Chapter 16: 16

Still our efforts weren't grand by any stretch since our available resources only allowed the most basic of grow lights to be created, during the summer months it might even be better just to rebound the sunlight from outside into the structures for now and grow what little we can during the winter months.

With the new base upgrades well underway I sat back in my office chair looking over the terminal showing me the overview of my base, since our current progress was good it was time for further experimentation.

Since I could build Concrete walls through the system perhaps I can place them in other orientations beyond just stacking them up like they were play blocks if I can also extend the walls out mid air off an existing piece perhaps I can assist my engineers in creating additional buildings and since it would be system concrete walls the strength would be guaranteed.

This would be a short term solution of course since once we grew enough the total number of our manpower and engineers would mean we could have a massive construction operation supporting our growth in the future, and helping free me up to use my cheat build method to aid the hope-fully soon to be created sub-bases.

However they still needed to be very careful with their actions, the base was barely self sufficient however compared to the strength of the humans or even the beasts was still an unknown and since that was a fact our position was unstable so if the base was ever to be known and come under assault, we needed to know, lest we escape before the attack actually comes so that we could reposition to another area where we could continue to grow.

Thanks to the increase of the system long distance journey were less of a worry now, and probably another level up later and we'd gain access to helicopters or planes that would help us travel even further and faster, though the MCV could only move by land or sea. Well at least in the game but perhaps with enough of them it could travel by Helicopter.

So with these plans being laid I rolled my daily gacha and returned to my tasks within the command center.

The work of a commander is never done after all, the engineers seemed to have access to the knowledge inside of my own head, and not just game knowledge either cause now that we had the tech center they were producing new inventions almost every hour, and thanks to those the bases functionality was increasing as well.

Thanks to these we could also upgrade the Arms Factory to produce not only arms and ammunitions but also had a side production line creating cans and operating like a cannery to store up some of the harvested beast meats without needing to turn them into provisioned jerkies.

And if the farms work out the created canneries can begin to preserve veggies, soups and stews. Increasing our trade with the humans but that would also make us a bit of a bigger target since we would be seen as having more foods than we need and compared to the outposts who only seemed to eat meat and rarely veggies we would have enough to actually export, the Fortress cities, and presumably the Capital Cities as well if they exist.

Given that these cities as of yet don't provide sustenance to the outposts but instead keep creating outposts whose purpose is to send goods back to the cities, one could say that their situation is not good enough right now.

And each of those cities would look to acquire such an asset as Jake and his base, at the very least for his farming abilities to better sustain their own populations, and if not for the food probably for his weapons and vehicles since again from what he'd seen and heard of the outposts while handguns were more common, while machineguns or greater were uncommon or not even present at all.

And even their skills at building… well the outposts were capable of being called homesteads or similar.

But by this time in history Humans should easily be able to create concrete and yet the outposts were wood only constructions save for a little bit of masonry, surely this cannot be what humanity has advanced to under threat of the mutant beasts and due to the zombie apocalypse causing all unwalled cities to fall.

So with the mine operating at peak efficiency and the credits pouring in, Jake had the war factory likewise churning out tanks of every type while also reinforcing his own bases defenses.

Surely news of the trades he'd been making would one day lead back to the base, and when that time comes he wanted to be ready for whatever came for them.

Jake had already seen how humans of his own world had acted towards one another, and so he knew the lengths that humanity would go in the pursuit of it's own selfish desires and if that was the case he would go just as far if not further in his own selfish desires to have a world that humanity deserves to live on this planet.

Humans have always been a species that desired… well more. Nothing was ever good enough, the old stories told by the North American natives about how humanity came to be was something that struck a cord even for a non-native born person like Jake.

Having been born with nothing among all the other animals, Humans were given gifts by the beasts who felt sorry for man who was so wronged by god, but with each gift given, intelligence, strength, sight… … … By the end, the animals reformed the circle after the human had gone off after receiving so many gifts, assured in their belief that humankind would be happy and grateful with all that they had only for the Owl of wisdom to sadly shake it's head, announcing that the black hole that was left when humans were created imperfect by God was a hole that could never be filled, and that in their kindness the beasts had actually given had instead caused Humanity to actually get worse.

When questioned the owl responded stating that Humans got many things from the beasts however since the hole in their heart was not filled they had a desire to keep aquiring things until the void could be filled, except that this was a void created by God themselves and as such it could never be filled, a thirst that could never be quenched, a hunger that could never be sated.

And just like the story humans never did fill that void, they always pushed the boundaries further, on his earth they had progressed so far as to have destroyed half the world even before they'd gone so far as to commit to the total extermination of their race and likely the planet itself.

All in the quest for one thing… More, not more of a specific thing, just more in general.

They could have stopped, simply said what they had was enough and just come together for the reason of enhancing what they already had or ensuring that even amongst humans all of them could share in what they had already acquired but the drive, that hunger was ever present and so they did what humans always do, they tried to take what wasn't theirs.

In this new world, Jake was still a product of the old world but with the assistance of the system perhaps he could manage to cure humanity of it's predilection's, and unify his species towards something greater but until then he'd need to fend off humanity inhuman insanity first.
