Chapter 23: Assured Mutual Destruction
Words and concepts flow easily from governments.
When they create those words and concepts poorly, there is derision.
When they craft horrific concepts with clear and unambiguous detail, there is shock.
Sometimes concepts are set forth, which appease or placate. We can forget horrific concepts even though the policies remain.
Assured mutual destruction meant both participants of a war would suffer so immeasurably. No sane leader would even consider it.
We have a similar situation (on a much smaller scale) with air travel.
We can pack hundreds and hundreds of people into jet liners.
I suggested some chapter back that planes ought to be electric (and tiny). Small electric planes launched at airports by solar electric mass accelerators.
The larger planes are generally more reliable and safe. Less affected by rough weather.
This is a like mutual assured destruction. Large planes engineered to be safe. Hundreds dying at once is a terrible risk. A terrible consequence.
Governments, corporations, and inspection authorities take pause for every large crash.
When was the last time someone said "Maybe we should stop doing it.. that way?"
Stop flying huge planes to move people. It might not be workable for travel to some places.
People could fly in smaller planes for many situations. Smaller electric planes that each have wing or fuselage parachute systems.
There are other more important troubles in the world today. Yet, I think this concept for air travel is worth thinking about.
