"Let's break up."
These were the words that escaped the beautiful and flawless girl's mouth seated at the table across from me; my delightful expression that automatically shows whenever I'm facing my beloved girlfriend gradually vanished.
What did she just say?
Even though my ears heard those words, and that my mind understood them, my heart refused to listen.
Well, I am not alone in this matter.
We tend to become irrational in the face of our loved ones, and even in a dire situation within one's relationship, the heart wins most of the time.
Eventually, it leads to further and might be truly irreversible tragedy.
Red flags didn't matter; it's just a flag they said.
"W-what...?"
Unable to believe what I had just heard, such rhetoric was the only thing I could muster.
"Let's end this relationship, Jiho. I can't do this anymore."
I couldn't help but gulp at those serene words. After all, as the joy in my expression disappeared, it began to resurface within my nervous heart.
Yes, Yes! This is it! I'm going to be free!
"B-but why...? What's the matter? Is something wrong?"
I asked with my quivering lips; my eyes fixated on her sapphire gaze that seemed to drown any man that would dive too deep into this boundless sea.
"I need to focus on my debut. I hope you understand, Jiho. If you truly love me, you'll let me go, right?"
Ah. The cliche. But why does she even bother to say these things?
I swallowed my saliva as my lover's words gradually turned to music to my ears.
And yes, my girlfriend's an idol nearing her debut. However, we're not exactly that romantic with each other since it all began with her request to become my girlfriend.
It was merely a damn request, a fake relationship!
It was to avoid any lecherous men in the academy as I was the only one who could ignore an influential figure like her; that's just my loner life.
Of course, they couldn't even believe that I, and my girlfriend, Park Yerim, was truly in a relationship.
On the one hand, I was orphaned at the young age of seven, then left the orphanage at the legal age, and worked my ass off to rent a single-space apartment beside the highway that continuously disrupts my sleep.
Ultimately, I'm an avid reader and a shut-in gamer.
A Hikikomori.
On the other hand, Park Yerim was, in fact, a conglomerate's daughter, and that being an idol was just her dream. Hell, even if she did not work an hour a day or not work at all, she would still be richer than most people in this continuously developing country.
Anyway.
Who the hell would fall in love with someone like me?
In other words, I could say that I became Park Yerim's escape, though longer than I had anticipated.
"All right."
I took a deep breath; the chains of fake love were now becoming rusted.
Even if this becomes real, it would be every man's dream. But I wouldn't like that.
I'm just a gamer and also a reader who barely has a social life.
And I know myself that I wouldn't be able to fulfill my duty as a man to shower the girl in front of me with the love she deserves.
Filled with these thoughts, I noticed Yerim's silence, which caused me to look at her.
However, as deep as the Mariana's Trench, and as cold as the Antarctica's freezing air, her eyes were locked on me.
It was an expression I am familiar with.
"You...! Just w-why... Why are you okay with this?! Do you perhaps have other girls?! Are you cheating on me?!"
At that moment, Park Yerim slammed the luxurious table; they were in a private restaurant owned by her family, which was already named after her.
My girlfriend's tantrum continued.
"I thought you already know me...! You should know I'm just joking, right? Then you said you're all right with it?! Seriously?! Huh?! Tell me!"
Damn it!
I realized that I made a mistake; my hands then reached out to hers, intending to calm her down while my normal dull black eyes looked at her.
"W-wait...! It's because I love you that I can let you go if you wish for it!"
Feeling her soft hands and seeing her tearing sapphire eyes as though the sky was about to pour its rain, I calmed her down.
I then continued to speak as we sat at the same time.
"I-I apologize. It's just I respect whatever decision you make, you know that, right?"
It would be a lie to say that I didn't benefit from this relationship. Physical touches and the likes aside, my girlfriend bought me the latest PC and any books I liked.
It was my heaven on earth.
What's more, because of our thing, the bullies targeting me in the academy just because I'm an outcast began scurrying away. Some of them even tried to lick my boots just to get on her good side.
"Y-You really... You scared me..."
However, even if I did benefit by being with her, she's still and will always remain the dominant part of this fake relationship.
I awkwardly smiled at her.
"T-Then, you really don't have any girls?"
Hearing her attempt at reaffirmation, I shook my head.
"I don't. Okay?"
"How about Kim Minjeong, your girl best friend?"
I fell silent at the sudden question.
Kim Minjeong was my mere gaming buddy, who was the secretary of the academy's student council, nothing more.
We had little to no personal interaction at all.
But in Park Yerim's eyes, she's my girl best friend.
I didn't even know how she came up with it.
"Of course not. She's just my gaming buddy. That's all."
Opening my mouth to respond, it was Park Yerim's moment to turn silent.
Her piercing glare momentarily dropped.
She then closed her eyes for a second, heaved a deep sigh, and spoke.
"I believe you."
***
Two hours passed since their unexpected date that turned sour.
I thought I was free... But damn it!
As I inwardly seethed, I faced my PC armed with the GPU Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 that's considered to be the man's dream, thanks to my crazy girlfriend's fortune, as I continued to relentlessly control the character in the game I was playing.
This game, Talent War Chronicles, was set in the medieval period. However, it's a multiracial world with a power system that is fantastical in nature, as every character known as Talent Bearers uses the power of the Soul Core.
That being said, as I raided a dungeon while playing the character inspired by a real-life figure known as the Leper King or King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, a sudden approaching noise caused my room's floor to vibrate.
"What the hell...?"
Being interrupted by the passing vehicles as I chose to remain in this cramped place despite Park Yerim's offer to buy me my own condominium, I removed the headset on my ears to see what was happening.
It was then that before I could even stand...
VROOM!
SCREECH!
An enormous Truck-kun Isekai Express, struck my apartment, hitting me in the process.
BANG!
Thud!
Argh! P-painful!
My body was becoming numb; the cold began to pervade.
I realized that I was dying, so close to death as I couldn't even groan in pain.
Then, before I completely lost my dissipating consciousness, seemingly approaching the inevitable, I heard the ruined truck's door open, revealing a woman in black suit and pants in her late twenties.
Although she was wounded, this woman didn't care as I sensed her approaching footsteps.
Barely seeing her identity, I heard her speak after she crouched down in front of my dying self.
"I will now deliver Young Miss Yerim's message.
"...."
"Kang Jiho, if I can't have you, then no one can."
Having a deep connection with someone of her status in this society, even my home was not safe.
I died.
It's my first time exploring the Historical Fantasy genre!
