Chapter 4: First day of Human School

Is this it, Selina wondered as she checked her now dry magical paper for directions. The winds were at the time a soft, gentle breeze, blowing away summer and beginning autumn. She checked the school sign that read: Welcome to Estralls High School. Well, I guess this must be it, she thought and was about to go inside until a she saw a familiar boy with handsome features. The boy walked towards her, "Wait, aren't you the girl from yesterday?"

"Yeah, I didn't know you go here."

"Me neither! I've never seen you around before, even though I've only been here for a month or so. Are you a new student?"

"Yeah, I just moved here."

"That's nice. My name is Duxis. What a coincidence that you are also going here! What's yours?"

"Mine is Selina."

"Nice name. Well hope I see you around."

Selina wanted to reply to him, but a sudden swarm crowded around him.

"OMG! What is that cool thing you are wearing on your wrist?"

"Uh... its a watch." Duxis replied uncomfortably.

"I've never seen a watch like yours before though! Where did you buy it from?"

"Um... I don't know, I got it ... from a friend."

As all sorts of girls huddled around and talked to him, Selina saw some boys glaring at him and even cracking their knuckles. Wow, I guess jealousy is also a part of this world too, she thought to herself. In the end, Selina was not able to talk him again, so she went inside to find where her class was.

"Alright, settle down now, the class is about to start," the teacher commented. "I would like to introduce a new student today," she turned toward Selina and asked, "Can you introduce yourself to the class?"

Selina faced her classmates as they murmured among themselves. "Hello, I am Selina. I hope to cast spells together."

One soon mockingly replied, "There's no such thing as magic!" The class burst into laughter at the ridiculous mindset of the transfer student.

"Now, settle down class," said the teacher. Then, she looked toward Selina with a face struggling to hold in her laughter and managed to say, "Please, take your seat."

As Selina realized her mistake, her face turned red with embarrassment. Class was conducted as usual, however, it was not without some frequent outburst of chuckling from both the other students and the teacher.

As Selina was on her way to eat lunch, one of the girls stuck out her leg and she tripped. The group of girls laughed at this event.

"What's your deal?" demanded Selina.

"What do you mean? We were just passing by," one of the girls replied.

"You stuck out a leg on purpose!"

"Well, you know we saw you talking to our prince, Duxis, this morning and you were trying to steal him for yourself!"

"What? I was just greeting him!"

"As the protectors of our prince, you need to stop coming even near our prince, do you hear me? Otherwise, we will do much worse things to you." She continued, "By the way, your talk about magic was absolutely ridiculous!" The girls laughed as they left. Selina got up from the floor and walked toward the cafeteria.

"What is up with them?! Some random chicks bossing me around?!" Selina said aloud. "I'll show them that magic is real!"

As she began to follow the girls who insulted her, she stopped as she remembered her father's advice. "I better not do that because that's definitely going to make me stand out even more and I can no longer investigate who the demon is." She stopped her pursuit and changed course back to the cafeteria.

* * *

Selina walked in the cafeteria and looked where she could get some food. She spotted some at a line and began to take tons of it. When Selina was about to leave with the food, the cashier yelled, "Hey, you can't just take stuff, you need to pay up! Meaning that would be $184.28!"

People start to stare at this incident as the volume escalates.

"What do you mean?"

"It means give me the money or you don't get to eat it!"

"But I don't have any of this 'money' you are talking about."

"Well, TOO BAD! Then you put that food back!"

"Why?"

"BECAUSE..! You know what? I give up explaining this to you. Security!" Police officers begin to run toward Selina and try to contain her, but Duxis stands in the way.

"I must request you to move and that's an order," said one of the officers.

"Woah, woah, woah, there's no need to do this to her!" replied Duxis. "She's a new student, so she's not aware of how things work here, so just let her off the hook for now, okay?"

"Well, what kind of person doesn't understand the concept of money?"

Duxis looked for his pocket and pulled out some money and cried, "Here! Here's the money, so please let her go."

"Well, I guess since the amount has been paid, there's no reason to continue this further." One of the officers turned toward Selina. "You can go for now, but if try something again, don't expect it to go the same way it did this time." The officers run out of the room and the fan girls held a fist and glared at Selina as she walked with Duxis.

"Thank you for saving me," Selina said to Duxis.

He looked towards Selina and whispered, "Listen, you need to be normal! Don't go around doing whatever you want like this is some kind of la-la land! There are actual rules you need to follow!"

Selina was about to protest, however he said, "I don't want you to keep embarrassing yourself, so I'm going to be around you at all times during school to make sure you act in a socially acceptable manner."

"Does this mean... we are dating?" Selina asked out loud. The group of girls looked furious towards the pair and looked as if the answer to this question would decide whether Selina lives or not.

"NO!" yelled Duxis, so loud that everyone in the whole school can hear him. "I mean of course not." The girls formerly staring daggers at Selina, now calmed down as they now learned that 'their prince' could no longer be snatched up by her.

Selina looked towards him as he began to walk out of the cafeteria and realized after the bell rang that she didn't eat anything yet.

* * *

The school bell rang and the students rushed into the hallways, anxious to leave. Some anxious to hang out with friends, some just wanting to pull yet another all-nighter, and others wanting a minute with "the prince" to sooth their minds for the day. However, Selina was none of those people as she did not have a home in the human world to return to. She continued to wait outside the school gate to figure out her next plan of action until Duxis noticed her still there a while after school ended.

"What's wrong?"

"Well, its just that I don't have a home..."

Duxis was surprised by her answer. "Don't you have any relatives you can live with? What about your parents?" She shook her head no.

"I'm... sorry. Um... well, I guess you can... stay at my place until you can find some other place to stay."

"Oh, thank you!" Selina hugs him and presses her chest against him. Duxis turns a little red and after a little bit of hesitation, he hugs her back.

"Well, no problem. Us orphans just have to stick together, right?!"

"Right..." she replied as she felt a little guilty about her white lie.

Duxis rode his bicycle with Selina to his apartment.

* * *

"We're here." Duxis said to Selina as the headlights turned off and he stepped off the bicycle. The apartment complex seemed shabby with some holes apparent. Duxis walked up the stairs to his apartment and Selina followed him. He unlocks the door with a rusty key and eventually unjams the door to let her in. The inside is a little messy, with some random scraps of paper, probably unfinished homework, lying around the floor. Selina picks up the mess as all of a sudden Duxis puts on an apron and turns on the microwave.

"What are you doing?" asked Selina.

"Well, seems like you weren't able to eat at school today, so I decided to cook something up for you! After all, I am a good microwave chef!"

Well, he really is quite considerate, thought Selina.

"Here, some instant ramen!"

The food unknown to Selina is steaming hot and Duxis swallows up his share quite quickly.

"I've never had "ramen" before. What does it taste like?"

"You've never had ramen before?" asks Duxis. "Where have you been all your life? A cave?" He nudges a ramen cup towards Selina. "Try it, its amazing!"

Selina looks at the ramen with curiosity and eats a bite. "Delicious!" commented Selina, surprised by her own impulsive comment.

"I know, right?" Selina quickly devours the ramen noodle cups and Duxis cleans up his apartment. He noticed that it was already late at night, so he decided to prepare a bed for Selina. "Let's see, Selina you can sleep on the bed if you want..." However, Selina already fell asleep comfortably on the floor.

"Better not wake her up, she has had a long day after all." Duxis quietly puts on some bed sheets on Selina and soon he falls asleep happily.

Sorry, for the long delay, but here's a new chapter! I will try publishing another chapter soon, but it may not come until summer, depending on how busy school is (likely to be the case). Feel free to send me some feedback, so I can improve the story!
