Chapter 79: First Commission (2)

"Oi! Stop loitering!" Someone yelled.

"Tsk" The person who they yelled at said in response.

Currently, these two gang members were atop their building's roof. They were tasked with not just defending it, but also looking out for suspicious individuals down on the streets. Simply put they were lookouts.

"It's about to be night already, who cares?" Termina was a dome-like structure with mega-powerful stadium lights acting as the sun. That meant there was no moon when it became night, however.

This in turn meant that attackers had to have night vision to commit any sort of attacks during this guaranteed darkness. Not just that, but if the attackers dared to use light they'd be announcing their presence in the pitch black.

Of course, that didn't stop anyone from attacking at night.

After centuries of living underground, the people of Termina developing greater night vision was not at all farfetched. It was especially so since Termina was a crime-laden place. In the slums of Termina, natural selection played a large role. Those unable to act during the night would turn up dead in the morning.

"You never know!" But somehow, the night was still safe?

"Who is stupid enough to break that unwritten rule, no wait… who is brave enough?" The man said with a strong voice of certainty.

An unwritten rule. It wasn't like the scum of Termina were known to follow rules but in this case, things were different.

It was a tacit understanding from all the gangs of Termina.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The criminals weren't necessarily devout believers but this was the principle that applied here. Any gang that performed a night attack, or anything else considered immoral by these lowlifes, was giving permission to have that happen to themselves as well.

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Under those circumstances, any person affiliated with any group would not dare to stir up trouble. Otherwise, the first person to kill them would not be the enemies but their own faction. There was no other way to get out of breaking these rules than to push the blame to the sole culprit.

As for sacrificing a single individual to get one's goal... No one should try to be the funny guy. Who in the underworld was dumb enough to fall for this act? Even the lowest of the low had some street smarts.

The last gang that tried to play tricks did not last a week.

[Lights out, Current time is 7:00 PM, all Termina residents are advised to stay indoors]

"Huh…" The speaker system's words were a cruel reminder that I started doing the job a bit late.

"Looks like you all will have to stay after all" I said to the small group behind me.

The initial plan was for me to cause confusion within the ranks of the unfortunate gang, which by the way was named the Iron Knuckles, before Seamus, Hawk, and Colt, took out the lost prey.

"No, we'll go in too" Hawk said sternly. I didn't expect the firm refusal.

"Are you sure?" I had to ask again, it was pitch dark for them. My eyes on the other hand, which were previously being stung by the bright dome lights, were finally in their natural environment.

"It's fine, we have to participate too. We can't let you croak in there" Seamus said while putting on airs. He clearly wanted to show off his irradiate grade 6 prowess. It was a good thing no one aside from me could currently see his stupid face.

For this team, Hawk and Colt were the weak links with their grades at 3 as opposed to mine and Seamus' grade 6.

"Fine, in that case, try not to get caught. I'll pave the way" I said putting on more airs than Seamus. Hehehe, was it really putting on airs? I had the capability, he didn't.

Somehow seeing through my intentions, Seamus was gnashing his teeth in anger.

"Right, we should cover up" Hawk said before bringing out a face mask. It was like those commonly worn by bank robbers on TV. The main difference however was that this mask had a hole at both the top and bottom allowing for Hawk's mohawk to remain wild and free.

He really liked that thing.

Without further ado, we started making our way towards a lifeless concrete building. It had no paint and looked worn and chipped. It looked like a den of criminals and it made sense considering that it totally was.

"Stand back" I said as we approached the main door. It was made of metal sheets but…

I grabbed the door handle and then pulled on the locked door.

Clang Crack

The door made loud noises but I unhinged it seamlessly.

"Ah…" There was a light inside causing me to wince. Did the criminals not hear it was time for lights out? Staying past their curfew... what filthy scum.

"What the-!?" The criminals inside were caught off guard by the sudden rupture of the metal door. They instinctively reached out for their weapons but...

I was much faster.

Bang

The bulb illuminating the room burst into pieces. It turns out I had a knack for shooting.

"Sh- Shoot!" Someone declared, the first glance in told me this was the voice of 1 of 5 men.

Bang Bang Bang

The shoots intermittently illuminated the otherwise dark room but all they were able to witness were 3 fleeting masked figures darting towards their location.

Crack

An unexpected sound.

"Huh…" I was a lot stronger than I expected. Ended up killing the nearest goon with a single punch by complete accident.

Crack

I looked beside me and found out that Seamus had performed the same deed. As for the other two...

Hawk had shot one of the assailants and Colt Ummm… he tripped.

"We, we need light!" A fool shouted.

Bang

A bullet grazed his position as soon as Hawk heard of his voice.

"Damn it!" He shouted after aiming his gun towards Hawk's general direction. It was too late, however.

"Urgh…" I managed to run over and grab him by the neck before he could fire another shot.

"They employ regular people here…" It was something that came to me after realizing how easy it was to kill these gang members.

So… Did I feel remorse?

I had to admit it did feel a bit cheap but…

Crash

Nevertheless, I threw the man against a wall with all of my strength. The result was a pool of blood and a bloody mark on the wall.

"Don't blame me, I have a commission" Those that choose to live dangerously should be prepared to die suddenly.

Pwnzer Pwnzer

Dan Owens is a cold-blooded young man. Well, I think he is actually just very apathetic.
