In the end, she chose to ignore his self-loathing. “I’m fine. Just a little tired. Can you help me down? It’s a big jump, and my legs are killing me from the ride.” The insides of her thighs felt like they were on fire. And muscles hurt in her butt that she didn’t know she had.

He nodded and gladly offered an arm onto which she could hold. It took some maneuvering, but she eventually dismounted with only a fraction more pain than she already experienced.

“I think there’s a talisman that can do stuff like this,” Ken motioned toward the animal. “And a whole lot more. I got the impression that the perpetrator still doesn’t have a good handle on it. But if I’m right, our bad guy has been trying at this for a while. Based on what I saw, my new friend here is the best thing he’s made so far, but he sure as hell isn’t done. We’re talking about a really messed up person.”

Dakota smoothed down some of her hair, which had come out of a braid thanks to the heavy winds. “I can imagine.”
