Chapter 16: Chapter 16

CARLOTA

I don't know what happened to Gabriela at that moment, I just know from one moment to the next she got angry. Kevin ended up convincing Alex he would go with Gabriela, that Alex should take care of the food, and that's weird, usually Kev wouldn't go with Gabriela, or at least he wouldn't have insisted so much on Alex staying at the house.

At the end of the concert, Gabriela fell asleep, apparently, she didn't sleep well at night, which made me suspect something is happening to Gabriela. She wouldn't tell anyone and that would be the moment I would take the opportunity to ask Kev what it was or what had happened while we were in the kitchen.

"Kev, can you explain what happened in Holland that makes Gabriela not want to talk about it?" I asked in an annoyed tone. "Nothing happened, what had to happen?" he questioned, confused, or at least pretending to be confused. "Anything, it's not normal she suddenly spoke like that, as if she were angry."

"Pregnancy hormones." He said and I rolled my eyes, because I knew it could be anything but that. "Carlota, baba, don't be paranoid, it's normal for Gabriela to change her mood so quickly, it's the hormones." My boyfriend supported "You'll believe that, but I know something is wrong with her, and it's related to Holland." I pointed out "Well, I already told you beforehand that nothing happened in Holland, in the year she was there she did a lot of things. She was studying, having fun… I don't know, typical."

"So, can you tell me the reason why you didn't come on vacation like you do every year?" I asked even though he already answered that question before. "Because Gabriela and I needed to rest and I wanted to show her Holland." He answered, "And you don't plan to say anything?" I had turned to look at Alex, because it's weird he didn't notice something in Gabriela or didn't say anything.

"I just think like them. Since she's pregnant, tells what happens to her, if this were one of those situations, I'm sure she would tell us. Besides, I trust Kevin, if something happened to her, he would tell us, right?" He asked, looking at his fiancée's cousin and he nodded. "First of all, I don't think we should trust him, because I'm more than sure they have secrets between them, and second, you said it yourself, she practically tells us what happens to her, but it's not always like that."

"In this case I think it is so." My best friend fiancée insisted, "Gabriela just wanted to go to Holland." Kevin defended his cousin. "And if all she wanted was to go to Holland, why didn't she tell anyone she was going? What's more, she spends a year there. When we asked her when she would be back, Gabriela evaded the question, doesn't that tell you something?" I asked ironically, because I know they were going to tell me it didn't mean anything and I'm probably imagining things "She liked Holland. I think seeing so much drama is affecting you a little Carlota."

"It's not affecting me; I know you know something and I'm not going to stop until I find out what's happening to my friend." With that I left the house and sat in the back garden. I needed to think, because there's something here that didn't add up. It could be Gabriela's hormones made her change her mood, but in this case I'm sure it's not because of the hormones her mood changed so suddenly, more than anything, because the time we asked her why she had gone to Holland without warning, she closed herself in and didn't explain the reason. By then, Gabriela was better about Alex, at least she was no longer depressed like she was at first.

"Baba, don't be angry, they're right…" Marcos said in a soft tone, but I denied "Marcos, don't tell me they're right, because I'm sure Kevin is hiding something from us." I responded "What's going on in that little head of yours?" He asked, sitting next to me. "Gabriela must have had a reason for her leaving so suddenly, don't you think?" I questioned "It could have been Alex."

"It had been four years since they left each other and she was no longer depressed like she was at the beginning. The reason must have been something else." I said, trying to find a solution to our problem. "Like what?" He asked, and at least seemed interested in hearing whatever I have to say. "I don't know, but nothing good. She would have at least let us know she's leaving." I pointed out, "I do believe that." He said, taking my hand. "But not the rest."

"I'm not sure about the rest, there's something sketchy, I won't deny it, but that doesn't mean something bad happened to her. If something had happened to her, she would have told us." He insisted, "You speak as if you don't know Gabriela. If she didn't want to worry us, it's obvious she wasn't going to tell us what had happened to her." I said, rolling my eyes. "So, what are we going to do?" He asked and that makes me turn in his direction. "Will you help me?" I asked with curiosity and hope, "Of course I will help you; I don't want you to get in trouble for investigating what happened to our best friend. Furthermore, there are things that don't fit completely and Gabriela doesn't seem to be willing to tell us. The question is, what will we do to find out what happened four years ago?"

"We have to start with her family." I said, starting to form a plan in my mind. "I don't understand." My completely lost boyfriend responded "Gabriela spent a year in Holland, the most normal thing is that she spent time with the rest of the family and not just with Kevin. He won't tell us anything, but the rest will. We just have to ask the right questions and make sure they don't suspect we're investigating the period Gabriela was there."

"And how will we do that? Because you can be sure they are going to suspect." Marcos said and a smile appeared on my face. "Don't worry about that, honey, they won't find out anything, we just have to prevent both Gabriela and Kevin from hearing us, because if not, we're lost." I responded and Marcos nodded "Okay."

"Thank you for helping me, honey." I thanked him, giving him a small kiss on the cheek. "I won't let you do crazy things alone, and if you suspect that something happened to Gabriela to make her leave the way she did, it's because there's something, the least I can do is help you." We kissed and a few minutes later we went back into the house to spend the rest of the day with the guys. Later I would think about how I would do so both Gabriela and Kevin wouldn't find out what both I and Marcos were going to do.
