Chapter 24: Chapter 23: Yae Miko fooling people

After stepping through the portal, Yae Miko experienced a sudden shift in her surroundings. The elemental energy she was accustomed to sensing had vanished, like a fish used to saltwater suddenly finding itself in freshwater.

Fortunately, the elemental power within her remained intact, and as a familiar of Narukami, she could draw elemental energy directly from Ei through their connection, which felt like a lifeline.

Upon emerging from the portal, Yae Miko was initially taken aback by the sight of countless people kneeling before her. However, she quickly understood the situation. This world had no true gods; deities existed only in myth and legend. Yet, this country had a rich Shinto culture, worshiping all manner of deities and spirits.

A sly thought crossed her mind: since she was already playing a role, why not pose as a celestial fox descended from Narukami? In this nation's mythology, fox spirits were considered divine, which meant she could be regarded as a god here.

She had always wanted to experience the reverence accorded to a deity. Unable to fulfill this desire in Teyvat, she saw no harm in indulging herself in this weaker world.

With this in mind, she glanced at the humans bowing their heads, afraid to look up at a god. Shaking her sacred Kagura bell, she spoke in a teasing tone.

"My, my, such a grand welcoming ceremony! I must say, I'm quite flattered."

"There's no need to keep your heads down. I am not Narukami herself, and such mundane matters would never warrant her descent."

Hearing this seductive female voice, everyone looked up in excitement and confusion. In an instant, they were all struck dumb.

Before them stood a girl with an otherworldly aura, her pink hair flowing down her back, adorned with fox ears peeking through. Her attire was both mysterious and alluring, her slender legs deliberately exposed.

Holy, enchanting, pure—she embodied the fox spirits of myth.

Behind her, emerging from the torii's shimmering veil, were a man and a woman, both equally otherworldly in appearance. Their clothes, made from materials and styles unknown to this world, exuded an indescribable nobility.

"Are you so entranced by my beauty that you can't even respond to my questions?" Yae Miko teased, thoroughly enjoying their reactions. In Inazuma, despite the scarcity of youkai, people respected her as the high priestess of Narukami Shrine, not because she was a fox spirit.

"Welcome, Lady Fox Spirit and esteemed immortals!" shouted the current head of the priestly family, the high priest of the Kannagi family, his face flushed with excitement. Though not Takemikazuchi, a celestial fox spirit from Takamagahara was still a deity.

"Is there anything the Kannagi family can assist you with, or do you bring a message from Takemikazuchi?" The high priest trembled with anticipation.

Yae Miko's heart leaped with joy. This old man was quite perceptive, handing her the perfect opportunity. She decided to teach him some simple onmyodo techniques later. Onmyodo, refined four hundred years ago by an Inazuma man named Harunosuke, who had studied under a Liyue adeptus, could be performed without elemental energy.

Such techniques were common in Liyue, alongside internal energy, martial arts, and numerous sects dedicated to these practices.

"My master," she began, "recently grew curious and cast her gaze upon the mortal realm. She saw malevolent spirits devouring humans, filling the world with resentment. Thus, she sent me and these two divine envoys to address the matter."

Upon hearing this, the High Priest Kannagi instantly turned to Kagaya Ubuyashiki.

"So, the reason for the descent of these three celestial beings is as we suspected. Our Kannagi family and the Ubuyashiki family have fought against these man-eating demons for a thousand years."

According to ancient records, the progenitor of these demons was a noble from the Ubuyashiki family who, for some unknown reason, became a demon a thousand years ago. Since then, the number of demons has steadily increased, causing untold suffering and death. The Ubuyashiki family was cursed by heaven, with each generation's children failing to reach adulthood, surviving only through intermarriage with the Kannagi family.

"Indeed, Lady Fox Spirit, it is deeply shameful. The man-eating demons are the result of my family's sins from a thousand years ago. To atone, we established the Demon Slayer Corps, adopting children whose families were destroyed by demons, hoping one day to end this ancestral curse," Kagaya Ubuyashiki said, his emotions overwhelming him. Joy surged through his mind, and tears streamed down his face.

He was overjoyed. The deities had descended to rid the world of these abominable creatures that had plagued the land for a millennium. The Ubuyashiki family had sought to end their ancestral curse for just as long.

"I am aware of your Demon Slayer Corps. When my deity gazed upon this land, they saw everything and informed me," Yae Miko said, arms crossed, nodding.

After all, she had knowledge of this world's future. The deity of the Celestial Island was truly impressive. Could he be a god of time?

"Originally, the demons should have been noticed by the gods a thousand years ago. What a pity," Yae Miko sighed.

"The Fox Spirit says they should have been noticed a thousand years ago?" the High Priest Kannagi asked in confusion.

Yae Miko nodded. This old man was quite the straight man in this act, much like the supportive role in Liyue's comic dialogues.

Ayato and Ayaka Kamisato stood silently behind Yae Miko, watching her performance and understanding what needed to be done. They were impressed by the High Priestess's adept handling of the situation.

"Indeed. None of the gods worshipped on this land have had their names correctly venerated. It's like sending a letter with the wrong name and address—the gods can't receive it," Yae Miko said, shaking her sacred Kagura bell.

Ding-a-ling~

"What? The names of the gods we've been worshipping are wrong?" The High Priest Kannagi, as the highest-ranking Shinto priest in the nation, looked as if he had been struck by lightning.

"Heh, the god you call Takemikazuchi is actually named Mikagami. The meaning might seem similar, but in reality, they are worlds apart," Yae Miko said, glancing at the dilapidated shrine dedicated to Takemikazuchi, then walking inside gracefully.

"Of course, it's not entirely your fault. In the divine era three thousand years ago, the gods ceased descending to the mortal realm."

"Gods are eternal, while a human life is but a fleeting moment. After a hundred generations, oral traditions and common knowledge inevitably become muddled. It's understandable that the true names of the gods were forgotten," Yae Miko explained. She turned to observe the crowd, some wide-eyed, some listening intently, others struck by the revelation. Her eyes gleamed with deep satisfaction.

Teasing others with such justifiable reasons was incredibly satisfying. This wasn't a lie that could be debunked—it was irrefutable, leaving no room for her fox tail to be exposed.
