2 years. Our friendship was really special." She smiled reminiscing.
Seeing her talking about it, he could see how close the three were. He felt sad as he couldn't play baseball or have a close friend like Shirogana for Tensei. He still had hope that he could meet Izumi again but that was also slowly vanishing as time passed.
Noticing him down, Narumi tried to cheer Rei up, "Don't feel down Rei. I'm sure you will play baseball once again soon."
Hearing her encouragement Rei could only smile wryly and get on with the dishes. Narumi breathed out some air seeing his wry smile. It was true that she had hopes of him recovering.
After completing helping her, Rei went back to her room as he didn't have the mood to see baseball with Meiko and Sora. He sat on his bed and opened his phone and saw texts from Keiko and Mizuki. Both of them were out of the station with their families for this summer and sent some pics for him. He chatted with them for a while and kept the phone aside.
He fell on his bed feeling tired but he couldn't sleep as he had a nap in the evening. He tossed and turned around but couldn't fall asleep. His thoughts slowly drifted towards today's session with Dr.Jim and his talk with Narumi.
'Can I play baseball again? It's been so long since I played and even I feel it's impossible at this time. But according to Dr.Jim and Narumi-san I could play and I am slowly getting cured. What was dad trying to say? I don't understand at all." He wondered with a sigh
As he turned he saw his picture with Tensei. Seeing Tensei's happy smile on it he remembered a saying Tensei used to tell him, 'Rei whenever you are confused let yourself free and don't think about it. If you are destined to be with something you will end up with it.'
Rei shook all his thoughts and believed in Tensei's words. With his mind at peace he finally got some sleep.
