“Dehydration,” Yuuki said eventually with a shaky voice. “They—umm—their bodies purge everything to try and get rid of the bacteria, and if they don’t get enough clean fluids and medical help, they die of dehydration.” She sniffed. “But it doesn’t make any sense. This place is knownfor its good medical care. Like, top of everybody’s list.”
Ken nodded slowly. “Whole city gets sick at once; no hospital can handle that.”‘
“We can’t help them, then. We gotta get out of here. Please? Let’s just go.”
The desperation in her voice didn’t fall on deaf ears, but Kenna wanted more. On a side street that looked nearly empty, she stopped the truck. “Stay inside, okay?”
“Ken!” she protested. But it made no difference.23
